WARNING: This poetry collection deals with issues such as body image, body dismorphia, eating disorders, eating disorders, anxiety, and self-harm. Read at your own discretion. I find it difficult to review good poetry. The nature of the form tends to require the writer to express themes and emotions in a vivid manner, generally using the least amount of words to express those vision and visceral feelings. It feels impossible for me to adequately review the subtle -- and sometimes not so subtle -- elegance of a well written poem as it has already, expressed, explained, and accentuated itself purely in the act of manifesting. The best thing I can say about this book -- as it is a new phenomenon I have only recently experienced with one other text, "Slaughter-House Five" -- is that I want to read it backwards. I was to read it out of order. I want to read only the emboldened lines, the single-word pages in sequence, the two page spanning sentences in isolation. I want to read the poems to figure out how they reference previous passages and figure out the method and mode of the rhymes when they do appear. I want to do all these things because the diction here is so brief and sharp in how it speaks to the image of the self -- the feeling of being a body moving through the world -- of the struggle of grappling with the very idea of self; that I feel reading it backwards or embolden or both or neither I would be able to discern even more, possibly and likely beyond the intended. I would not describe the book as bloody except in how it draw our emotions; I would not say it is gorish but to express how messy it gets as it plunges into the body.

Beauty is Blood and Gore is a powerful collection of poetry. Hamlet balances stark honesty and hyperbole with delicacy, providing the reader something to hold onto at the end of each stanza.

Been meaning to get a copy for a while, finally did last week. Went in free of most expectations and was happy to find that I really enjoyed this collection! Tabbed 6 of the poems that resonated with me the most for easier access in the future. It's been a while since I've really gone in on poetry, but this and La Dispute has inspired me to read more and of it and maybe even get back into my own writing.
