I really enjoyed this book. I was a bit wary going in -- these "landmark" books (The First Female Detective Novel!) are rarely as riveting as the subsequent genre definers they end up inspiring. But I was pleasantly surprised. The mysteries are well thought out. Violet uses a combination of keen observation and an understanding of human nature, and she's quite a fun and gutsy heroine. Every story (and the book overall) feels complete as well, which makes this a very satisfying read. -- A collect I really enjoyed this book. maybe it was the reader, but this was a snoozer for me. I never did get interested.
Chris –
Another early woman writer of mysteries. Her detective is a young New York socialite who uses her wits and connections to solve mysteries.
Jeremy –
Quite entertaining. The darkly romantic mysteries are almost worthy of Poe, and the young and privileged female detective is an interesting character in her own right, with a mysterious motive for pursuing her unconventional sideline in detective work.

Collection of mystery stories from a long time ago.

A very nice collection of short mystery stories made all the more enjoyable by "the first female detective" (she inspired Agatha Christie!). Violet Strange is charming and the mysteries really are mysteries - I only guessed the ending to the story with the blind doctor. I found the stories delightful. This young Violet Strange uses her wit and knowledge of people to discover the answer to their problems. She and her brother Andrew sometime work together, however, he is only there as a chaperone. Violet seems to have the Sherlock Holmes sense of observation. I enjoyed each short story as a before bedtime read.
