This book follows the life of the Alcott family, that which inspired 'Little Women' based upon extensive family journals and letters. The book is really good for putting flesh onto the bones of the family, and really shows the inspiration Louisa May was exposed to when writing her novels. There are also some lovely poems and phrases written by both the children to their parents and vice versa, really showing the love that existed within this household. Some of the poems are really beautiful and the early poetry of Louisa really shows the talent that was to come. The only thing I felt was disappointing about this book was that it really lacked order, making it difficult to chronologically follow what influences the children were experiencing at each stage in their development. The book is broken down by 'father', 'mother' etc but I think it would have really improved by, as far as possible, having a little more order in terms of time. As 'Little Women' is one of my favourite novels, it was really nice to get this insight into the lives of the family, and I really enjoyed learning a bit more about them and placing their experiences within the novel.
