I've been waiting for the final book in the Isles of Storm and Sorrow series for a year, and after the extreme cliffhanger at the end of Book Two I couldn't wait to get started! This review is also available on my blog, Unsupervised in a Bookstore . I've been waiting for the final book in the Isles of Storm and Sorrow series for a year, and after the extreme cliffhanger at the end of Book Two I couldn't wait to get started! Viper (Book One) sets up Marianne's story and introduces us to the politics and magic of the Eastern Isles. Venom (Book Two) explores the consequences of Marianne's actions, and sends her into danger as she travels across the Western Isles. In Vulture, familiar characters from East and West are brought together as Marianne seeks to protect the Twelve Isles from a dark magical threat. It's a breathtaking story. The action is non-stop as Marianne discovers the limits of her abilities, and the temptations of the magic she has learned on her journeys. This isn't a black-and-white finale to the series, but an exploration of power, and how too much power brings temptation, corruption, and destruction. The first-person narration gives the reader a clear insight into the battle Marianne must fight within herself to control her hard-won abilities. It is refreshing and exhilerating to follow her story as she is repeatedly tempted towards revenge instead of justice. It is wonderful to see how much she has grown throughout the series, and how the strength she discovered in Viper has developed into the ability to change the world. How she uses that ability, and the changes she chooses to make, are always in question, keeping the reader and the supporting characters constantly on edge, right until the final pages. It is wonderful to see characters from the previous books coming together to save the Twelve Isles and support Marianne - although some characters are more welcome than others. The author doesn't give anyone an easy ride - there are twists, shocks, and surprises that test the strongest of Marianne's companions, and tempt her to lose control of herself and her abilities. As in the previous books, no characters are safe from pain and tragedy, and everyone faces mortal danger. Be prepared for heartbreak - Bex Hogan doesn't take prisoners! This is an exciting, exhilarating, and thoughtful conclusion to the series, which highlights the strong relationships between the wide cast of characters, and gives Marianne the chance to grow and find her place in the world of the Twelve Isles. If you haven't read the series yet, what are you waiting for?

Wow this book was such a rollercoaster ride of emotions! I am so grateful to have been able to read an eARC because I honestly thought the ending of the second book might have given me a heart attack 🤣 I am happy to say that my guess was right and the ending of book 2 was a plan concocted between Bronn and Marianne - win for me. I really hadn’t considered though the fall out from this and the impact it had on Bronn; I can’t even begin to imagine all the feelings and thoughts that crossed his mind before and after and I’m really glad this was explored. Getting to see his anger but also Marianne’s and how they came together to heal! Top notch writing for me. I loved Marianne throughout this book and I’m so glad we get to see her in all states of emotion - she’s not just a cold hearted killer, she’s a young woman who has been betrayed and tortured and we see the ramifications of that in this book through her desire for revenge but also her trauma. I felt it was such an important story to play out and I’m glad there was such focus on this! One moment in this book absolutely killed me and that was the death of Ravyn; I didn’t see it coming at all and the impact it had on me really shocked me - I honestly cried 😭 one thing this book does really well is show the perils of war: so many of our characters we’ve come to know in the books are killed off. This is honestly a breathe of fresh air compared to books that kill off no characters or less important ones. There was one twist in this book that I’d sort of seen coming; when there is mention of a traitor I had two theories - 1, that it was a fake Toby created by Gaius or 2, that it was Jax. There was something about his character throughout this book that made me distrust him and so when the reveal happened it was both a shock and not a shock.. finding out he killed his friend though, god that was painful. I definitely feel this entire book was a satisfactory ending to the trilogy. I wish we had maybe a little more focus on Torin’s recovery but ultimately this book isn’t about him and it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of it. I really enjoyed this series as a whole and felt that the writing just got stronger as it went on, I can't wait to see how Bex grows as an author. I am also very excited to get a physical copy of this book for my collection because the covers are just stunning! Out 8th April for you to make your own decision!

4.25! So, what to say about this beautiful Pirates trilogy? I'm in love with pirates since I was a little girl, and this is one of the most refreshing story about them that I've ever read. These books are not perfect (is there a perfect book out there in general tho?), but it was so well done, expecially considering this is the first try for the author! Bex Hogan really got it right, fellas. Let's start with the things I liked the less about all three of these books: the rush! So many things happens so fast, I wasn't really able to begin to digest them, but in the end I've gotta say that helped with the pacing, 'cause I wasn't able to put any of these books down. I was completely captured by it. The thing I enjoyed the most is the worldbuilding. It's so magical and full of adventures! Sea monsters, land monsters, these very particular Isles, I was in a constant state of awe, like all the time. The characters are very sweet, it is impossible not to fall in love with the crew and friends of our main protagonist Marianne (and she is a very well done character too). Mostly I really liked the villains! I can't give any names 'cause it would be a spoiler, but three of them were deeply wicked, and I liked having a villain that is not motivated by silly things like "I'm in love with you but you refused me so I'm gonna burn the entire world" for a change (please stop doing this character). In the end, these books give a very similar vibe as Pirates of Caribbean, but more multifaceted for there are scenes that are really hard to read, very crude and grim. Let's just put it this way: these books stand right in between Pirates of Caribbean and Black Sails, the first for the dialogues and for the action, the quests and the funny side of it, the second for the scenes where the villains are on stage! I cried a little bit during this last book, and I'm very glad I read this trilogy. I really hope they will translate it in my main language (Italian, Mondadori se stai leggendo te prego traduci) 'cause I want all my friends to read them!

After the gut-punch ending of VENOM, a year was a long time to wait for VULTURE - which is why I buddy read this book in a day. It's a hard book to put down as this is the final showdown, and Bex has shown, since rather early on in the first book, that she is not afraid to make you like a character only to brutally murder them. The body count for this book is impressive. Impressive, and terrifying. I am always pleased, on a writing and story level, when an author has the guts to kill off so many characters, to not pull any punches with who gets hurt and how - and how finally. On an emotional reader level, my heart wants to protest and demand medical attention! A decent death toll makes a big battle feel realistic (in so far as a big battle with magic can!) If there's no real cost, and everyone gets through a battle unscathed, then it undercuts the tension and doesn't pay off the stakes established. And this series establishes that there is a cost to everything. VULTURE is not a book that falls into that disappointing category as no one is safe. There are a lot of battles, but they're spread across a variety of locations and circumstances to differentiate them so they don't get repetitive. Particularly loved the Pirates of the Caribbean-esque battle - it's a sequence that works so well visually as well as emotionally. A lot happens in the book (that blurb barely covers the first act!) but the villain is GOOD. I like a nice big bad, who's mostly just evil without lots of time spent setting up a sob story. There's just something so fun and satisfying about good versus evil, and the hero(ine) having to decide where the line is that divides them from the baddie. And whether it's worth stepping over that line for the greater good. A trilogy I am sad to see end, though it was absolutely the ending the series deserved. Now to eagerly await whatever Bex writes next!

I had absolutely no idea on the direction this story would go after the astounding ending of Venom and truly the first part of the book is so dark I was so scared for Marianne but I really enjoyed the difference in her narrative voice, she is not the same girl left to die on the beach and its incredibly well written almost like old Marianne is having an out of body experience watching the carnage unfurl below her, Bex Hogan has a truly terrifying imagination at times. This doesn’t mean that Marianne has an easy time of it though, far from it, her enemy knows her too well and even I had no idea who to trust, as she became more reflective and more resolved as so many catastrophes struck – be prepared to shed more than a few tears. As each part of the story unfurls we see a new and different Marianne each time and this is what made the book so exceptional, her character grows more in this one story than most characters do across a whole series, her support network more important than ever and every friend she has made across earlier books helps bring her together to be what she must become. The finale can only be described as epic, breathtaking in its scale and impossible to stop reading, I loved every second of it. Had I had the chance, Vulture could have been a book I would have read in one go, I honestly did not want to put it down because I knew that the end of my time with these characters was coming. All I can say is bravo, Bex Hogan, an amazing ending to a fantastic series!
