A funny book about a boy who has heard many horrible stories about the music teacher. Humorous and good for showing students they can't believe everything they hear. I remember I read these books all the time when I was kid. Each book had a different scary and imaginative twist to things about school. Each book showed some of the fears and uncertainties kids have when going to school or doing new things. But at the end of each book you find out it wasn’t as bad as it was made out to be. This one is no different. This book focuses on the music teacher and how she is said to wear armor and horns and carry a pitchfork. This one is no different. This book focuses on the music teacher and how she is said to wear armor and horns and carry a pitchfork. Each page talks about how the music teach is scary and you have to do just as she says. She does things like use the kids as instrument, stretch out vocal cords, and zaps kids with a laser baton. But in the end, the music teacher really wears a music note dress, music note shoes, and no horns on her head. Also, you find out that music class is actually fun and not scary. I think this is a good book to read at the beginning of the year. Many kids are worried about school and might think the worst. So, a book like this helps show kids that it’s not as bad as you think. Because of how imaginative it is, it makes kids laugh and might even say how absurd some of the teachers sound. By turning the student’s uneasiness into laughter, the kids won’t be so nervous about going to a new class or meeting a new teacher. I really loved the illustrations in this book. There are so much small details but the pages never feel too cluttered. There are usually small harmless creatures in the background of the pages as well as other details. This would make a fun scavenger hunt to try and find all the creatures and see what they are doing. The illustrations use a lot of white space but are still able to add a lot of smaller details into the pictures that you might not notice the first time reading.

This book illustrates how some children feel when walking into a classroom to meet a new teacher. Sometimes teachers can be scary! It is a funny book that definitely would keep students on their toes and can inspire the students to image their own wild adventures in the classroom. This is a book I read when I was younger and would definitely read in my own classroom.

The musical puns are quite lyrical in this story when Hubie has to take a music class. So instead of baseball practice, he'll have music practice. Of course his biggest fear is meeting his music teacher, Miss LaNote, who apparently dresses weird, and does other questionable things, or at least that's what is going around the gossip mill, which only enhances Hubie's imagination, and anxiety. We like the stories in the Black Lagoon series by Mike Thaler and Jared Lee. Many children tend to think of people of authority as scary or mean, but this is just another example of how our expectations do not always live up to reality. Our girls thought the way that the various voice parts (alto, soprano, baritone) were described was hilarious, although I had to explain a little bit about puberty when we got to the part where an older boy's voice changed. The Music Teacher from the Black Lagoon is an effective book to read to a class before they go to music class. This book goes over some of the extreme rumors students can make up about teachers they are not familiar with. For example, these students heard that in music class you have to sing everything, and that the music teacher Miss LaNote uses a pitchfork to keep at her students on the right key. This book follows a young boy who is wondering what his new music teacher is going to be like. He thinks she's this horrible, mean teacher, but in the end he finds out that she's nothing like what he thought she was, she's actually really nice. I could use this book to help my students get rid of those first day jitters and those misconceptions of how teachers are. I used this book last week in my music class; we used phrases and sentences from the story to create unique ostinatos. Of course, our students were glad their music teacher was NOT from the Black Lagoon.

Addresses rumors and how they can be stretched and untrue. Also talks about fears kids can have going to a new teacher and new classes.
