   First part of the Love Alarm Webtoon and I can say that it is not bad. The art is not my cup of tea, but it works somehow with the story. The way that the latter is presented is pretty interesting, as we change povs and we can see the story from many perspectives. The main story is intriguing and unique too.

   Since all the novels in the Love Alarm series are actually portions of one longer Daum webcomic, I'm planning on just posting this one review and linking back to it from every other book in the series. This series is written and illustrated by Chon Kye-young, a manhwa author with about five series under her belt. Several of them have been turned into television adaptations. This series is written and illustrated by Chon Kye-young, a manhwa author with about five series under her belt. Several of them have been turned into television adaptations. Love Alarm is a lovely yet mournful graphic novel (based on a Daum webtoon by Chon Kye-young) about a phone app that alerts people if someone nearby likes you or not. It ties into modern Korean society’s emphasis on looks and “likes”. The heroine, Kim Jo Jo is a high school student who, while cute and smart, is living quite unhappily with her relatives after the death of her parents. They treat her poorly and seem to blame her for her parents death and their own financial difficulties. This is a long running theme in the novel series and one that is very hard to stomach. I’m not spoiling anything to write that Kim Jo Jo did nothing to deserve this blame and, in fact, should be praised for living through such a traumatic event. Her plans for the future including nothing but work and study so that she can get out of her aunt’s home. She is a very quiet person. During her high school years, a cellphone app, the Joalarm, is created. It’s designed to let users know anonymously if someone nearby likes you . The app also shows how many people like you, but the app doesn't reveal specific details. While teens and adults alike flock to the app in the beginning days, eventually a darker tone creeps into the storyline with bullying and even deaths attributed to how the love alarm interrupts normal human relationships. Like most high schoolers, Kim Jo Jo is affected by finding out who really likes her versus those who are just pretending to like her. The alarm and the affection it exposes link her to two fellow students - Hwang Sun Oh and Lee Hye Yeong – and their not-so-friendly game of one-up-man-ship. The men have a long, interlocking friendship despite their social differences (Hwang is the son of a wealthy family but not loved by his parents while Lee is the beloved son of a single mother employed the Hwang family) which explodes once Kim enters their orbit. Much of the series angles around what is the meaning of friendship versus romantic love and is it possible to artificially create love using the app. Book One contains the plot seeds that mature during all thirteen books in the series. All the books are fairly short as they are re-formatted version of the original Daum webcomic which ran for many weeks. The illustrations are lovely and the storyline (while based in high school and college) is universal. How do you know who loves you? How do you know who you love? There is some fairly graphic bullying and lookism (discrimination toward people who are considered physically unattractive) that may give you pause but the underlying story is very touching.
