I have love/somewhat-disgusted feelings about this book. (I would say "series of books," but I never finished the flagship book in the series.) On the one hand, I find some common sense advice for the artist, certainly things I can relate to, such as today's (9/26) gem: "There is a connection between self-nurturing and self-respect. If I allow myself to be bullied and cowed by other people's urges for me to be more normal or more nice, then I sell myself out. They may like me better, feel more comfortable with my more conventional appearance or behavior, but I will hate myself. Hating myself, I may lash out at myself and others." However, there is plenty of nonsense in this series, mostly having to do with the "Creator," who only wants what is best for us, if we just reach out and take what is offered. Yeesh, no thanks. I'm good. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure I just need to build up some self confidence and a healthy dose of reality from time to time, not forgetting of course, that it's always good for artists to enjoy childlike play and creativity to avoid writer's block and being creatively stiffed. I'm pretty sure that's good advice for anyone who takes themselves too seriously. Anyway, I enjoy the bits that remind me that there are other artists struggling with blocks and with unhealthy (self-)criticism, I just wish there was something for those of us who don't want our artistic self-help tainted with weird culty spirituality. And I'm not even sure how to search for that.

The Artists Way is one of my bibles. I read through completely & actively participated in every activity the first time June 2014. I've gone through it in varying levels of thoroughness every year since then. I recommend this book to everyone because it will speak to you wherever you are at. The Artists Way is one of my bibles. It’s hard for me to give this book an objective rating because it changed my life. It is a little hokey and written in a meandering, vague way, which frustrates the hell out of some friends I recommended it to. I even started an Artist Way group, a move so out of character for me and that I’m still very proud of. This book isn’t for everyone but if you are one of the ones it is for it can be very helpful and healing. Set up like a workbook and there is crap ton of a particular way of journaling involved.

Started reading this on the first of January. The idea was to read a page every day. That didn't last long. I just didn't find it all that enlightening. Most of the advice seemed to just encourage procrastination and the idea that the artist could never be wrong. Then, after putting it off for about six months, I finished the entire thing in a few days before the end of the year. Either the advice synergized better in the second half, or I was just in a more accommodating mindset. So, in the end, Started reading this on the first of January. A classic I revisit over and over again throughout the years. I had an opportunity to ask Billy Corgan about his prolific work and songwriting and he had mentioned this book had a lot to do with his ability to focus and create art. I look at it like this: there’s a right way and a wrong way to make bread. The artists way is one way to make bread. It’s not the right way and it’s not the wrong way it’s just *a* way. There’s a lot of talk of God and if you’re not particularly religious just replace A classic I revisit over and over again throughout the years. One of my favorites! I give this book a five-star rating because I have read it several times and each time again something new. Maybe that's a new insight, maybe a new perspective, or simply a refreshing of the dreams in my heart and spirit. You can pick up and start this book anywhere. Sometimes I read it daily, sometimes weekly, either way it's worth my time. Perhaps you will enjoy this book too. I highly recommend it. One of my favorites! Excellent book for writers, artists or any creatives looking for support and inspiration on their journey of creation. I highly recommend this book!! It is one that will always be on my shelf, and I'll read it again and again. It is the type of book that each time you read it you can find a new treasure in its pages. I took my time with this book, between writing and reading I found it helped me immensely. I know it isn't for everyone, but for the most part there were many gems to glean. I enjoyed the format and the quotes and Julia's candor and honesty in her own personal daily struggles. I took my time with this book, between writing and reading I found it helped me immensely. When I started to read this book I thought, "Oh no it's going to be too Godly." But it wasn't. It was spiritual, yes, but it was perfect. I loved this book. Julia speaks for all of us “creatives”... I most closely relate to her message about being an open conduit for the Creator to express. She draws her inspiration from her connection to the Creator and her luminous works are a reflection of that connection. Uplifting, supportive encouragement. You can feel how much she loves people, her work and even herself. She shares her own struggles as stepping stones to move through doubt and disappointment - ever open to inspiration that I loved this book. Julia speaks for all of us “creatives”... I listened to the audio book that was read by the author. I was looking for a jump start in creativity for the new year and heard a lot of great things about the book. I found it to be a lot more about spirituality than I was expecting but I was not put off by it. I think my main take away from the book is the "Morning Pages" chapter. There are some cool suggestions in here, and it's full of excellent reminders. It's the type of book where you'll take the parts that serve you and discard the rest. To be expected. My major problem is that it was a very dull read for me. A LOT of talking that could've been condensed. Sometimes, I couldn't even follow her train of thought. First thing, expect to be active while reading each chapter. The work is effective in its aim to make one a better Artist. Gratitude for this step by step, embracing your artist, way of growing . Its a book, that you can do again over time. Watch yourself change in the interim.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so artistically speaking there is no wrong way or right way there is your way because you are the artist so do what you got to do and let it stand on its own representation

This was such an amazing read. Not just because of the idea of morning pages, but because it lays out so many ideas that, while elementary, they are easy to overlook. If you need a push to embrace your creative spirit, read this book. It will give you exactly what you need.
