I was sick a few years ago and my best friend read it out loud to me. I enjoyed it well enough but I don't remember much other than the line 'he kissed me that is something we had started doing' (like what the heck?) It is a cute boy next door romance. Bitter old woman softens in time. I was sick a few years ago and my best friend read it out loud to me. When I opened the book I wasn't sure whether to close it and discard it altogether or continue to read. But I did continue to read and I have to say that the way Toddy was treated by her birth mother was by any means vile. Her mother was self-centred and only cared about her career. Why have a child if you aren't going to care for them properly?! Sorry, it's just I hate characters in books that think they have the right to be selfish and neglect their child or a child in general? Anyway, I realised that as the book progressed, Toddy's life started to get better with the love of her new family, the elderly woman Olivia Hale and her sick granddaughter Helene who from the moment she sees Toddy comes to love her as a sister. After some time, she is reunited with her friends from the Orphanage, Kit and Laurel. She also ends up in love with a boy named Chris. His mother can't stand her and says that her son could have caught the eye of any girl in town. Wretched woman. I've decided to upgrade my rating to 3 stars. I shouldn't have been so quick to judge the book. A great yet sad story.
