The 1980s. Amazing, creative, noisy, kitschy-colorful. My point of reference, because then I was seeing the world through the eyes of a child. But it is also a reference point for reading contemporary culture and its codes. And New York itself: vibrant with the rhythm of hip hop and jazz. Mecca. Art, money, drugs and crime, HIV, poverty and luxury. Basquiat is for me an emanation of a crazy road to the top and a sudden fall. And stories like his were only possible then, and only there. My objection is there are too few quotes from the main characters and a lot of source texts were not used effectively. As a biography of the painter, the book contains too few pictures and they are black and white so, in my opinion, the potential has not been fully realized. Still worth reading, though.

if you are going to read an art biography read this one especially if you appreciate his effed up graffiti art, with the poor lad dying at 27....great reading about back in the day with warhol, madonna (pre-mega fame), studio 54, early hip hop culture Wish I was there.

An overview of Jean Michel Basquiat's short but prolific career, set in the midst of punk culture and pop art in the 80's. The story is fascinating in itself, but some of the writing seemed too casual and slangy even for the biography of a graffiti artist turned modern art sensation.
