However, “Notes on the Writing of Horror: A Story” is a black sheep in the herd of black sheep that is Ligotti’s oeuvre. It is more abstract than his later, slightly more Lovecraftian works, and has a rarely large dose of gallows humor as well. Despite this, the story moves towards a horrifyingly surreal and vivid conclusion. In “Notes” Ligotti takes sat Decaying towns. Isolation and nihilism. Puppets and mannequins. Bizarre festivals.
