“Can I touch you?” Tal asked, stepping closer. “Yes.” Tal wrapped his arms around Athlen’s shaking body and held on. “I’ve got you.” “I know.” His breath was cool on Tal’s neck. “For how long?” “Until you tell me to let go.” (view spoiler)[Rather than a The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue meets The Pirates of the Caribbean, I feel like this is more of a retelling of The Little Mermaid from the prince's point of view and I love every single second of it. (hide spoiler)] In Deeper Waters is a beautifully told queer high fantasy story with wonderful characters that will pull you in and a romance that will make your heart skip a beat. Thrown into a world with pirates, magic, adventure, and a romance so lush that it is absolutely precious, this story certainly charmed me. While I do like this book, I'd just like to point out a few tidbits I have before getting into the good stuff. I honestly felt a little short with the ending, it seemed lacking for me. Nonetheless, it is very sweet and just gets me warm in all the right places. I would also have to nitpick the world-building. The backdrop in this one is so very pretty and I really wish the author utilized it more to their advantage because it would definitely make the story more interesting but again, I think this story worked itself out in the end anyway. On to the good stuff, I really like many things about this story. One would be the premise- despite the lack of worldbuilding, it is absolutely gorgeous and I just can imagine this whimsical story playing before my very eyes- the narrative definitely really helped with that. The protagonist's voice is so fresh and his personality is just amiable. I love reading Tal navigating through all of this- the magic, his identity in general, it's just really good stuff that's really well-written. There are also family-themed undertones here and while it comes second to third maybe with the adventure going on, it's very notable as it is excellently conveyed. This is overall a really likeable story and while it did not unravel the way I expected it to, I just really like it. The thing I most appreciate though is the romance between Tal and Athlen. It is very subtle but it really speaks volumes- just their little touches and small exchanges really sets off these sparks of chemistry between them and I just devour every single interaction because it's just beautiful and soft. I am not kidding when I say the romance here will effortlessly sweep off your feet. How their relationship develops throughout the story is truly something I enjoyed reading. There is a certain tone to this story that I really like- it's just very heartwarming but at the same time simply deluxe. I can't really put it into words, it's just enchanting. It's just an utterly amazing book filled of wonderful themes and I'm just all here for it and seriously recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good adventure and a romance that sparkles brighter than any sea. (view spoiler)[PS. This honestly felt like a Disney movie on paper with a gay prince and you can't convince me otherwise. PPS. Also, merman. How can you not like this when there is literally a cute and precious merman?? (hide spoiler)]

He’s spent most of his life hidden away in the castle, as all are afraid he might inadvertently reveal his magical abilities, which could shatter the peace that his family has worked so hard to preserve. Now, he’s been allowed to partake in the kingdom’s traditional coming-of-age tour, and travel throughout the kingdom with his older brother and the family’s bodyguard. But not long into the journey they find a burning ship and a mysterious prisoner, Athlen, with whom Tal feels an immediate connection. Athlen convinces Tal to free him, only to watch him jump overboard into the ocean. Tal is devastated by Athlen’s disappearance, sure he must have drowned. When he sees Athlen a few days later, he’s surprised—and very pleased. But their time together is fleeting, as Tal is kidnapped by pirates who want to trick him into revealing his magical powers, which will instigate a war. It will take all of his strength and cunning to survive and get back home—and it’s Athlen’s turn to save him now. What secrets are Athlen hiding? Will they help Tal or put him in more danger? Can Tal warn his family about what is happening before war breaks out? And can two very different young men from two different walks of life find happiness? There are lots of obstacles to overcome. This book was utterly charming and so sweet. It felt a little like The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue , a little like Carry On , but yet all its own. I really enjoyed all of these characters and their immediate acceptance of people’s differences. I don’t know if In Deeper Waters is intended to be the first in a series, but I’d love to see this world and these characters that Lukens created again. This isn’t to say that nothing else happens, apart from two boys being into each other. It’s quite the opposite actually, it’s action-packed. It’s just that even with everything that’s going on, with kidnappings and ransoms, and a threat of war, there’s always this undercurrent of love. The romance feels like the central part of the novel, even though it technically really isn’t. I think it’s the love that ultimately makes this a very gentle book. Not even the romance, but love in general. Because yes, Tal has a family that he loves fiercely and who loves him back to death; there are friends becoming a found family; there are people just willing to help others. To balance out every dramatic thing that takes place, there’s at least one tender scene, overflowing with love. In Deeper Waters might not be the kind of book to keep you at the edge of your seat with anticipation (the vibes are pretty clear from the start: there will be a happy ending), but it sure is one that will make you feel safe & welcomed. And, most importantly, loved. It’s a story you want to read on a rainy day, so its softness would warm you (and your heart).

4.75 stars I received an advanced reader copy via Netgalley and Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own. The synopsis of "In Deeper Waters" sounded very promising, and I’m happy to report that the story really held up! It was easy to understand, and the world building was done incredibly well. There was no info dumping, nor was it written vaguely. The adventure was such a fun time too. I adored every minute of it! The main characters where especially likeable. 4.75 stars I received an advanced reader copy via Netgalley and Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own. There was no info dumping, nor was it written vaguely. The adventure was such a fun time too. I adored every minute of it! The main characters where especially likeable. Tal was so nice and genuine. From the start I could tell I’d love him! Athlen was also very wholesome. At first, I wasn’t particularly fond of him. However, as the story progressed, I found myself absolutely adoring his character! Moreover, the side characters where one of the best parts of the book! I love how each and every one of Tal’s siblings had their own distinct personalities. Kest was courageous and kind, much like Tal. On the other hand, Garret was spontaneous and outgoing. His sisters where also strong and resilient. Adding on to that, I really loved how In Deeper Waters contains such powerful women. From Tal’s bodyguard, to a fiery sea captain, women can do it all! In addition, the dialogue was very heartwarming. I enjoyed reading Tal’s conversations with his siblings. They each had a special way of interacting, and it was just too cute! Athlen and Tal’s conversations where at times mysterious, and this only made me want to read more. However, the dialogue between all the characters where mostly joyous or emotional. At first I couldn’t resonate much with the writing style. Third person writing is not my thing, but In Deeper Waters has changed my perspective on it. The writing was eccentric and fresh. It always had me at the edge of my seat! Furthermore, the talk about classism intrigued me quite a bit. It’s not something I see discussed much in historical fiction, so I’m glad it was mentioned. The overall enjoyment level of In Deeper Waters is very high. It took a little while for me to be fully engrossed in the story, but once I got into it, the book was immensely enjoyable! All in all, this novel is an exceptionally refreshing read that’s perfect for spring! It’s the epic high fantasy you’ve been waiting for! ---Overall--- Age Rating: 15 and up TW: Torture, violence, death Final Rating: 9.5/10 or 4.75 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We set sails on a coming-of-age journey of a young prince named Tal. As the fourth child of five, his worries do not involve inheriting the throne or being the commander of the navy, or even becoming a scholar. What he may become is more terrifying than imagine. He has awakened forbidden magic that was once used to inflict pain on many people, and which continues to frighten all those around him. Spending most of his life hidden within the walls of the palace, practicing to conceal his powers from others, this journey is the scariest yet stimulating thing he has ever experienced. . until he realized he gets seasick and rather be done with it. Few days in, we stumbled across an abandoned ship where a mysterious wanderer name Atlen was left shackled and imprisoned. Sparks are flying, hearts are thumping, an intense connection is being made. Yet Atlen decides he rather jump overboard, which starts their cat and mouse chase as they flee from pirates, try to cease a war, all in the hope of saving Tal's family and the kingdom. Characters -`ˏ 9/10 ˎ´˗ I just wanted to hug Tal throughout the whole book and just whisper to him that everything’s going to be okay, don’t let your fears be your weakness, we’re all here for you sweetie. He's afraid everyone will fear him, he doesn't want to be labeled a monster for something he can't control. He is in a constant battle with himself, he does not want to harm others and wants people to believe he would not do that as well. In the eyes of others, he’s nothing more than a weapon for war and power. Atlen, a man with many secrets. Can’t really say much about him without being spoilers, but I can tell you he is absolutely adorable! My only regret is that there was a missed opportunity to dig deeper into his background, although he’s a love interest we don't really concentrate on him. Atmosphere -`ˏ 7/10 ˎ´˗ It’s such a sweet and fluffy story, just ignore how blood was being spilled every few pages. There is not much world-building as we spend most of the story on ships in the midst of vast seas. We focus on how Tal interacts with others while trying to understand his position in the world and how to manage his powers and emotions before it gets the better of him. Trigger warnings: Anxiety, vomiting. kidnapping, physical assault, blood, and death (mention). Language -`ˏ 8/10 ˎ´˗ This is not insta-love and the pacing was done well. Meanwhile, I think some things were highly suggested so that when the great reveal came it wasn’t as shocking. However, I wasn't expecting the ending and I like the thought that you know what's going to happen but then get surprised when you’re absolutely wrong. Enjoyment -`ˏ 10/10 ˎ´˗ “It’ll be like a scene from my favorite novel. Expect you’re both soaking wet and cover in blood.” This quote may be completely misunderstood with no content but I 100% agree with you Isa (Tal’s sister). What I adored the most is how supportive Tal’s whole family is, his brothers teasing him, his sisters welcoming whoever he brings home, his mother wanting him to be with the person he loves as long as they love him back. It's unusual to see a royal family so beautiful that you love them all. It was a great read. e-Arc provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. -`ˏ Thank You ˎ´˗

I was immediately pulled in by the story and the world. At first I was a little sad that there is so little world building, but for a YA fantasy it’s just enough to understand what is going on in the kingdom and to keep the story going. A super fast read, gripping, cute and funny fairytale kind of fantasy book that I would absolutely recommend reading! Will there be a sequel? I would 100% read it.

But more than that I really loved the side characters and the siblings' dynamics. There are 5 siblings with Tal being the second youngest. It’s the perfect playful banter and the teasing and competitiveness of the siblings. Usually, there are 2 siblings and always seem to be at each other's throat, and it could be that but a lot of times it’s more chilled and I think this book gets it. Also, their mom raised all these five children alone all while ruling a kingdom successfully. She’s killing the queen game. This is all characters driven, and Tal while was a pretty great character he was also a really flawed character. Yes, he’s caring and bright but he also second guesses himself and his power and there is a lot of character growth over the book. Still, he’s not perfect and super powerful and in control of everything at the end, and that there is still a lot of space for growth. And it’s a really great ending. The writing is really simple, not over the top flowery while still being consistent throughout the book. I would have loved more explanation of magic but it was also explained really well for a standalone. It could have been longer and I probably still would have finished it in a single reading. This was such an anticipated read and I'm so glad I got a chance to read it and review it. Thank you to Edelweiss, the author, and the publisher, Margaret K. That's just rude. Don't do that! Tal is sixteen, a prince and he has magic. Cool, right? Wrong! He's the descendant of the mage who destroyed everything and gave magic a bad reputation, so Tal had to hide inside the castle and never be seen. But now he's old enough for his coming-of-age tour and oh boy will it be eventful! Attempted murder, kidnapping, a not-so-meet-cute with a fascinating redhead boy, and a conspiracy he didn't see coming! And neither did I! Athlen, baby squishy bean cinnamon roll, baby! Yes, he's the most adorable barefooted boy ever, even more than hobbits, okay? More! He is funny, doesn't care about royal etiquette, he just is and lives his life the way he wants and doesn't know the difference of value between a pearl and glass. He gets saved by Tal from bad guys, and in some way their fates get entangled together. I loved their interactions, the little touches, the stares, the blushed, the smiles, everything. I loved everything. Was I given only fluff? Well, of course not! There's mystery surrounding this sweet boy and we know the mysteries aren't always fun to read! Queue to tears! My poor heart! Tal and Athlen embarks on an adventure, a quest, to save the kingdom from certain war, and this journey will see them growing closer and fonder of each other. The sweetest thing ever, let me tell you! Grinning and crying, those were my constant states while reading this book. I finished it super fast without even noticing it. I just couldn't stop reading! So yes, let me repeat myself, there hasn't been one book by F.T. Lukens that I haven't loved and I definitely need MORE! Thank you!

Beyond the false claims of pirates, my issue was the writing. It is very very simple. It reads quite young, but some of the cursing, and kissing, and age of the characters make it clear it's YA. The dialogue lacked any real personality. And as much as I want to be a person that can ignore the actual writing of a book and just enjoy the story I am not and will never be that type of reader. It's a very short book. And being a stand-alone it became very obvious that when anything happened it would be wrapped up and fixed in a few pages. So like I mentioned just a fast no stake read. Really a prince finding his voice. Finding a boy who's different and just as soft as himself. And helping to save his family and kingdom. It was fun and fine. Enjoyable enough.
