Bland, innocuous, paranormal romance (PNR). So tasteless it makes filtered water seem spicy by comparison. I didn't hate it. Definitely didn't love it. Was remarkable unmoved by it. Every so often I get it in my head that I'm a romance reader. In earnest, I adore a great love story, and tend to look for 'ships even where there are none. But few actual romances do it for me. My fave romances are usually SF/F/action stories with a romantic subplot that ends happily. Because I'm all about the HEA. Unf Bland, innocuous, paranormal romance (PNR). In earnest, I adore a great love story, and tend to look for 'ships even where there are none. But few actual romances do it for me. My fave romances are usually SF/F/action stories with a romantic subplot that ends happily. Because I'm all about the HEA. Unfortunately, most romance, with its overwhelming trope of all-lust-all-the-time to the expense of actual plot, doesn't ring my bell. As I read What a Demon Wants, I realized my tolerance for romantic tropes is even lower with paranormal romance. Why? Because if you're going to write about supernatural beings, folks with magic and superpowers, than they need to do something more than fall into insta-lust and spend >90% of the plot getting stupid over each other. What a Demon Wants features an interesting premise, in that the heroine is a fantasy writer who literally writes what she knows. Ellina is a half human/demon whose fantasy novels include demons and real, working spells. That sentence, however, is the extent that the plot device is used in the story line. Seriously. The implications of her writing topics are only superficially addressed, beyond a mention that her family doesn't approve and that she accumulates piles of paper doing research. Ellina is being stalked by someone, but despite several break-ins at her home, Ellina is unconcerned. Yep, a Too Stupid to Live Heroine. She has no demon powers except the inconvenient tendency to turn red, with horns and a tail, when sexually aroused. Oh, nos! No man will love her. Enter Jude, the bodyguard, the man who will love her, horns and all. Jude is hired by Ellina's brother to guard his TSTL sister. Jude takes one look at Ellina, gets a boner and decides he can't guard her body because...boner. This devolves into a stupid back-and-forth where Ellina demands that he guard her, even though she doesn't believe she's in danger and doesn't want him guarding her. Uh, whot? Of course he agrees, and for like 160 pages, we get drab chatter, lusty looks, and cooking and gooing over babies. It's one stupid contrivance after another. Anyway, I must have downloaded this during yet another phase where I was trying to convince myself I liked PNR. Lawd, help me, I hope it was free.

It had some 'lust at first sight' factors involved in it, however Kathy went about turning that initial reaction to actual feeling-induced lust/love. Loved that part of it. X3 HOWever, the plot kind of fell out from under me right before the end. I mean LIterally fell. It was there...and then everything was wonderful with the world and everyone was happy. I was kind of put out. I knnnnow this is primarily a smut book, but still. I was left with with the feeling like "Huh? You just.. He just.. And you all just..." wondering how everything just magically worked out and no one was going to make a big deal out of the entire situation. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who's looking to read the book-and like I said earlier I loved the characters and just about everything else-but for me the reason why this is a 3 star instead of a 4 is because I felt let down by the conclusion, and how Kathy had the characters (especially Jude) reacted to the situation; which to me did not fit how they behaved leading up to said conclusion. That being said, her characterization was lovely, and I will probably be reading some of Kathy Love's other work, looking for that same sizzly building of tension. X3

I bought this book a while back and decided to pick it up and read "old school" 😉. When I added it to my currently reading on goodreads I found that it was book 4 of a series. I love the story of Elli and Jude. It's funny and sweet with a current of attraction and suspense. I can't wait to read the others in the series. 3.5-4 stars While I liked how it ended, ultimately, I thought the ending was very abrupt and not very action packed/dramatic. And the romance came together extremely quickly.

Reclusive author and demon half-breed Ellina Kostova has been beset by bad luck. Her home has been broken into three times in the past three months, books and research have gone missing, she's received weird phone calls, was almost run over by a car, and got stuck in a cat for several months. Her home has been broken into three times in the past three months, books and research have gone missing, she's received weird phone calls, was almost run over by a car, and got stuck in a cat for several months. But really, besides that cat thing, which personally she blames on her trickster demon brothers, the rest can be written off as consequences of being a famous author and living in New Orleans. Her overprotective big brother, on the other hand, isn't quite so cavalier. Guess that answers the question of why a demon...even a half demon...needs a bodyguard. Not that Ellina agrees. Not that her brother gives her a choice. Though, really, if she had to be stuck with a bodyguard, the sexy Jude Anthony isn't so bad. He's fun to look at, though that way leads to embarrassing hot flashes, scales, and horns... Yeah, that's a downer. So's the fact that the man's all about business, none too forthcoming about himself, and seems to have a distaste for touching demons. And people wonder why she's reclusive...or against having a strange man in her house loomi...er...guarding over her. When she's attacked in a public restroom, however, disbelief in a threat all too real evaporates like so much smoke, and having Jude around doesn't seem like such a bad idea. When his seemingly icy behavior starts to melt, and his touch starts to turn from protective to possessive, though, a bigger danger looms large. Jude can protect her body...but who is going to protect her heart? As a general rule, I don't like jumping into the middle of a series. I'm depressingly linear in my reading habits, and I don't like feeling lost in a book's previously established mythos and backstory. I can say that I didn't have that problem here. The reason for that, though, may be a bigger issue. It's a perfectly entertaining read. For fans of lighter paranormal romance books, the characters are pleasant enough and their relationship cute enough to appeal. It entertained me on that level. Kathy Love has a breezy and light writing style I found pleasant. Ellina and Jude were likable. They had some nice chemistry. For a romance that was more fluff than substance, I enjoyed it. That's a good thing, truly, because when I look for substance, it's in very short supply. I'm not sure what the series is like, as I went into this book cold, but What A Demon Wants was lacking on a lot of very critical issues. The world building was virtually nonexistent. There was no exposition about the created mythology, little framework for the world of the paranormals or preternaturals in reference to humans, and no explanation of what demons are, what they do, and what they're capable of doing. Character development is similarly hampered. The fact that Ellina is half demon is briefly explained, as is her past, her career, and her family issues. None of which is really expounded on or awarded any depth (we're not even given details on that whole cat thing!). Neither is Jude's history, which is lengthy, so I certainly wouldn't expect the blow-by-blow, but it would have been nice to have a clearer idea of how he became what he is, as it's supposed to be impossible. Plot threads were introduced, then left to dangle. Ellina's brother and his pregnant wife, Ellina's twin brothers, her father, all appear, initiate conflict or opportunity for some development, but are given nothing but cursory attention. The suspense subplot was the most evolved of all the threads beyond the romance, and that ended so abruptly and in such an anticlimactic fashion that I was almost agog. And agog isn't a good look for me. I liked the romance, I really did. It was cute in an uncomplicated and simple way, with no real conflict or melodrama. A little sexy; a little fun. Everything quickly resolved and mostly feel-good. I appreciate that, because I'm a little burned out on melodrama at the moment. But I'm afraid if you focus on the characters in the romance, you'll notice they're very thinly developed, and if you look beyond the romance to the supporting plot threads you'll see too much potential that went unrealized. There just doesn't seem to be all that much story in this story. ~*~*~*~ Reviewed for One Good Book Deserves Another.

...and I would have gotten away with it if wasn't for you damn kids! Yeah, I've read all of Kathy Love's books and while they aren't life changing, they are generally pretty good. This book was heading in that direction too, I was enjoying it. I had figured out who the Big Bad was, but not the motivation. Suddenly I realized that I was 10 pages from the end and the Big Bad Story line hadn't even begin to play out... Which is probably why it felt slapped on. I had figured out who the Big Bad was, but not the motivation. Suddenly I realized that I was 10 pages from the end and the Big Bad Story line hadn't even begin to play out... Which is probably why it felt slapped on. Ellina Kostova is a half demon fiction writer that writes about... demons. Her books follow the adventures of a cake decorator that is also a demon slayer. For some reason that isn't really explained when a demon uses a spell in her books, Ellina has written the actual spell. Now she might have either a fanatical stalker or a preternatural being upset that she is giving out trade secrets. Enter Jude Anthony. He is a half vampire/half werewolf body guard that Ellina's full demon half brother has hired to protect her. Are you still with me? Jude and Ellina are instantly attracted to each other. But Ellina has a problem, crowds and sexual arousal are what causes her demon to manifest. Of course. It's a good thing that the half vampire/half werewolf is really hot. I hope he likes horns. Here are the problems with this book. He's a half vampire/half werewolf and you find out NOTHING about him. Ok, you find out that around the full moon his hair gets longer. And he exhibits some very alpha werewolf possessive tendencies. But nothing about his vamp side. Does he bite? Have fangs? I guess I don't know why not just make him a straight up werewolf? Why make him a mix if not for anything except one line where he identifies with her for being a "half-breed?" It seems like a waste of a character. Another problem? The Big Bad. He gets layered in to the story early on. You get his POV with few clues as to what or who he is. But there aren't that many characters introduced in this book so your options are limited. So you figure out who or what the Big Bad is, but you still don't know the why. Then you get to the big scene. You know who the Big Bad and finally the heroines spidey-senses starts to clue her in as well. And then... therestofthebookconcludesjustlikethis. WTF? 234 pages and then the conclusion happens in 4 sentences. But fear not there is an epilogue that attempts to fill in all the giant plot holes. Plus, there is a HUGE stretch to get an inside joke in to the book. Apparently Kathy Love and Erin McCarthy are friends and she really stretched to drop her name in the book. Here's the thing. I've read all of Kathy Love's books (except for 1 short story in an anthology). She started with 3 contemporary romances, then moved into a 4 book pnr series. Then she started writing these "stand alone" pnr books, that aren't really stand alone. As a matter of fact every book assumes you have knowledge from a previous book. And it starts with her first pnr book. You know, the lore specific to her vampires etc. But these stand alone books actually have characters from previous books and small story lines that continue from each book. One of the giant plot holes in this book was actually something that was figured out in the last book, but it had to be re-explained in the epilogue because if not it would seem like an unresolved plot point. It's all just messy. I'm going to need something better from Kathy Love's next book to continue my author loyalty.

When Ellina’s stalker ups the game and attacks her in public, Jude has had enough. He won’t be going anywhere soon…unless Ellina goes with him.His carefully laid out plans for the future just took a major detour. This book is decently short with only 238 pages. I read it in one sitting, which honestly doesn’t happen often around my house. From page one I liked Ellina, felt for her. The way her family, save Maksim, treats her made me so mad. Her attitude though was so charming, so inviting, I just had to love her. Jude is totally an alpha male. He is big and intimidating and Ellina doesn’t take any crap from him. Who doesn’t want someone like that watching their back…or their front for that matter. As far as sex scenes this one is pretty tame with not much going on until the last part of the book. That’s okay though, the internal dialogue from the characters was extremely engaging. The conversations were witty and laced with humor. And the adversary was slightly off his rocker but nothing too devious. The only bad thing I would have to say is that the adversary wasn’t as dark as I normally like them and things seemed to wrap up extremely quickly. We find out the reason Jude is what he is, but a explanation of how isn’t really forthcoming. However everything else makes up for it ten fold. I don’t read Kathy Love for the dark, twisted psychopath…I read it for the interaction and humor. Love delivered for me yet again. It was cute, and today that’s what I needed. If you’re looking for something gritty, look elsewhere. If you want something fun, paranormal and quick, then look no further.

Ellina finds herself drawn into a whirlwind of lust, love and passion she has never experienced. Lots of sensual love scenes, you can feel the electricty floating around in these scenes. A fast paced paranormal thriller filled with sensual love scenes, passion that could light a match and love that defies the odds. Beauty is skin deep,is portrayed in this book, Jude looked past Ellina's Demon side to discover the angel that he loved. Two sides to a whole. I enjoyed the hero, strong, heroic and caring and able to show his emotions even though he was a kick arse parnormal with extra ablilities that could knock your socks off. Ellina was interverted at first with he demon side but in time she was able to show who the real Ellina was and this alone made her whole , the person she has needed to be her whole life. Chapters flowed smoothly, descriptions well invisaged, I could picture scenes from the book just from the information given throughout the book. Overall my first book from Kathy a free read from Amazon, I throughly enjoyed the plot, dialogue and all aspects of this book. I do realize this is a part of a series now, but I dont feel like I missed out on much but will be looking for the previous books to touch base with this series.

The leading lady this time is authoress Ellina (Maksim's sister from Demon Can't Help It), a reclusive half demon half human crossbreed who maintains calm and control at all times because any type of excitement, including arousal, makes her literally 'horny'. You can imagine the crimp that's put in Ellina's love life, especially since she's attracted to humans and not other supes. Of course Ellina just hasn't met the right supe yet. That all changes, when after several break-ins at Ellina's home, brother Maksim decides Ellina needs protection. Against Ellina's wishes, Maksim hires paranormal body guard Jude to keep Ellina safe. Even though Jude has a 'thing' against demons, the attraction between the pair is electric. But with Jude's reservations about getting involved with a demon not to mention a client, as well as Ellina's 'scaly little problem' – then throw in Ellina’s mysterious stalker - it's not clear how things can work out between the pair. Not to worry though, HEA's always find a way, because as every bodyguard knows ... the best way to guard a body is up close - real close. I liked What A Demon Wants. Both Jude and Ellina are quite appealing as leads which goes a long way in making this a cute and sexy read. The background stalker story is not much of a mystery for us readers, but even though it was tossed off quickly at the end, I wasn't upset with the resolution of the stalker story line (I thought it was kind of funny). And while I liked the haunted Jude a great deal, his supernatural secrets aren't fully explored (What is he trying to win free of?) and adding this to the thin plot, What A Demon Wants ends up being a lightweight romance. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying the book, because I was in the mood for something light, and now and then it's nice to read a book where your brain doesn't have to work to hard:) So I thought What a Demon Wants was a nice, if frothy, addition to Love's series (Maksim's story is still my favorite thought) and I really enjoyed meeting Ellina's twin demon brothers, Pasha and Andy - one light and one dark and both mischievous. The brothers look to be promising candidates for future books, because yes, from the epilog, it's clear that Love's not done with her demons yet.

Ren, from earlier in the series, has the same last name and in fiction I don't like coincidences. I get that it's not an uncommon name but it sort of irked me. The changing of the gender of Jo's baby really frustrated me. I felt like it was just one of those convenient things so that Ellina could go "Look at me dad! Maksim named his kid after my mortal side." The villain/stalker in this novel was rather obvious as rather few characters were introduced. And the action with regards to that storyline sort of tied up way too quickly and nicely for my liking. A few pages from the end and all of a sudden everything is fixed. It was all just a little too neat for my liking. The story was sweet and full of a lot of sex but it wasn't all that romantic for me. The entire story occurs within about a week and they manage to go from meeting to love within that time. But for me there wasn't much romance. I'd like to have seen more of them together where they weren't talking about either work or having sex. Gosh... never thought I'd want less sex, more story... but there you have it. I think that Love sort of cheated me out of a good story with not really showing Jude's back story more. He's a halfVamp/HalfWere who managed to be turned into both. There is a huge story there! Tell us more about his powers, more about how it happened, more about what drove him too it. I have to admit for a very long time, what with the way he spoke about money, I thought he had to pay back the people who turned him and only then would he be able to get by doing non-paranormal work. The restaurant surprised me. :) (hide spoiler)] I did like the story but it just wasn't my favourite Kathy Love novel and I felt a little let down. But Kathy Love is fantastic at writing fluffy feel-good paranormal stories that are perfect for lazy day afternoons.

I usually enjoy a book by Kathy Love; a quick romantic supernatural read for a weekend. This one fit the quick and romantic, but somehow fell short in the enjoyment department. After finishing, I think I've been able to pinpoint the problem - not enough danger (and honestly, not a very good plot, either). In any Love book, there's the meeting between the two romantic leads, the growing attraction that both leads try to fight, and a threat to the female that causes the male to go beyond his typical comfort level, thus proving his love for the girl. There's always a supernatural element, too, usually the guy - either a vampire or some such entity. Nothing too difficult to read, but cute and fun and romantic as all get out. Well, this book has the romantic covered I suppose. Jude is the handsome stranger, half werewolf, half vampire, all male. Ellina is the damsel in distress - except that she's not, not really. The girl is half-demon, so it's not as if she's completely helpless, and I found it difficult to believe that she was really in that much danger. Their growing attraction is supposed to be complicated by Ellina's reaction to lust, one that has turned off every human she's ever tried to be with - her demon side comes out, resulting in a rather unusual skin condition. Again, I didn't buy this so much as a true problem because Jude isn't human. Sigh. My biggest complaint is the stalker/killer, mostly that the writing wasn't good enough to prevent me from figuring out his/her identity half-way through the book. Not to mention the fact that it's not as if the stalker/killer is truly a villain, something that when revealed felt like a cop-out to me. True, this isn't great literature, but I would like my authors to remember that I do have a brain (even though at times I don't want to tax it!) I'm hoping the next Love book I pick up will be better than this one. Overall, it felt like a middling C-type work. Not one of her best, I'm afraid.

I haven't read anything in this series for a long time so I have a little none at all recollection of the plot and characters. So while reading I tried and failed to remember the previous books. Ellina is a fictional writer. She is also half demon and half human. Being a writer helps her get out her frustration of members in her family, who are all full demons, looking down on her because of that. Especially her demon father. Her books are quite successful. But there is one problem. Now someone is after her. One of her brothers who loves and accepts her is concerned for her safety and decides to hire Jude as her a preternatural bodyguard. Ellina is opposed to the idea thinking everything that happen to her is not that big of a deal to have a bodyguard. Jude meets Ellina and immediately decides that this isn't the job for him. There is something about Ellina that attracts him and that's dangerous for him. Eventually Ellina stubbornly agrees for Jude to stay on for just a little while if only to prove that she really doesn't need a bodyguard. The writing style is not what I remembered, but it has been a while since I read a book from this series. The story is enjoyable even though I think it drags on for just a little then wraps up rather too neat and quick a the end. The smexy times are rather hot and sexy even though it doesn't happen until almost at the end. I think if I hadn't waited so long in between books I might have enjoyed it a little more. But in all a good read.

The types of books she writes are related to why someone is after, as she includes real magical spells in her fiction - not knowing that anyone would actually attempt the spells. Likeable characters, family interactions, drama and humor mixed together with a dose of action, and romance make for a fun story. Love this series!

From day one they’re attracted to each other (of course) and don’t want to have anything to do with each other (naturally) but are forced to make the best of it. The way it fell apart for me was the who, what and why of the conclusion. It didn't hold up to the build-up. After all the trust issues, she decides too easily without any real reason. And the villain was too easy to overcome. But their future plans are cool. What did really like was the scenes with Maksim & Jo at the hospital. Typical new dad. Quick Thoughts: 1) The leather outfit on the front cover model doesn't fit her at all. The pants are too big and need to be pulled up and the top is too wrinkled. It’s supposed to fit like a second skin to be sexy. 2) The hint about the next book doesn't feel like it’s going to follow the way the previous books came together. 3) We never did find out what the white powder was. Fave Scenes: 1) the twin hurricane, surprise company at breakfast, baby-bird men and the wine & valium.

Reading this book was really up there on my to read list as I've read all her vampire/demon books that came before this one. So...finally I've read it and Love didn't disappoint. I mean honestly, the way she tried to play everything off as just bad luck. Jude was a mystery from the beginning, and we find out his story slowly which I liked. Hints here and there until it all came together at the right time. Characters from the previous book made an appearance which I was glad for as those two I loved the most. Now, as for the sex. There wasn't a lot which was shocking as her previous books had a lot. However, I can understand why. Ellina just didn't like Jude from the beginning. Attracted yes, like no. Not to mention she had a bit of a problem with her demon side when she became aroused and that would stop her from jumping Jude's bones anytime. Jude also found her attractive, but the fact that his job was to be protect her kind of kept playing havoc on his brain. All in all, I loved it and am ready for the next one.

I forget how much I love this series until I pick up the next book. The characters are always intriguing, the plots complex, and the humor abundant. The love scenes sizzle off the page, although they could be just a tad more graphic. (yeah, I know, I'm a perv) The only reason this book did not get a 5th star is because I felt the ending lacked detail, in the whole disposing of the bad guy thing. Other than that it was perfect.

He talks about becoming a vampire, but we don’t hear anything about the werewolf aspect. He doesn’t seem to exhibit many of the traits of either one; he supposedly gets all the speed and strength of both, but then he doesn’t need to drink blood or change into a wolf even at the full moon. To me he seems like a strong, bad-ass human. Ellina’s demon side didn’t seem very impressive either; she just has a few outward physical changes but has no power, extra senses, etc. I did enjoy the story as a light-hearted paranormal romance. Despite a bit of confusion over a few points, it was a fun read.

I have to say that I agree with some of the others that have reviewed this book. It was wonderful and the love connection was the most realistic of any of Love's books that I have read. However...there is this HUGE build up through out the book (actually it starts in Maksim and Jo's book...so even bigger build up!) and then it just sort of FREAKING ENDS! I almost really loved this one. It's #4 in the series but I didn't feel that I was missing anything by not reading the first three books. The characters are fun, Ellina is a half demon recluse and Jude is hired by her brother as her bodyguard. There is good chemistry between the two and it was fun to watch their relationship grow. I think I'm pretty annoyed with this one. The entire beginning and more than halfway through the book it was just Jude and Ellina fighting their attraction to one another but after the first fifteen pages of that it was like beating a dead horse. I did enjoy the story and the plot line but the ending left much to be desired. The confrontation at the end was barely that. It wasn't very dramatic. There was no suspense and it fell flat. For a good time, read Kathy Love. This is a light and frothy paranormal romance and it hits the spot if you are looking for a quick, easy read. This book was ok. I am not a huge fan of romance and there was just to much of that in this book. I also felt the story line did not flow well, and the mystery part was just a sideline to the romance. The person stalking Ellina did not get much play time and the other characters seem to be just an afterthought. Its a good book overall but I prefer more mystery and paranormal stuff rather than romance.
