What little money he had ran out in Lincoln where he hired on as a ranch hand. Seven years later, Alva receives word that his mom had died. Time to go home and pay his respects at her grave. He finds his father on his death bed and finally learns that his cousin Leda had lied about him attacking her. It was a lie that spread throughout the entire town. This is how we are introduced to a new character in this continuing saga. If you have been reading the series, you know Black Horse. He and his gang arrived in Margret several years before and had paid off Sheriff Oleson. Now that he has heard Alva's story, he is certain that Leda and her no account husband, Harmon, were being paid off too. Elam Eskers had tracked Black Horse to Margret. Leda is smart and ruthless, but is she capable of murder? Can Sheriff Oleson help Alva without the town know about his past misdeeds? Vernie Sieckes is in town to buy a mine, and the town too. Leda and Harmon control part of the mine. Jordan and Gaines control the rest of it and do all of the work. Sieckes doesn't enjoy killing, like Black Horse did, but will do what it takes to get what he wants. He is sadistic as Leda is ruthless. There is no way the town isn't going to find out about Sheriff Oleson and there is no way the town isn't going to find out about Leda's lie. The sheriff wants to make whatever amends he can, so he and Alva team up to save Jordan and Gaines and the town. In keeping with the rest of the series, this is an excellent story with no profanity.

Very sad betrayal. When you can't trust family, who can you trust? Very sad story, bitter, but ends well. A little slow at times but written well. Recommended for adult and teenage readers.
