I am not a fan of street-lit, worse yet I am not a big fan of rappers trying to act, much less writing. When I heard that C-Murder wrote a book- fiction no less, I rolled my eyes, hard. Then I happened to read an excerpt from the book in one issue of Vibe magazine and gasp! - It actually sounded good. Well written, grammatically correct, interesting. I was shocked and but still put off actually purchasing the book for a while. I mean any excerpt could sound good and be grammatically correct. I was shocked and but still put off actually purchasing the book for a while. I mean any excerpt could sound good and be grammatically correct. Plus I didn’t’ think I could handle the looks on my friends faces when I would tell them what I was reading. However, that excerpt was good, it has a solid 5 star amazon.com rating, and so eventually I broke down and bought the book and all I can say is WOW. At times I wondered if there was a ghostwriter (nope- at the end he tells the story of how, when, why he wrote the book) besides I’m not sure anyone at Vibe could write this well. I’ll admit, I went into this book very skeptical, looking for mistakes and anything I could find and I didn’t find anything. This book has it all character development (great character development) a good, solid plot, a good style, a viable theme, great , realistic dialogue, all that other stuff from HS English. However, most importantly it has a ( realistic) story and a purpose. It's not just glorifying like some of the other street trash lit that is polluting the shelves. Death around the Corner introduces us to Daquan. Born and bred in the Calliope (CP3), Daquan gets an early and real introduction to the streets. He continues on this path as one of the youngest and most respected hustlers in NOLA, until he finds his passion, in music. DATC follows Daquan as he tries to make this transition from the streets to the studio. It’s a coming of age story for a totally different set. We had Flyy Girl & Coldest Winter Ever, I believe DATC will slip on the shelves right between those two as the quintessential ‘hood coming of age story. It’s a book cross between Boyz in da hood an ATL (that’s the best I could do- its closer to Boyz in da hood, but updated and for a different part of the world- A southern Boyz in da hood!) It was a pleasant surprised by this I truly enjoyed this book. C-Murder is very talented writer I am actually looking forward to future works by him. http://www.deatharoundthecorner.com Please note that this is an urban book. The language and the descriptions are very real and gritty. This book is not for the faint of heart. That being said- this book is not vulgar either- Just real. Real talk, real language (profanity, use of the n-word and the h-word, street slang), real vivid streets scenes ( drugs, sex ext.) if you listen to rap music or are from the streets, hood, inner-city or whatever you call it- you will not have any problems, otherwise be warned. This book would probably rated R.

Books about the hood appear in a steady flow today and the flow just seems to continue to increase. However, quantity does not make up for quality. DEATH AROUND THE CORNER beats the odds. C-Murder's gripping account of one young man's experiences adds immeasurably to one's understanding of the challenges faced by many of our black youth. Its setting is rich in local color and local characters. DEATH AROUND THE CORNER proves to be exciting, with a jaw-dropping climax. Multi-platinum rapper C-Murder takes a gamble and wins, so does the reader. Maybe he can do for New Orleans literary what his brother Master P has done for New Orleans ' rap scene. Highly recommend. I had really low expectations when I first picked up this book, but was thankfully blown away by how invested I got into the main character. This book is the tragic story that so many people live in today, it is about a young minority that is robbed of his mother and father at young age. It is a story of how the streets can lift you up one minute and swallow you the next. It is a story of friends and how they can be smiling in your face in one minute but stab you in the back the next. It is a story of how the streets can lift you up one minute and swallow you the next. It is a story of friends and how they can be smiling in your face in one minute but stab you in the back the next. It is a story of untapped potential, potential lost by street violence and so called justice. While this book is based out of the CP3 in New Orleans, this is a story we see or hear about happening too often in our cities. Young minority men growing up without a strong male figure in their lives; where the women in their family do their best to raise them right. A neighborhood where the stars of the streets are those making the money through drug dealing. The degradation of young women to be nothing more than sexual objects. More than anything this book should open the eyes of us minority men to see the hurt and pain that there is in our own community and try to do things to help those in the worst situation be given a chance to succeed. I appreciate C-Murder writing this book on the reality of life in the hood and hope that this story of hurt, pain and loss inspires us to do better for our future generations.

I was easily the biggest No Limit slappy in my little circle of rap fans. Whenever Master P and the soldiers dropped a new album, which at one time seemed like once a month, I was at the record store picking it up. Being one of my favorite artists on “the Tank”, I was naturally pumped when I heard that C-Murder had written a book with the same name as 2Pac’s classic cut from the "Me Against the World" album. Despite a high level of anticipation, I approached this book expecting to be disappointed. Celebrities try to crossover into new fields all the time, but the results are often disastrous at best. Boy was I ever wrong. Death Around the Corner pulled me in from the first page and never let go. I found the story of Dequan, Nut, and the gang to be compelling to epic proportions, and to my surprise, very well written. Unlike another reviewer, I found this book to be packed with originality, alongside the grit and griminess that is typical of a good street fiction tale. With the music theme incorporated into the story, I couldn’t help but wonder how much of this was based on C’s life in the notorious Calliope Projects. All in all, I was very impressed with Death Around the Corner. In fact, it may very well be the best book I ever read in any category. Finished it in two days. I think that says a lot for a guy who typically takes a few weeks to a few months to finish a book. If you’re a fan of books in the genre of urban fiction, street lit, hood books or whatever you wanna call ‘em, this one is a must-read! Like books along the lines of Death Around the Corner? Absolutely awesome! I had a feeling when I picked this up that it wouldn't be regular old urban fiction and I was right! I have no doubt in my mind and I just know that this isn't entirely fictional. I have no doubt that there really wass a Daquan and a Nut. I don't mean that in the sense that there are millions but that there was actually one Daquan and one Nut. Most of the others as well. It's rare to get writing like this in the urban fiction genre- as sad as it is to say that, it's true. The Absolutely awesome! Death Around The Corner touched me like only one other urban fiction book has and that was The Coldest Winter Ever.

The book was great for the first 75% but seemed to me like the author needed to end it. It felt like he used a little "deus ex macchina" to get it over with. I honestly say I liked it especially some of the NOLA references. There were some that turned my head like talking about having po boys at Cafe du Monde, but generally it was a fun read. Well-written, bad plot. Fake gangster shit, or real gangster shit. But mostly the same-old gangster stories. KId from broken home, hard enough to rise in the underground, becomes a semi-large thug. Could have been so much more interesting, but he took the easiest path to writing this.

Book is very well written. The fact that Daquan could see his dead sister from the moment his life was changed by his father's actions; foretold how his life would turnout. The many people that told him to change was another sign. Look forward to reading more from author. Book is very well written.
