My thoughts are my own and my review is honest. I'm going to admit something before we dive in. I saw the main title and, as an aspiring author who is open to the idea of self-publishing, jumped at the chance to read a potentially invaluable resource. I didn't read the subtitle and realize that this is specifically for non-fiction writers and was surprised when the first point of advice talks about how non-fiction is about the author, not the reader. After I got over that surprise, though, I continued reading and discovered that this is still a great resource, even if you're not trying to publish non-fiction. The advice that is given about making non-fiction interesting also applies to fiction, and everything else about succeeding in self-publishing is very much the same. (Possible exception or surprisingly helpful advice, depending on the fiction writer: the section on hiring and working with a ghostwriter.) Who you market to may be different, when and what type of editing services you avail of may be different, etc. but the bones of the process are the same, and as such this book will shed light on the process for all hopeful authors. There's advice in here I haven't yet come across in all the other reading and listening I've done on this topic, and for that reason alone I would encourage aspiring authors or experienced authors new to self-publishing and self-marketing to pick up this book and read it cover to cover as early in your journey as possible. Perhaps it's because I haven't been listening to the non-fiction publishing educators before now, but I've never considered the "look inside" preview before. It seems to be that everyone else doling out publishing advice is focused on cover and synopsis and forgets about everything else that greets the potential customer when they come across a book's listing. I very much appreciate the fact that this book includes a section on beta readers, as well. This is a concept I didn't fully understand until I volunteered as a beta reader for a friend I met on a ARC review team. It's not something I normally see mentioned in resources like this. Having reading this book, I will definitely be looking at their online resources and perhaps seeking out other publications and services this company has to offer when it's my turn to publish. This is a great tool that I feel can help authors of all genres and categories, though it has clearly been carefully curated for non-fiction authors.

Such a great example of writing a #noboringbook. Great balance on technical practical content and engaging fun content. The writing draws you in and keeps you turning pages. I usually don’t read books like these, but I'm really glad I picked this one up! It was filed with helpful advice, sound action items, and the occasional witty, I dare say sarcastic, humor. It reminded me a bit of the “How to... for Dummies” books, but more helpful and less humor. I found myself taking notes and laughing to myself as I read it. 10/10 would recommend if you’re beginning to contemplate writing a book. I should say though, that it is practical advice in an inspirational sort of way, I usually don’t read books like these, but I'm really glad I picked this one up! From the idea stage to the promotion, this book covers all of the ins and outs of writing a book that is reader-focused, interesting, well-designed and marketable. She has taken all of the information from her business Book Launchers, and from her funny and informative YouTube channel, and synthesized it all into one clear, easy-to-navigate roadmap of a book. I love that she is Canadian, so is able to address the international aspect of writing and distributing a self-published book as well. As a client of Book Launchers and a steady consumer of Julie's videos, I can definitely attest to the value of every chapter of this book. It will prove invaluable to anyone who has a great non-fiction idea and wants to get it out into the world. I highly recommending this book to anyone who is interested in creating their own "No Boring" book. Her guidance and advice has allowed me to become a published author of a book that I can be proud of, and she can do that for you too!

This revelation inspired me to continue my sit-down marathon with confidence, because of Julie’s step-by-step map that I frankly needed. Filled with tips to avoid writing a boring book, consistent with her philosophy of “No Boring Books,” and many other resources that truly make self-publishing a team endeavor, each page offered “insider” gems. I also appreciated her marketing tips to sell more books “for the reader,” that benefit the reader. Gratefully, she followed her own advice.—Highly recommended! ~Efren A. “Do or do not. There is no try.” Anyone who quotes Yoda is ok in my book. Julie Broad put together an enjoyable book packed with valuable information. She gives the information without making it dry. I found myself looking forward to the next story. My favorite part was at the beginning of the book: Be, Do, Have. You’re going to love that. I love the language and point of view Julie Broad brought to this book and I immediately connected with her. Thanks to this book, I finally gained the confidence I need to continue with my book and now self-publish it and see the success it will bring. I also felt a rush of relief of how she says a requirement for success is to experience failure and hardship and that just brought a smile on my face because I know what it is like to struggle and fail and now I have a whole new direction to add to my book. We will consider adding this title to our Non-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

Great book to guide you through the journey of writing a book: starting from your own book idea and target audience to publishing and getting ranks on selling. The book is great by not providing a receipy for "sweet cookies" and how easy things are but to telling the truth that only hard work pays off. As someone who has worked for many years in media and publishing, I would say I agree wholeheartedly with 95% of what Julie Broad had to say. The book is also quite entertaining, and I laughed out loud a couple of times. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Julie Broad explains things I never knew that I never knew about different publishing options. Did you know that there are books on best seller lists that are not monetarily successful? At the same time, there are books that sell thousands of copies that never make it to those lists. Traditional publishing generally leaves you little control of your own work and profit margins, but still, you are responsible for much of your own promotional activity. Traditional publishing generally leaves you little control of your own work and profit margins, but still, you are responsible for much of your own promotional activity. Self-publishing can be a great deal of work, but the author lists numerous types of resources that can lead you through the process. From hiring up to three editors, not all of whom care about commas or spelling, to buying ISBN’s for your different formats, this is a must-read book. The book was an easy read for me, and there is a focus on writing to a target audience. Many tips are offered on how to begin marketing before your book launches and how to continue after books are available. There may be much non-book money to be earned once you have achieved credibility as an author and an expert on your subject. Suggestions on outlining and writing for your target audience are included. I am especially impressed by the many links to outside sources. Although the author would love for you to hire her company to take care of details, she is generous with information on what services they use, and examples of when they employ each one. Someone with the time and energy could clearly succeed with these steps. If you feel that traditional publishing is the only “real” or “legitimate” option, I hope that you find a top publisher that gives you lot of support in this changing environment. Remember, also, that very few people buy books based on the publisher’s name. Good luck, with that, and be sure to understand everything included in the contract.

Crammed full of resources, links, and Julie Broad’s own life lessons, “Self-Publish and Succeed” is a cornucopia of coffee-fueled Canadian cheer, written with the non-fiction author in mind. Already a fan of the videos on BookLaunchers.TV YouTube channel, I can hear Julie’s inspiring and encouraging voice ringing through in each word of this book. It’s sure to be a treat on audiobook! She’s a cheerleader and a coach, delivering tough truths, but providing emotional support, in this highly informative, humor-infused new release. She will call you out on your excuses, encourage you to confront your closet monsters, and help you overcome imposter syndrome. So grab a copy, enjoy celebrity stories and a bear attack, breathe in the “award-winning” new book smell, and get advice from dear Grandma Broad. Be brave, not boring!

I wish I had read it before publishing any of my Henley Santa books. As a self-published children’s author, I thought that I knew everything about how to self-publish. Julie’s book showed me that I was wrong. I had never considered what to include in the pages on "Look Inside" for a start.

This book didn’t tell me much that I didn’t know already to be honest – it’s probably best suited to those people who haven’t written or self-published a book before. But it was easy to read and fairly enjoyable. It had more of a “self-help” tone than I was expecting. I thought it would be more practical advice – some of it was – but a lot of it was more “You can do this!” I must admit to finding this slightly irritating! It also – like a lot of self-help books – felt a bit padded out.
