Original, funny, with heaps of action. Jarrett keeps the reader engaged in a fast paced adventure full of dark twists, intriguing characters and a few gruesome incidents. Lots of ideas are explored and come together in a well woven tale.

I really enjoyed this. Easy to read and I really like the characters, Carina Keel is awesome and Canopus is a friend that I feel we all need. Loved Drexel too. Vince was an interesting character and I was surprised by the twists. Lots of fun, looking forward to the next book!

Fun thriller, with an interesting take on angels and zombies. The red girl is super interesting, I hope we see more of her in the next books.

DNF. I made it to about 20% in and had to stop. In theory The Hive is a book I should have very much enjoyed: an FBI agent (who happens to be a practicing witch) and her partner investigate paranormal occurrences in Portland, her latest case involving the creature who killed her father and the mysterious “Red Girl.” Sadly, this novel disappointed on numerous levels. I found the character work lacking. Carina Keel and Jon Canpous were flat and boring, showing Little (if any) growth. The reader lear DNF. I made it to about 20% in and had to stop. I found the character work lacking. Carina Keel and Jon Canpous were flat and boring, showing Little (if any) growth. The reader learns both are FBI agents, Keel is a witch, and Canpous is a “legend” in the field . . . and that’s about it. The supporting characters were dull, often reduced to stereotypes and plot conveniences. I could deal with poor character work if the plot was interesting. It was not. While Mr. Jarrett did immediate jump into the stakes of the novel – namely trying to locate and neutralize the paranormal threat, I never felt any tension or concern whist reading. The stakes remained constant, therefore they did not feel real. Unfortunately the odd pacing, weird time jumps, and dropped plot points all lead toward an unfocused scattered story. Mr. Jarrett’s writing was extremely simplistic, doing little to build the atmosphere or set the tone of the novel. I also found the over use of certain phrases distracting. Sadly, this was an excellent idea that failed miserably in its execution.

A great story and a really fun read. When I read the premise (FBI agents and the supernatural) my first thought was "X-Files" but it turned out to be nothing like that. It's probably closer to Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers Of London, although not that similar to that either. It lies on an original point between the two and recommended for fans of either of them. there are some exciting set-pieces . The diner and the morgue were highlights. Overall, thoroughly recommended if you like easy-to-read action-packed supernatural thrillers.

I got through almost 80% of this book but I just lost interest in it. It could just be that I wasn't really in the mood to read this right now but it just seemed to be dragging along.
