I picked this up in the YA department at my library - I knew virtually nothing about Rembrandt, and I figured that this would be an easy way to learn more. After having read it, I can now say that I know more than I did, but I feel like there's so much more that I should have learned. The personal details on Rembrandt were more sparse than I would have liked - I'm not sure if that's because he lived so long ago that not much is known about him, or whether this was because the author left the info I picked this up in the YA department at my library - I knew virtually nothing about Rembrandt, and I figured that this would be an easy way to learn more. The personal details on Rembrandt were more sparse than I would have liked - I'm not sure if that's because he lived so long ago that not much is known about him, or whether this was because the author left the information out in an attempt to make the book easy to read. Either way, although I went into without the expectation that I'd be a Rembrandt scholar by the end (obviously!) I still was disappointed by the lack of personal details. I was also disappointed by how much time was spent talking about other artists of his day. I know that it's important to understand the art world at that point in time in order to understand a particular artist; however, I felt like the author did an overkill. I would have rather seen more paintings done by Rembrandt, and learned more about Rembrandt himself. However, not all is lost. The book is printed in full color, and each glossy page is beautiful. There are lots of sidebars, lots of interesting information, and in the end, I did learn a fair amount about Rembrandt, his artwork, and what made him stand out from the rest. It was good enough that I will pick up others in the series. It just wasn't as good as it could have been.
