I love all the different animals Karma Wilson used in this story which includes a bear, gopher, hare, raven, wren, mole, and a mouse, it really enriched it that much more. Bear Stays Up for Christmas is truly a magical book that is a MUST read especially at Christmas time :) The illustrations are charming and super cute! I recommend this book to everyone who wants to share in the joys of reading to those they love at Christmas or whenever.

Never ask a bear to stay up for Christmas! That too in winter! Why? Because no matter what he'll stay up. Never ask a bear to stay up for Christmas! That too in winter! Why? Because no matter what he'll stay up.

I feel like I have seen this story before. It’s got a host of cute animals in it. Bear usually sleeps through Christmas and this year, his friends are making sure he stays up to see Christmas. It’s cute and it’s got holiday cheer and I like the rhyme it’s told in. I feel books need to be told in rhyme more. I love it. The nephew loved the mole (Okay?). He thought the animals were cute and he liked that Santa snuck up on them. He gave this book 3 stars too.

This precious little picture book tells the story of the bear whose friends want him to stay up for Santa. This is one in a series of children's picture books involving this bear, each one told in congenial rhyming verse appropriate for a preschooler or a toddler that is ready to listen to a story. Each page has roughly four lines of text in adorable rhythmic cadence, and the pictures fill the entire page with rich color. If the reaction of my two-and-a-half year old grandson is any measure, this one is a resounding success...not to mention that it's engaging enough that parents won't object to having to read it repeatedly.

This is the second book for February that I read with my grandson Aeverie. Even though this was meant for Christmas we still enjoyed it a lot. This one is written in verse and the title is pretty self explanatory. The illustrations are done beautifully as well. A great read for the little ones at Christmas time.

The illustrations in this book are very good. The bear is appealing. The story teaches patience and unselfishness. However, I do feel that while the storyline is good, it lacks originality. Some authors just have it – that ability to write stories in rhyme for young children that simply dance off the page and spill off the tongue with a tempo and fluidity that make them so easy to read aloud and so captivating for a child to listen to. Karma Wilson is one such author. The scene is set – will Bear hibernate through yet another Christmas day, or will his faithful band of animal friends manage to keep him awake? Having read quite a few now in the Bear series, I, like all children, can’t wait to see what this group of friends will get up to – Mouse, Mole, Hare, Gopher, Badger, Wren, Raven, and, of course, Bear. Jane Chapman’s illustrations of these forest animals are rich, full of emotion and wonderfully flesh out each of the characters, partnering perfectly with the text. Well, everyone pitches in to keep Bear awake as they go through the typical pre- Christmas day preparations of finding the tree, decorating it, hanging up stockings, singing carols…. Finally, as Christmas Eve comes to a close, all the animals are weary from their festive exertions and fall asleep. Bear alone remains awake now, and in the usual spirit of friendship of all the Bear books, he busies himself with making Christmas surprises for his friends. He does not, however, see the biggest surprise of all, Santa making a visit that Christmas Eve night! Karma manages to vary pace and tone with her rhyme, and yet adds enough predictability to engage pre-K children with ease. The illustrations are truly priceless, filling each two-page spread with warm brown tones of the lair’s interior or purples and blues of a snowy midwinter’s night, and bringing each animal to lofe.

Our girls really like this one. Once again, Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman have come through with a fun story about Bear and his friends. With a rhyming narrative, this story with a Christmas theme is fun to read aloud. And the pictures are charming - we love Bear's expressions. We really enjoy reading this book together and we've read it many times. This book was fun to read. All the animals convinced the bear to stay up for Christmas this year and it shows all the activities they did. You could ask the children why do they think bear slept through Christmas every year and introduce them to the word "hibernation." This book shows that the value of friendship and also shows you that when you treat others well, you will be trated well too. Bear is hibernating for the winter but his friends wake him for Christmas. Will Bear be able to stay up? With the help of his friends---maybe. Cute illustrations. I love how the friends come together to do something special for a friend.

This book is adorable!! First off you have a bear who can’t stay awake for Christmas and it’s so cute/funny because he only misses Christmas every year because bears hibernate😂. But then he makes it and he gets to celebrate with all his friends. Their present is so sweet at the end too! I definitely want to buy this for a younger cousin, but I have to wait a few more years for him to really appreciate the bear and his sleeping habits, lol.

Hello, friends! Well, it’s the penultimate book in the holiday countdown, and we’ve picked a great one for Christmas Eve: Bear Stays Up For Christmas, written by Karma Wilson and illustrated by Jane Chapman. This sweet story follows Wilson and Chapman’s popular Bear and his friends as they prepare for Christmas Day. Bear’s friends have made decision: this year, they are going to wake their friend Bear from hibernation so that he can enjoy the Christmas holiday with them. And while it’s tough to wake a hibernating bear (and even tougher to keep him awake!), the friends are insitent – Christmas is a time to be together, and they don’t want for Bear to be left out. As the day goes by, the friends prepare for Christmas in all the usual ways: getting and decorating a tree, making yummy goodies, singing carols. As the day wanes, the friends all begin to stretch and yawn themselves – they’re so sleepy from all their work! One by one, they nod off until… only Bear is left awake. Grinning, Bear is delighted – now he can work on presents for all his friends, and perhaps have a very special visitor… I have yet to read one of the Bear books that isn’t an absolute delight, and this one keeps the tradition alive. Sweet, kind, whimsical and wondrous, Bear and his friends are as cheerful and dedicated as always, and their adventures here are a festive treat that explores the Christmas theme of togetherness and friendship. Chapman’s illustrations are wonderful, using lifelike critter models and imbuing them with loads of personality and movement. The length is perfect, and JJ and I always love reading about Bear and company together. A wonderful Christmas story for a beloved cast of characters, and it’s Baby Bookworm approved! Be sure to check out The Baby Bookworm for more reviews!

My fourth grade teacher purchased my entire class copies of this and it was the first book I ever owned that was not hand-me-down!! I read it over and over again and loved it so much. I had forgotten about it until I saw the cover the other day while at work-- gotta love the nostalgic rediscovery of a book you loved!

It's cute on the last page bear is snuggled under his blanket.
