   This is another anthology I really enjoyed. I have so many favourites; but the one I personally connected with, and connected more profoundly with, was the nonfiction essay "Franco, My Father and I." Ochieng's relationship with music, and particularly, with a specific artist and how this bonded her with her father, was so profoundly outlined. I could relate; I think there's a generation of Southern Africans who also struggled to communicate with what one might call traditional fathers. We didn't This is another anthology I really enjoyed. I could relate; I think there's a generation of Southern Africans who also struggled to communicate with what one might call traditional fathers. We didn't know how to talk to each other without the conversations descending into awkwardness; so we used music, we used specific artists, most of us used Oliver Mtukudzi. He belonged to a certain generation and so they naturally loved him because he sang about their struggles and histories they collectively remembered. When some of us were still growing up we didn't quite understand him because we felt that music was meant to be something else, something popular in a western sort of way. But we grew up and the sound of Mtukudzi became the sound of home, of our fathers' unspoken love for us. This books is filled with so many beautiful moments. I love it.
