I loved Mason ans Mariah's story! We meet Mariah who is a freshmen at college and is coming home for the holidays but she discovers that her family isn't how she remembers it and she learns a secret about her parents. She decides to go off on a roadtrip to visit her dad, but ends up meeting her ex best friend Mason. mason is secretive and mysterious and their friendship feels different but as they make their cross country roadtrip it becomes clear they have feelings for each other. I don't want to spoil the rest but it was so good! I LOVED seeing Mason and Mariah's love story develop and it had me in my feelings several times, ESPECIALLY toward the end! I'm not sure what that other reader Creya is talking about when she mentions they jump into bed together. maybe she didn't understand the "Then" and "Now" flashbacks throughout the book, but it was very well done and helped give a view into Mason and Mariah's friendship. Also many people have sex with their best friends when you're falling for them! My fiance started out as my best friend ;-P Anyway, loved this book! This is my 3rd book by Ms Nicks and this might be my favorite!

A marriage is revealed as a sham due to one party’s coming out as gay. A character is hiding from close friends that he is sick. Our main character doesn’t know if she can forgive these people and blah blah blah. Why couldn’t it have been a nice road trip? Why’d we have to throw in all these unbelievable scenarios? In one minute, Mariah is telling Mason she’s not sure if she loves him as a friend or something more. The next minute, they’re naked. Wtf? I don’t know about you, but I don’t sleep with my best friends. I actually enjoyed the writing a lot, so it’s too bad the concepts fell short.

North Star Angel by Mila Nicks Rating: 4 stars SOoooo, I just finished this book like 10 minutes ago and it was a very strong book. Obviously, since I didn't rate it 5 stars, it wasn't my FAVORITE book, but it was still really good. The plot was really good. I reminded me kind of like Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson. The plot twist thingy was also really good. It was unexpected and I liked it. The characters weren't all the best. Half of them I loved and half of them not so much. I feel like the only two characters we knew the most about were Mariah and Mason. It would also have been cool to see more of their past. HOWEVER, I really enjoyed how the povs switch from then and now. oooo so this was in 1997 but it felt kind of a lot more modern. One last thing, there were a couple of scenes that were unnecessary and I skipped over. But overall, I really enjoyed reading this and it was a pretty fast-paced and quick read :) Recommend if you liked Amy and Roger's Epic Detour, and by the name, I'm guessing The Geography of Lost Things as well. As always I enjoy Ms. Nicks books. This one was touching and just beautifully written. I loved Mariah and Mason friendship that turned into wonderful love. There’s definitely something different about falling in love with your best friend! They know you, understand you and get you in ways that no one else can. These aspects literally flew out of the pages as I read this couple. The conflicts and stuggles they had going on separately BROKE ME!!! I couldn’t stop my tears from falling. Even though they had completely different types of problems and their situations had them deep in worry and confusion, my heart filled up again seeing the slefless and unconditional love they showed for one another. Believe me, the grand gestures of this book are heartbreakingly beautiful! I’ve loved Mila Nicks’ books in the past and this... THISSSSS OMG... I can’t... my heart... MY HEART!!!! Aaaahhhh!!!! [I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review through BookSirens] I loved this book so much! For a simple standalone romance about a university freshman girl who finds herself embarking on a spontaneous Christmas road trip with her estranged best male friend, this was quite an emotional rollercoaster of a read! Mariah and Mason both feel like very real and relatable characters and Nicks does a fantastic job of building the unresolved romantic and personal tension between them. Having the narrative flash back and forth between their past and present was a great element as well and I really wanted to keep reading to find out what had happened between them or why Mason was heading to California. The pacing of the storyline is great all throughout and really ramps up in the middle of the book with plenty of shocking twists. I was also filled with a sense of nostalgia for both the 90’s and being a newly independent young adult and setting out on my own for the first time. (Actually, my then-friend-now-husband and I got to know each other better under mildly similar circumstances to Mariah and Mason, which made me even more nostalgic.) Overall, a wonderful book!

I enjoyed this book. While the story may be a little predictable, the author makes up for that by writing a story that makes us like and care about the two lead characters. They become friends when they’re thirteen years old. We meet up with them again when they’re eighteen and their friendship has become estranged. During a troubling time for both of them, they go on a cross country trip together and their relationship changes again. This one had some ups and downs for me, and I think with some editing, I would have enjoyed it more. I wasn’t a fan of the excessive ellipses and em dashes (nineteen in the first two chapters) or the combination word “not’ve” which most definitely is not a word. But it got better as the book went on. Mason is excessively angry towards any other men, and we never find out the reason. Being justified in his anger one time doesn’t explain that, though. Also, a big gripe of mine in books is incredibly painful first-time sex. It doesn’t have to be so bad, that’s why they invented lube. It would be nice if authors would include that, so they can help all these teens out there who read in books how incredibly awful it is when it doesn’t have to be. When I look past the issues I have, this a cute storyline, and the alternating timelines were told well. I highlighted multiple, insightful things such as “...it was the many things left unsaid that spoke volumes.” I liked watching Mariah and Mason try to reconnect with the distance between them, and I enjoyed the small bits of nostalgia that came with the setting of the book. Overall, I think other readers will enjoy this one.

First, I want to thank NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. I read this book in an e-book fashion. I’ll start with saying that the book is really cute. I knew where the story was going before it got there, like way before. The book is also written very casually. A lot of the paragraphs end with ... which I thought was interesting. It floated back-and-forth between the past in the present, and while I don’t like a whole lot of detail in too much worthiness, I was confused as to what they were talking about because they were so much dialogue. A couple of the chapters started with random dialogue and I had no idea what they were talking about, and sometimes it never got clarified. I feel like there should’ve been extra detail or information there to really draw us in but there wasn’t. Overall, the book was really cute and it is a quick read, but it is predictable.

    Chelé-----4 The Love of Books

I liked this book but there was definitely potential for me to love it. I liked the relationship between Mason and Mariah, they become best friends once Mason's family moves in next door. The book goes between the past and the present which isn't my favorite but it did work for this book, I just wish I believed their friendship more, a few stolen moments and intimate encounters still didn't help me to believe their love story. Mid book during their road trip, (which I looove road trips in books) there's an incident that felt kind of forced and just made the whole thing seem meh. The big reveal was a bit lack luster as well and I feel like it was a bit rushed. Since this book was set in the 90s I was hoping for more references besides the occasional usage of a pay phone, I feel like there were a lot of missed opportunities. All in all I'm glad I read North Star Angel but I don't think it will be a book that will stay with me beyond this review.

This is more than a cute story about two 18-year-olds on a cross-country trip. Mason is hiding a secret about what waits for him in California, and that secret will change everything. Also, there were things that could have been explored in the front story that were sort of glossed over (especially regarding Mariah's parents). There wasn't much sexual tension, which I guess is normal for a YA book. But the result was, the change in their relationship, from friends to more, seemed abrupt. The ending was also abrupt and didn't take full advantage of the emotion inherent in the situation. Still, if you like YA road trip books, this one might be a good choice for you. A beautiful love story between best friends who fall for each other over a road trip. The characters were interesting and their friendship was sweet. One of my favorite parts of the book were all the flashbacks to past moments in their friendship. They were well done and helped give me an idea of the type of bond Mason and Mariah had. There were several twists in this book I didn't see coming. I almost wish there was a sequel so we could follow Mason and Mariah into adulthood. Thank you for the chance to read, NetGalley! This was for sure a sweet story. I actually think though, it would have greatly benefited from being longer! I think having more scenes from Mariah and Mason’s past would have helped build their chemistry in the present day scenes quite a lot. I didn’t have quite enough to go on to get super invested in the characters. All in all, it was a good read, just not necessarily one I want to pounce on again, which is mostly how my rating system works.

North Star Angel is not your average story about a college student returning home for Christmas. I love that many parts of the story are traditional clichés, but yet this book seems refreshingly new. The main characters (and ex-best friends) Mariah and Mason are delightful and the banter between the two will have you feeling nostalgic and your heart will be saying "awwww". Both characters are highly relatable to most young adults (especially right out of high school). However, I didn't really get the flashback of their childhood. As well as that, they were a bit too much information and different stories lines. Secondly, the themes that were approached were powerful and thoughtful even though not developed enough. Last not least, I would say this book had a great idea but it was a bit like a draft...

This was a sweet tale of seeing past errors, understanding peoples characters, and discovering yourself Mariah is a bit of a brat, I understand her anger but her behavior is a little unreasonable for me. Mason seems like a genuinely sweet boy with more life experience and a better handle on the situation. There were a lot of conflicts that arose and typically I would say to many but for some reason, it worked for this storyline I enjoyed the journey and discovery
