Fantastic author. If you like magic, good v. evil, and a story full of strong, unique women and men (and other races), you will find this series irresistible. It's about hope in the face of overwhelming odds, being true to yourself, and respect for others. The Wizard Zolander (Zed) is unforgettable as a fun-loving old man with lots of character, and a deep understanding and use of powerful spells. The Wizard's First Rule is "People will believe anything", so they also live with their wits about them. Rarely does science fiction bring all these elements together. I especially appreciate the strength of the women's characters - physically and emotionally - since it's hard to find good science fiction/fantasy with a strong female character. Can't stand it where women, all too often, are used to create a distraction for the men and to add human interest in the story. Since a lot of sci-fi and fantasy was written before the womens' movement, almost all of the characters are men. I'm much more interested in the characters and their "powers" in fantasy than in just describing a different planet and its people/creatures. There is war in these books, but it really doesn't distract from the relationships and teamwork involved. If you've never read Terry Goodkind, you're in for a treat.

Overall, I feel this serious is well written with good character development. The series is huge, and most books are 500+ pages long, but I enjoy long books if the have a well structured and thought out plot and if the story is going somewhere. Terry Goodkind does a nice job of keeping the pace of the series going without getting bogged down with too many independent story lines and too many characters. Firstly, Terry Goodkind has the wildest imagination after J.K. Rowling. There was even that similarity with the dragon eggs. You can definitely see easily that Terry, a man, wrote this novel with abs no help from any woman. Very deliciously gory, unabashed, weird but oddly engaging book.

This series was simply awesome!!!! I loved living in this fantasy world, so very exciting and unpredictable, not sure if I ever find another series to match my enthusiasm for reading each novel...I never wanted it to end.
