Michael Anthony is one of our great local writers he is also a historian, apart from his history titles such as this volume and the likes of 'First in Trinidad' and 'The Making of Port of Spain', he also has several fictional works including 'Cricket in the Road' and 'The games were coming'. World war II affected every corner to the globe. It was the costliest and most widespread war the world has ever witnessed. It is important to realize that during this war, Trinidad was a British colony and loyal to the British Crown, so England's war was also Trinidad's war :a war that the nation endured for 6 years. It was a period marked by excitement, worriment and great infrastructural development. Family-life was disrupted and citizens were displaced. The war changed many Trinidadians' sense of direction or their awareness of orientation in terms of their location, as many changes to infrastructure were made during this period, such as the erection of buildings and the construction of roads. Patriotism and suffering existed side by side. In this book Anthony gives a chronological account of incidents during war-time, that is both powerful and engaging. Being one of the few non-fiction works based on the impact of the Second World War on Trinidadian culture, I was relieved that the author did not romanticize the war as many authors have done in the past; there are no overly optimistic characters or 'uber-patriotic' portrayals, the prose is stark and gritty and captures the harsh realities of war-time. Any reader interested in learning more about this pivotal period which shaped present day T & T should read this book.

Quite informative and historically interesting, but a bit repetitive and lacking tight editing. Worth reading though, for the I-never-knew-that bits of information.
