A great book as an intro to Netnography. The book goes into detail of ways to think about studying the internet.

So easy to capture and understand what is netnography as I am very new to this approach of research design.

The book was well-organized, aiming to address what netnography is about and the necessary considerations one needs to weigh before engaging in netnography. Definitely a go-to text for me as an undergrad working on her thesis. Kozinets also included a list of helpful resources related to the various topics at the end of each chapter which I think is a plus.

What is it? A variation on ethnography in which the community studied is an online community. Why not just call it “online ethnography”? “Online social experiences are significantly different from face-to-face social experiences, and the experience of ethnographically studying them is meaningfully different”. Is it a replacement or an addition to other research approaches? Could be either but likely to be an addition: on most topics these days people discuss them both online and face-to-face. Is it a replacement or an addition to other research approaches? Could be either but likely to be an addition: on most topics these days people discuss them both online and face-to-face. The author contends that as people spend more time online, netnography is likely to become more and more important as a research approach. How do you do it? The approach overall is similar to running other qualitative research project. Three netnography-specific points: likely to be better to find an existing online community relevant to your topic than to define an audience via demographic or other filters; approach this community with care; ensure that the approach is ethical. Who can help me? Netnography.com is a good resource to consult for help, as is Kozinets.net.

"[...] urging fellow newsgroup members to 'BOYCOTT THIS RESEARCH'. I can tell you that this response completely caught that new netnographic researcher off guard. I know, because that eager young adjunct professor - who had just gotten a black eye and bloody nose - was me." Poor Kozinets. :( "[...] urging fellow newsgroup members to 'BOYCOTT THIS RESEARCH'.
