It is hard to review this book without mentioning "Horrible Histories." The style is very similar but this does to into more detail about what we know and don't know about Shakespeare. It is easy to read and informative. It gives extra details about a few of his plays and the time he lived in too. I would recommend this as an accompaniment to Shakespeare's work to those just starting to learn about him. It is hard to review this book without mentioning "Horrible Histories." শেক্সপিয়রের মতো এমন গুরুগম্ভীর বিষয়, অনার্স পড়ার তিনটি বছর ধরে তাঁকে নিয়ে এত জটিল সব প্রবন্ধ পড়েছি, কিন্তু এত সহজ ভাষায় তাঁকে এভাবে পাবো ভাবিনি। পড়তে পড়তে মনে হচ্ছিল যেন উইলিয়ম শেক্সপিয়র আমার পাশের বাড়ির দাদু, তিনি মারা যেতে ওঁর গল্প শুনছি। গোটা বইটা সহজ ইংরেজিতে লেখা আর সঙ্গে নানা রকমের প্যারোডি করা ইলাস্ট্রেশন। কী বকছি কিছু বুঝছেন না। তাই তো? আসুন, অধ্যায় অনুযায়ী বিশ্লেষণ করি কী কী আছে বইটায়। Introduction: যাঁরা জানেননা শেক্সপিয়র কে(যদিও এমন লোক খুব কমই আছে বলে আমার বিশ্বাস), তাঁ শেক্সপিয়রের মতো এমন গুরুগম্ভীর বিষয়, অনার্স পড়ার তিনটি বছর ধরে তাঁকে নিয়ে এত জটিল সব প্রবন্ধ পড়েছি, কিন্তু এত সহজ ভাষায় তাঁকে এভাবে পাবো ভাবিনি। পড়তে পড়তে মনে হচ্ছিল যেন উইলিয়ম শেক্সপিয়র আমার পাশের বাড়ির দাদু, তিনি মারা যেতে ওঁর গল্প শুনছি। গোটা বইটা সহজ ইংরেজিতে লেখা আর সঙ্গে নানা রকমের প্যারোডি করা ইলাস্ট্রেশন। কী বকছি কিছু বুঝছেন না। তাই তো? আসুন, অধ্যায় অনুযায়ী বিশ্লেষণ করি কী কী আছে বইটায়। Introduction: যাঁরা জানেননা শেক্সপিয়র কে(যদিও এমন লোক খুব কমই আছে বলে আমার বিশ্বাস), তাঁদের জন্য অল্প কথায় তাঁর ব্যাপারে বলা আছে। Enter Shakespeare stage left...: শেক্সপিয়রের জন্মের আগে লন্ডনের অবস্থা, তাঁর বাবা জন শেক্সপিয়রের নানা কাহিনী বলা আছে এই অধ্যায়ে। Shakespeare in school: শেক্সপিয়র যে উচ্চশিক্ষিত ছিলেন না, তা কমবেশি সবাই জানেন। কিন্তু ইংরেজির সহজপাঠ তো তিনি নিয়েছিলেন নিশ্চয়ই! সে বিষয়েই এই অধ্যায়। Shakespeare in love: শেক্সপিয়রের প্রেমকাহিনী, বিবাহ এবং সন্তানসন্ততি নিয়ে এই অধ্যায়। The lost year: ১৫৮৫তে শেক্সপিয়রের দাম্পত্যজীবন থেকে ১৫৯২ সালে তাঁর লেখনীর জগতে পদার্পণের মধ্যে যে ফাঁক, সেই সময়ে কী করতেন তিনি? তাই নিয়েও অনেক তত্ত্ব আছে। সেসবই সহজ ভাষায় বোঝানো আছে এখানে। Shakespeare's London: কেমন ছিল শেক্সপিয়রের আমলের লন্ডন? কতটা তফাৎ ছিল তাঁর জন্মের আগের লন্ডনের সঙ্গে? এখনকার লন্ডনের সঙ্গেই বা কতটা তফাৎ?সেসবের বিস্তৃত বর্ণনা রয়েছে এখানে। Will gets writing: কেন শুরু করলেন তিনি লেখা? প্রথম দিকে কীভাবে লেখালিখি চলতো? কী ছিল বিষয়? কারাই বা ছিলেন প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী? তাই এখানে আলোচ্য। Shakespeare at work: লেখক হিসেবে শেক্সপিয়রকে ঠিক কীভাবে তুলে ধরা যায়, তা বলা হয়েছে এই অধ্যায়ে। Shakespeare the success: বছরে কটা লেখা লিখতেন তিনি? কারা, কোথায়, কীভাবে অভিনয় করত? তাই নিয়ে এই আস্ত অধ্যায়। Shakespeare's Globe: যখন শেক্সপিয়রের খ্যাতি গগনচুম্বী, তখন তিনি নিজের একটি নাট্যমঞ্চ বানান: গ্লোব। সেই নিয়ে গল্প বলা হয়েছে এখানে। Shakespeare and the Crown: শেক্সপিয়রের আমলের রাজনীতি নিয়ে এই অধ্যায়। The King's man: রাজরাণীদের সঙ্গে কেমন সম্পর্ক ছিল শেক্সপিয়রের? তাই নিয়েই নানা গল্প আছে এই অধ্যায়ে। Shakespeare's suspects: প্রফেসর শঙ্কু পড়ে জেনেছিলাম, একটা রটনা আছে যে শেক্সপিয়র নাকি নাটকগুলির রচয়িতা নন। তাহলে কারা হতে পারেন? সেই দাবীর ভিত্তি কী? সেসব নিয়েই এই অধ্যায়। Master playwright: শেক্সপিয়রের লেখার মধ্যেও ছিলো কিছু সীমাবদ্ধতা। তাই নিয়ে এই অধ্যায়। বলাই বাহুল্য সেই সীমাবদ্ধতা পরিমাণে খুবই অল্প। তাই অধ্যায়ের কলেবরও ছোট। The final curtain: অবশেষে মারা গেলেন শেক্সপিয়র। কী হলো তারপর? তাঁর লেখা কিভাবে সংরক্ষিত হলো? এসব নিয়েই নানা কথা রয়েছে এই অধ্যায়ে। Shakespeare through the centuries: মানুষটা মারা যাওয়ার পর দশক কাটেনি, কেটেছে শতকের পর শতক। কোন শতকে কীভাবে নিয়েছে জনগণ শেক্সপিয়রকে? সেসব নিয়ে এই শেষ অধ্যায়। বইটার মধ্যে আরও একটা বাড়তি পাওনা ছিলো। তা হলো শেক্সপিয়রের বিখ্যাত নাটকগুলির মজার অলংকরণসহ গল্প সহজ ভাষায় বলা। অত্যন্ত সুখপাঠ্য বই। শেক্সপিয়র সম্পর্কে বিন্দুমাত্র আইডিয়া না থাকলেও বইটা উল্টেপাল্টে দেখা যায়।

Funny way to learned about William Shakespeare's work and life, but this book is for teens and I read this when I worked as a teacher at a middle-grade school and discovered this book at the school's library. I learned many things about Shakespeare' private life, the theater at England during Sheakespeare' life and his contribution for England's and the world's culture. Well, I'm on a bit of a Shakespeare roll right now. We've been studying Much Ado About Nothing in lit class and I just went to a university lecture on Romeo and Juliet so I'm interested in anything that will give me some insight and any useful resources that I can pass to my students. If you haven't read a Dead Famous book, you should. They are a lot of fun. This was my first in the series and I think I will probably pick up a few more. If the others are like this, I can say they are filled with Well, I'm on a bit of a Shakespeare roll right now. If the others are like this, I can say they are filled with interesting facts and funny cartoons. It takes history and makes it an enjoyable read. It is a quick 176 pages and you will enjoy most of it if you are interested in Will and the time in which he lived. I highly recommend it for anybody who is studying the plays. BTW, I felt this book had the potential to get 4 or even 5 stars, but it got away from what it was doing well and created filler to make up quite a few pages. For example, I don't think the book needs a lot of the play summaries (especially the history plays) and it shouldn't have wasted so many pages on the authorship question. That said, the good stuff is great and well worth reading. With a little more effort, Donkin could have made this fabulous! Anyway, you are still going to enjoy it- especially if you are one of my lit students. I'm going to give this book 3.5/5 stars.

One of the simplest biographies of one of the most famous personalities of the world. There has always been an unsaid gap between Shakespeare and I. His plays were famous but I hardly knew anything about either the playwright or his works. All I knew was that he is said to be the greatest of all times. His plays were famous but I hardly knew anything about either the playwright or his works. All I knew was that he is said to be the greatest of all times. This book, finally, bridged the gap between us and introduced me to Shakespeare in the easiest possible way. Light humour, liberal use of anecdotes, detailed description and interesting sketches only add to the joy of reading it. Thanks Meris, for if it wasn't for you, I might have never considered reading it. And to theweek.in/thebard for bringing me this close to the master playwright.

A YA book designed to teach kids about Shakespeare life, career, and works. It has a number of inaccuracies and reasonable guesses presented not as reasonable guesses, but as facts. It occasionally finds significance in these non-facts. The book is entertaining and well done in every way, except factual, but the facts matter.

My preteen daughter got it from school library and I got so much hooked to it that I got it reissued. A wonderfully written book, the best introduction the kids can have to the greatest writer of all the times. Even adults can learn a few interesting facts. Perfect read for a rainy day.
