I never thought I would give five stars to a book about raising chickens, but I really have to do so in this case. This book clearly took a lot of work, care and thought in the creation. Other than the fact that chickens are far more complex and intelligent than we give them credit for, I didn't know much about them before reading this. Now, I'm so glad to have this in my possession. The author takes you from the very beginning of just thinking about raising backyard chickens to the end of their lives. I learned about the main types of chickens, their psychology, the structure of an egg, the anatomy of a chicken, herbs to supplement their diet, how to introduce new chickens, and on and on. I honestly can't think at the moment of anything that he left out. I also appreciated the writing. Overall, it was clear and concise. No frills. And yet, the enthusiasm and affection for these animals came through loud and clear, with moments of humor. Now, I am not a meat eater and most of my work with chickens has been through re-homing them as part of volunteer work I knew that butchering and other ideas, like shooting predators, would not be to my liking. However, I still felt that the author was respectful in his approach. He acknowledged other alternatives. He also emphasized the humane treatment of all creatures and acknowledged issues of ethics, responsibility and legality in both animal welfare and environmental stewardship. I respected and appreciated that. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I really enjoyed this book!

A good and informative read, just like the author's other book on Worms. Anatomy of chicken & egg, slaughtering, disease management, etc. were well explained. Lots of information, but as the author himself says knowledge is good, but it is useful only when put to practice. A good and informative read, just like the author's other book on Worms.
