The Neelys’ down-home approach to cooking has earned them the highest accolades from coast to coast. It has also won them millions of viewers on the Food Network. Simply put, the Neelys are all about good food and good times. In this, their eagerly awaited debut cookbook, the Neelys share the delicious food they have been cooking up for years both at home and in their restaurants. Pat and Gina hail from families with a boundless love of cooking and bedrock traditions of sharing meals. At the Neelys’, mealtime is family time, and that means no stinting on “the sauce.” Indeed, that’s one of the Neely secrets: the liberal application of barbeque sauce to almost anything—spaghetti, nachos, salad, you name it. Of course, there are other secrets as well, and you will find them all in the pages of Down Home with the Neelys, along with more than 120 mouthwatering recipes. Here are the tried-and-true southern recipes that have been passed down from one Neely generation to the next, including many of their signature dishes, such as Barbeque Deviled Eggs, Florida Coast Pickled Shrimp, Pat’s Wings of Fire, Gina’s Collard Greens, Grandma Jean’s Potato Salad, Nana’s Southern Gumbo, Memphis-sized Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Slaw, Get Yo’ Man Chicken, and Sock-It-to-Me Cake. Certainly, no self-respecting southerner would dream of offering a meal to a guest without a proper drink, so Pat and Gina have included some of their favorite libations here, too. The Neelys work, laugh, love, and play harder than any family you’ll ever meet. Their love for good food is infectious, and in Down Home with the Neelys, they bring their heavenly inspired cooking down to earth for all to share.

I lived in Memphis for 2 years and have eaten at the Neelys' BBQ restaurant. I remember liking it, but it's been a while ago. Details are fuzzy. I bought this cookbook at a library book sale for .50, sans dust jacket, in a fit of nostalgia and curiosity. I've never really gotten into the Neelys' show on Food Network, and knew little to nothing about their personal story before purchasing this. My lack of knowledge has now been corrected due to the full family story, photographs, and detailed restaurant information found within. Whether it's accurate or just a great PR department or some combination of both, I like them. I want to go to their house for dinner or go to one of their family cookouts. I will definitely make a pointed effort to go back to the restaurant the next time I'm in Memphis. I don't always appreciate all the historical or family dynamic details in a cookbook, but it really worked in this one. At the start of my time with this cookbook, it was well on its way to being 5 stars. I rarely give 5 stars, but the first 4 to 5 recipes I made really impressed. This was worth full price just to get the BBQ Sauce and Coleslaw recipes, both of which were phenomenal. The Chicken with Creole Mustard Cream Sauce is amazing. The Broccoli Cheddar Cornbread or the Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes? Words fail me. The best part is that all of the ingredients for all of the recipes are easily found in your pantry or any generic grocery story. No need to drive around looking for an elusive ingredient. No need to order online. Also, most of the recipes have hints or suggestions which help with the completed product. Then, I hit a few snags. Lorine's Lasagna was good. I would think for every 10 people who try it, 5 will probably declare it their favorite. Not so much for us. It was good, but it was so cheesy it threw the ratio of other ingredients off. There were huge errors in the Sock It To Me Cake recipe. I started making it only to realize the ratio of ingredients were wrong. Only 1/4 cup flour in a whole cake? I found the TV show video or them making it online, and found that several of the cup amounts were left off leaving only the fraction after. Instead of 1/4 cup flour it should have been 2 1/4, etc. This is the only error I found, but as I didn't make all the recipes, I can't vouch for all the others. While not a snag, per se, many of the recipes pack extra salt and sugar. So tasty, but not so great health-wise. It should be noted that maybe as many as half the recipes require a grill or smoker to prepare. There are plenty of good recipes to try without one, but I'm not sure you would get the full impact of the cookbook without trying a few of those. All-in-all, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I plan to make several other recipes from it in the future and put several of the ones I've already tried into my regular rotation.

No heart-healthy recipes here. Just good, home cooking. The sauces and rubs are to die for. Most recipes are also online, however, saving the need to copy them.

I’ve had this book for a number of years, and when I pulled it out today to make the lemon mayonnaise, I realized I’ve made a lot from this cookbook: Lemon mayonnaise Lamb Souviaki with yogurt sauce (which is a staple in my boyfriend’s family’s home – he tried my version and liked it, but I’m apprehensive about having his mom try it) Sweet and tangy pork chops Gina’s “ skinny jeans” potatoes Grilled shrimp, scallions and bacon quesadillas with smoky guacamole I want to make the grilled lemon chicken I’ve had this book for a number of years, and when I pulled it out today to make the lemon mayonnaise, I realized I’ve made a lot from this cookbook: Lemon mayonnaise Lamb Souviaki with yogurt sauce (which is a staple in my boyfriend’s family’s home – he tried my version and liked it, but I’m apprehensive about having his mom try it) Sweet and tangy pork chops Gina’s “ skinny jeans” potatoes Grilled shrimp, scallions and bacon quesadillas with smoky guacamole I want to make the grilled lemon chicken salad with potatoes and pistachios (that sounds sooo good), and the fried green tomatoes, which I’ve been kinda obsessed with making. I love any cookbook that gives tips on buying meat. Collard greens is a staple in our house, and I was really surprised to see the amount of salt the Neelys' recipe called for (1/4 cup) – no wonder there’s so much hypertension. And the idea of putting sugar (a cup) in the greens is nuts! The ham hock has enough salt, and you just need a capful of vinegar in the greens to cut the bitterness. Barbecue is the continuous thread throughout the book. My dad is from Louisiana, and I have to say, he makes the best rubs, barbeque sauce, roux, étouffée, etc. He can taste something from a restaurant and replicate it at home. He really needs to put together a cookbook. But this is a Memphis-inspired cookbook, and there is a difference.

I enjoyed reading about the lives and adventures of these two. The recipes were an added bonus for me. I will try the bacon pimento cheese for sure.

I very much enjoy watching the Neelys' cooking show on the Food Network. Pat Neely's gentle humor is the perfect counterpoint for the spirit and sass of his wife, Gina. These folks really know how to cook, and they cook much more than just the BBQ for which they are famous. There is a wide variety of recipes in this book. Food that is prepared with love and intuition, and then well-seasoned with spices and flavorings. Some of the recipes and cooking methods are very similar to my own family's cooking traditions like "Lorine's Brown Flour Gravy", "Sweet and Spicy Slaw", "Chocolate Chip Muffins", "Southern Creamed Corn", and "Molasses Baked Beans". Then there are wonderfully different recipes like "Crab Cakes with Lime Mayonnaise", "Turkey, Brie, and Cranberry Panini", and "Deep-Fried Pork Chops and Quick Vegetable Soup". The desserts are all tempting, but the "Southern Red Velvet Cake" is spectacular. The photo shows a three-layer cake that looks to be three stories high! The Neelys own and operate several famously successful BBQ restaurants. In this book, they share their recipes for BBQ seasoning and BBQ sauce and many tips and techinques for preparing mouth-watering barbequed foods. Just as compelling as all the wonderful food is the amazing real-life love story of Pat and Gina Neely, and how their two families work together and support each other in their business. Pat and his brothers started the BBQ business with hard work, skill, and determination. Gina and Pat were high school sweethearts who went their separate ways and married others after graduation. Ten years later, they met up again, and a high school reunion turned into a reunion romance. When Gina joined Pat in the family business, a match was made in heaven, and a loving partnership was formed. Bobby and Jamie Deen featured the Neelys on their program "Road Tasted", and then their mother, Paula Deen, featured Pat and Gina on "Paula's Party". TV history was made, and two Food Network stars were born. Great story, great food, inspiring people! Review Copy Gratis Borzoi Books

I have borrowed this several times from a local library, and have made many recipes from this. I gave it 4 stars, instead of 5 stars, only because some of the ingredients are nearly impossible to find where I live. And, because of the scarcity of those few ingredients, there are a few recipes I am not able to make. But what I have made was loved by me and my family. And their stories and comments; they are hilarious. If only I had as much fun in my kitchen as they're having in theirs. Good cookbook, the book was unique in that it shares the couple’s background, how they met, married, opened their restaurants and got their own TV show. The recipes are great, though not light on the calories. I made the shrimp with spicy sauce and corn bread. Both were quite tasty. Lots of advice for cooking BBQ and making sauces and rubs. Of course lots of BBQ recipes, but also lots of other items and drinks to make a good variety of foods.

I found the cookbook to be as warm and inviting as their tv show. Plus, the pictures of thier family was an added bonus. As far as the recipes, I thought it was great that they manage to get barbeque into almost everything! All of the recipes sounded delicious, and I can't wait to make them.
