Lucifer's Lexicon

Availability: Ready to download

In the spirit of Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary, Lucifer's Lexicon collects for the first time in book form the biting definitions which have graced the pages of various libertarian periodicals over the past few years including those which were previously suppressed by Reason Magazine, and many never-before-published ones. Libertarian critic Jeff Riggenbach says in In the spirit of Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary, Lucifer's Lexicon collects for the first time in book form the biting definitions which have graced the pages of various libertarian periodicals over the past few years including those which were previously suppressed by Reason Magazine, and many never-before-published ones. Libertarian critic Jeff Riggenbach says in the Introduction: "Like H. L. Mencken, L.A. Rollins is a purely destructive critic. Like Mencken, Rollins harbors his doubts as to whether improvement of the human condition is possible. And like Mencken, Rollins believes that if it is possible, it is possible only if the unalloyed, unvarnished truth about the human condition is acknowledged. Like Mencken, Rollins believes that no attempt to improve the human condition can possibly be built upon a sound foundation if the absurdities of past 'constructive' thinkers are left unexposed. Moreover, he believes, again with Mencken, that even if no improvement is possible, even if the only thing we can believe in is the futility of everything, there is value in seeing things as they are, and in not confusing things as they are with things as they ought to be." Here are a few samples of definitions from Lucifer's Lexicon: Agriculture, n. The cultivation of legislators to raise subsidies; pillage in the name of tillage. Anti-Semite, n. 1. One who hates Jews. 2. One who is hated by Jews. Government of Laws, n. A government of lawyers. Individualism, n. A doctrine antithetical to individuality, though it is the least unrealistic form of collectivism. Intellectual Ammunition, n. Verbal bullets for Objectivists who want to shoot their mouths off. Blank-out cartridges. Limited Government, n. Limited robbery, limited slavery, and limited murder. Partialitarianism. Aynarchy. Objective, adj. In accord with the subjective feelings, opinions, or prejudices of an Objectivist. Single-Taxer, n. One who advocates one tax too many. Total Depravity, n. In Calvinism, the tendency of human nature to turn away from Calvinism. War on Drugs, n. A war to make the world safe for alcoholism. Yahweh, n. Not my way. An excellent satirical work, highly recommended!

This is, in most ways, a good modern sequel to/supplement to Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary, but marred by the author's own private obsession. Rollins is a "Holocaust revisionist." I need to make that clear. I don't know just what form his "revisionism" takes, but he is evidently very bitter about the reception such theories have gotten since they began to be aired, and goes out of his way again and again to slam the people who he feels have mistreated revisionists or revisionism. He also apparently had some sort of bad experiences with Libertarians and Objectivists, since some of his definitions take slaps at both movements that sound like he was once in or at least close to them, but this would bother most people far less than his unorthodox view of Holocaust history. I'd have given the book four stars but for that. And I think Ambrose Bierce (PBUH) would have had some sharp things to say about his dragging Holocaust revisionism in by the ear whenever he thinks he can.
