Change of Scenery by Davalynn Spencer follows the life of Ella as she tries to reclaim her life by moving to Colorado. And while she has made peace with the fact that her love for riding and romance had been permanently taken away from her by a tragic accident, a chance meeting with Cale changes everything. And while she has made peace with the fact that her love for riding and romance had been permanently taken away from her by a tragic accident, a chance meeting with Cale changes everything. Throughout the story, we get insight into both Cale and Ella’s lives and the tragic events that have shaped who they are. Although the story is based in the 1900s, many of their problems are quite relatable, especially their grief. The main themes of this emotionally-charged novel are; love, family, healing and second chances. And the author does a splendid job at bringing them to life. Davalynn Spencer brings us into Ella’s pain, making it relatable and easy to empathize with. We are also given details into the life of Cale’s grief-stricken brother, Hugh as he struggles to move on in the wake of his wife’s death. Another important character is Hellen, a mother figure to both Cale and Hugh who takes up the care of the latter’s young children, eventually filling a big hole in their family. Ultimately, this story is as tender as it is personal. The plot is solid though somewhat predictable and the characters are well developed. The author has really excelled in bringing the 1900s to life, successfully building a narrative that combines both the age of horses and that of the automobile. The one thing that I did not expect was how Cale behaves towards Ella – he pushes her to be better and not settle for less. Otherwise, most of the narrative tallies with what I expect from a western romance novel. The writing style used matches the typical style of historical fiction, perfect for fans of the genre looking to be immersed. When it comes to catering to historical romance audience, the author has truly excelled. If you love elegant and heartfelt historical romances, filled with intriguing characters, and set in the western frontier, then Change of Scenery by Davalynn Spencer is the book for you. This was a western that was hard for me to put down, and stayed with me long after the last page.

Another great story in this series! It was so fun to read a story that takes place during a time period I don't see often in books, especially Westerns. 1911. Colorado. When automobiles were starting to make an appearance (noisily!) When motion pictures were just beginning to gain popularity. And of course, when our story takes place. It also has both moving pictures and automobiles playing secondary roles. A Change of Scenery has some great characters and enjoyable dialog. I think Davalynn Spencer is my favorite Western dialogue writer. :-) Her cowboys turn phrases that bring a smile to my face and yet she doesn't overuse expressions to make them seem ... well, overdone. And the descriptions!! Oh my word, I love the way she paints her scenery and brings it to life. Making me long to see the places myself! One of my favorite aspects of Cale and Ella's relationship was how he was constantly looking to help challenge her, not satisfied with allowing her to settle. To settle for pain. To settle for fear. He helped to break her out of the fortress she had erected to protect her heart from being hurt and he helped her to learn how to love and to trust and to live again. I adored Cale's nephews! Their energy and enthusiasm and their hearts full of excitement made me smile. I could just see them gamboling around the ranch, eager to help and managing to be right underfoot when it was least convenient. And, oh, the sweet way they doted on Ella and loved to help her out! If you are a fan of Western fiction and cowboys, I encourage you to read A Change of Scenery. It is part of The Cañon City Chronicles, which follows a family and yet each story stands well on its own. Originally Reviewed on Among The Reads I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.

If I could only choose one word to describe this book I would have to choose interesting. I learned many things while I was enjoying the story, especially about creating “moving pictures” or “flickers” in 1911. The writer lures you in with a charming town and endearing characters. Once there with these folks who become friends, you won’t want to leave. The author sprinkles in a few goodies throughout this story. The 4th book in the Canon City Chronicles is every bit as good as the first 3. I highly recommend it. Reading about the fourth generation of Hutton’s was a pleasure. I liked how the author incorporated the movie industry’s history in Canon City into the novel. As a resident of Fremont County it is fun to catch glimpses of modern CC in this novel set in the early 20th century. I highly recommend this book.

Wonderfully complicated characters Davalyn has a real gift drawing feisty independent women, with talents, interests and a detailed backstory. Ella, Helen and Clara are all real people with real opinions~all of her characters have a place in this sweetly told romantic tale. Keep on loving the cowboy and spinning your particular brand of Westerns~they are worth staying up to 0219 for!

A tender love story about healing and facing the thing that holds you back. Can Ella see herself as she really is, and stop seeing herself as damaged goods - like some others do? Can Cale help her see that she is so much more than what she has come to believe? Because he, and other special people in her life, see far beyond the surface and into her heart. Once I started reading this, I couldn't put it down until it was finished. Another fine example of this author's award winning writing. Author Davalynn Spencer’s book is classified as an “Inspirational Historical Western Romance.” But it’s more than that. Heartwarming. Informative. Humorous. So many words to describe this book. The characters are well developed and interesting. They make you happy to have met them and leave you wanting more. I really enjoyed the time period, where cars are beginning to show up in the West yet horses still abound. A Change of Scenery has something for everyone, including a sweet romance. Well done story. There's the excitement of the bear, plus the movie-making craziness. Cale is uncle to three rambunctious boys that create their own kind of excitement and joy wherever they go. Riding herd on them is Helen, their grandma-like housekeeper, who becomes good friend to Ella. Ella and Cale seem like opposites... They are when you look that them, but they connect in a way that they can't deny, try as they may. Well done story. There's the excitement of the bear, plus the movie-making craziness. Ella could have let her traumatic accident keep her from taking a chance like joining the film studio. She could have let the insults and actions of a jealous actress make her give up and go back home. Yes, she nervous around cars and horses and wouldn't ride until Cale coaxed her to but I don't blame her after what happened. He didn't want to fall for the stubborn traveling seamstress. The fourth book in The Canon City Chronicles series a well written story that kept me turning pages. Ella Canaday goes to Colorado to be a seamstress for a moving-picture company, after the death of her fiancee in a motor accident that left her unable to ride. Cowboy Cale Hutton's ranch is where the film is to be shot. A nice story if you enjoy reading Christian Romance. Ella was struggling with her past and haunted by her fears which were preventing her from moving forward with her life. I liked how strong Ella was in overcoming her fears. The love story was genuine and real. I would recommend this book for readers of Western Christian Romance.
