I borrowed this book ostensibly to see if my daughter and I could use some bookbinding techniques for the seriously large and one-year-overdue Book of Memories we were making for my parents (and her grandparents, obviously) for their 60th Wedding Anniversary. However, having already looked through a number of bookbinding books, I knew pretty well that none of them were going to work for us. Now, if this book had been run-of-the-mill I would have returned it immediately. However, having already looked through a number of bookbinding books, I knew pretty well that none of them were going to work for us. Now, if this book had been run-of-the-mill I would have returned it immediately. Instead, I just got the reminder from the library that it's due back in a couple of days (great email service - thanks, Auckland Public Libraries) and am even considering seeing if I can renew it. Not that I'm about to start any of the projects, but it's just great to look through. So what is it about this book that caused me to find it superior to the several others on the same subject that I got out of the library? 1) It's an excellent size (21 x 17cm 2) It's very nicely bound itself - in a servicable ringbind with an attractive hardcover surround 3) Very clear step-by-step instructions 4) Lovely illustrations 5) While there's no doubt that no skill is learned simply by reading a book, this book makes me feel it's possible for me to begin following these instructions with a reasonable chance of success (as long as I'm not too ambitious at first). Very nice, thanks! And why did nothing in this work for me and my daughter? Well, that's a whole story of its own . . .

Always interesting to check out new ideas and different techniques, compare, contrast and make!

A good collection of bookbinding techniques that are well explained and illustrated. Probably aimed more at the 'crafter' than the 'book artist' but not necessarily let down by that fact. This book would be a definite plus for anyone who is just starting bookbinding, or is looking for some interesting projects involving paper and card. Some good photos and information, but not the best instructions, if you're looking for a true manual on bookmaking. This book does cover a wide range of styles of hand made books - from simple accordions to more sculptural styles.
