Nearly four decades passed between the release of Danny and the Dinosaur in 1958 and its first sequel, Happy Birthday, Danny and the Dinosaur!, so one can imagine the new story was nostalgic for kids of the 1950s who grew up loving the original. Much of Happy Birthday, Danny and the Dinosaur!'s charm derives from this nostalgia, the emotional resonance of watching Danny once again ride on his dinosaur's back after thirty-seven years (in our time, that is; for Danny, almost no time has elapsed). Whether you learned to read generations ago or you're a kid just learning to read on your own, there's fun to be had in Happy Birthday, Danny and the Dinosaur! Syd Hoff always provides a worthwhile reading experience. There's no need for introductions between Danny and his old dinosaur pal; they've known each other a long time. So when Danny comes to the museum to inquire if the dinosaur can attend his sixth birthday party, the sauropod readily accepts the invitation, picking up Danny's human friends on the way. The party is mostly typical kid games, with the dino having to adjust because of his unusual physical dimensions. Since it's the dinosaur's birthday, too (he's turning one hundred million years and one days old), they share a big pink-frosted cake and make their birthday wishes together. It's an extraordinary birthday overall. What six-year-old wouldn't leap at the chance to have a live dinosaur participate in his birthday bash? The wistful goodbye at the end of Danny and the Dinosaur isn't repeated, but there's a nice moment when Danny decides what he wants his birthday wish to be. "I wish we can all be together again next year," Danny says, and his dinosaur seconds the sentiment. When you're half of a friendship that has delighted dino-loving youngsters for decades, what could be better than enjoying your adventures for another sweet year? Generations after Danny and the Dinosaur's debut, kids still adored Danny and his Jurassic friend. Not every book series endures so well. Happy Birthday, Danny and the Dinosaur! isn't as touching as the original, but it's a serviceable story with Syd Hoff's trademark warmth and juvenile wit, sure to be a hit with kids who go gaga for Danny and the Dinosaur. I'd give this second book one and a half stars, but I'll round up to two. I get a lot out of my Syd Hoff easy readers. No matter how many times I read them, I look forward to the next time.

A fun level 1 reader that's for any kid who loves dinosaur's and birthday parties. Easy enough for a new reader to read by himself or out loud and something that they'll want to read as well. Not for the K or preschool group, although the pictures are nice an colorful and sometimes they like looking at the pages. They just can't seem to sit still for the whole book. A nice addition to our library, especially for .50 cents at a library sale. (publisher's price on the book says $14.95!) Danny and the Dinosaur was one of my childhood favorites so it was a fun experience to listen to my son read this to me...fun is probably poor word choice, it was more like amazing! Love listening to my little first grader become a stronger reader each and every day :)

Happy birthday, Danny and the Dinosaur! is a book I would possibly read to a young class if a student had a birthday/birthday party during the school day. The plot of the story includes a young boy celebrating a birthday who invites a dinosaur also celebrating a birthday. They go to the boys house and have a birthday party. They enjoy their special day together and at the end of the day decide they both had the "best birthday ever". They enjoy their special day together and at the end of the day decide they both had the "best birthday ever". As mentioned before, the book would be best suited for a young class. I think it would get their imaginations going with the idea of having a birthday with a dinosaur, which could prompt a conversation about what person/animal would they most like to share a birthday party with. I also believe that the illustrations included in the book are helpful. The characters show different sociological ideas. For example, I could talk with them on things like how he was kind and invited someone else to his birthday. I could also touch on sharing due to him sharing the birthday party with the dinosaur. In this book, there are different ways I could have the students get more involved with the story. I could ask different things such as "has anyone ever played pin the tail on the donkey?" or "lets all count the candles on the cake and see how old Danny is turning". I think this will keep them intrigued with the story. All in all, I think this is a good book for younger children. It is light and simple, which on birthday's sometimes it can be a little chaotic that this book will be able to keep interest yet not be too demanding or heavy on a student.

The story begins with Danny will be celebrating his birthday. He is so excited about this day because he had a friend that shares the same birthday. He goes to visit his friend and he is not your normal friend he is a dinosaur. He tells him I am 6 years old today and he invites the dinosaur to his party. The dinosaur is so excited about the party on the way back to Danny's house Danny and the dinosaur pick up some of his friends. Danny and his friends were so excited because they all rode the dinosaur to Danny's house. The dinosaur also shared a birthday with Danny and he was a hundred million years old. The kids, Danny and the dinosaur all got party hats and were ready to sing happy birthday, play games, and eat ice cream, and cake. At the end of the story the dinosaur and Danny both agreed that was the best birthday they had ever had it was such a nice and happy ending. I would definitely read this book to my students and my kids at home because it is such a nice picture book with a lot of happy kids faces.

Well at least the dinosaur-with-no-name doesn't wreak as much havoc as Kellogg's Pinkerton, the giant Great Dane puppy. I can see why many children would like this leveled reader, but most fans of dinosaurs are probably too knowledgeable for it. I read this book before reading the original one. The dinosaur comes to Danny's birthday party and facilitates and complicates the affair. Both this and the original mention "a hundred million years" regarding the age of the dinosaur, but I just skipped this as I read. I read this book before reading the original one. This is a short and simple beginning reader book that will entertain young children, especially those who love dinosaurs. The illustrations are very cartoon-like and the narrative is similar to other books by Syd Hoff. Our youngest read this book aloud to us and we enjoyed reading it together. Danny is turning six years old today, he goes to the museum and invites his friend the dinosaur to come to his party. Wonder what it would be like to have a dinosaur in your house? There are a few comical moments like when the dinosaur has to hang his feet out of the window. This book is very easy to read, I would definitely use it for beginning readers.

If you enjoyed Danny and the Dinosaur then you'll love this continuation of Danny and his friend! They both celebrate their birthday's together. And you don't have to read Danny and the Dinosaur to be able to understand the storyline here. The words are simple and often times repetitive so is kind of easy for beginning readers. Who doesn't love Danny and the Dinosaur books? I enjoyed reading this book because it was quick. I also liked it because birthday parties are fun. Adding a dinosaur in books really capture kids attention. I think individual kids would like this book, not read during a class. Who doesn't love Danny and the Dinosaur books?
