This was a really solid slice of Miles Morales Spidey. In this volume, Miles has a final(?) showdown with his evil counterpart, Ultimatum, with a little help from his uncle Aaron (the new Prowler), Bombshell, Starling and Captain flippin' America. There was more than enough action, some real intrigue, some nice character moments and a bittersweet ending. What more could you want? Oh, the artwork was really good, too. Everything old is new again as Miles' past in the Ultimate Universe comes back to haunt him. With the threat of Ultimatum on his tail and his uncle Aaron still on the outs with the law, plus a new baby sister to deal with, what's a Spider-Man to do? I hated Spider-Men II. That's no secret. It went nowhere, had no payoff to anything we'd been teased, and took bloody ages to come out. So when Ultimatum's identity was revealed, I had VERY low hopes. But Saladin Ahmed manages to use a horrible story Everything old is new again as Miles' past in the Ultimate Universe comes back to haunt him. It went nowhere, had no payoff to anything we'd been teased, and took bloody ages to come out. So when Ultimatum's identity was revealed, I had VERY low hopes. But Saladin Ahmed manages to use a horrible story to tell a really good one, as Miles finds the world stacked against him once again. Some of these beats we've seen before - there's only so much of Aaron Davis as an evil/good uncle that we can mine before the well runs dry, but Ahmed manages to find one last smidge of good story to tell with him. The early half of this book also deals with the Outlawed crossover banner, as teen heroes find themselves on the wrong side of the law. It's nice to see that the supporting cast around Miles is strong enough to hold up almost half the story in these issues, and the ultimate conclusion of it all feels very much in line with past storylines like Civil War where heroes have ended up fighting the people they're supposed to protect. The artwork here is a pretty much even split between Carmen Carnero, fresh off her run on Captain Marvel, and Marcelo Ferreira, now freed from Morbius after its abrupt ending. The loss of Javier Garron is felt, but these two step up ably to fill his shoes while he goes on to other things. This is a good looking book, for sure. The word 'Ultimatum' will send shivers down even the most hardcore Ultimate Universe fan's spine, but this book goes a long way to redeeming that, with a great story full of heart and soul that shows once more who Miles is at his core, and why everyone around him trusts him as they should.

I think one of the reasons while Miles Morales is so popular (other than being a wonderful example of diversity in a character) is that he feels very much like "one of us". Miles handles things phenomenally, but also seems to be more human or down-to-earth than many other superheroes. While this Volume seemed pretty straightforward, I think it will have ramifications for the future of the character. Highlights: - Miles takes his new baby sister with him out on the town. But when Spidey needs to help, she gets webbed to the front of him. (This was funny and adorable! - CRADLE, or Child Hero Reconnaissance and Disruption Law Enforcement, has become a thing recently (affecting The Champions, Ms Marvel... lots of young Marvel heroes) and Dum Dum Dugan has been sent by them to round up Miles. Of course, he is able to escape, but the insanity continues... - CRADLE agents have begun to require all students to sign a pledge that they are not a teen hero, which is very wrong and causes a majority of the students at a basketball to stage a sit in. They do get taken off to jail, but are let out when Captain America gets involved. - Miles has a new issue with Ultimatum, and their rivalry finally comes to a head here. Ultimatum knows that Miles and his family and uncle are from another universe (Marvel Ultimate, if you forgot) because he is the 616 Miles Morales! Getting clones of Miles, and a Goblin serum army in place, Ultimatum wants to take over. Standing in his way is Miles and friends (including The Prowler, Miles' Uncle Aaron) - In the ultimate sacrifice, Uncle Aaron, overloads his suit to destroy Ultimatum, the Miles clones and the portal back to the Ultimate Universe. Miles is very heavily in mourning and doesn't know if he can continue as a hero.... A really good Volume. Can't wait to see how this affects the future of the hero. AND what will be Miles' place in the upcoming King in Black story? Strong recommend.

This deals with a new villain, Ultimatum, is taking over Brooklyn with the aid of the Green Goblin. I'm sure that someone familiar with the old Ultimate universe would have figured out the identity of the character prior to it being revealed. This collection also has the birth of Miles' baby sister, Billie Mariana, who actually ends up going on an adventure with her older brother early on. We see more of Miles' uncle Aaron, The Prowler who is turning back to his darker ways, while trying to maintain his relationship with Miles. We also discover how some of the issues at school Miles is having may have become resolved, if only temporarily. The last couple of issues collected here are a lot of action and guest stars, but overall the book maintains the sense of family and friendship we've come to expect from Ahmed. Plus, as someone who lived and worked in Brooklyn & Queens for close to twenty years it's always fun to see where the action is taking place.

The first 4 issues of this volume were very very strong, with Miles getting some interesting challenges and also featuring some of the side characters in different situations. Unfortunately it ended with 2 issues that were essentially the chaos climaxes seen in the Marvel films, where there's just endless action, way too many villains and superheroes, and not so much plot. Saladin does manage to turn it back to its emotional center with a surprising and sudden ending to the arc though, and ultimately this continues to be one of Marvel's best current series.

Ahmed writes a great Miles. And his entire supporting cast, for that matter. And in this volume, he manages to bring a kind of silly plot line to end in a surprisingly satisfying way, while leaving an opening for Ultimatum and, more importantly, Prowler to show up again in some way. But I think most impressed with how Ahmed let the Outlawed thing make an important showing in this book without having it take over the story he wanted to tell.

This Miles Morales series by Ahmed does was Marvel was originally known for, showing the human side of being a superhero! Miles is adjusting to having a new baby sister, but Ultimatum has other plans (which involve sending Miles to another reality in the multiverse). When the Prowler (Miles' uncle Aaron) pulls a job for Ultimatum, he and Miles are soon battling an army of citizens transformed into green goblins, and Miles' parents and sister are also in danger - until Captain America shows up. Another great Miles Morales story. The reveal and then show down with Ultimatum was a classic fight, and contained a nice team up with returning characters Starling, Bombshell, Prowler, his dad and Captain American. Prowler aka Uncle Aaron always has nice and powerful moments with Miles and this stayed true for this volume.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I am really enjoying the conflicted but overall positive relationship miles has with uncle Aaron. It also had some very good crossovers. The ultimatum villain is very interesting and I doubt its the last we will see of him.

My reward for getting 400 pages into Infinite Jest. Since reading the last volume of Miles Morales I’ve gone back a reread the entirety of Bendis’ Miles Morales story, a good chunk of which for the first time, so I think I may have lost the beat on some of the goings-on immediately preceding this volume. With that in mind there were some really great Spider-Man moments and some really great Morales family moments here.
