I would say that if you're looking for a competently written book with mild, consensual DD where the man isn't domineering and the woman isn't a doormat, then you'll probably enjoy this one. I had three problems with this; the first is really personal taste: 1) Damien's "job" as a professional disciplinarian: I'm sorry, but this was just too creepy for me and, because spanking is always so sexualized in these books, I sort of felt like he was cheating on Maria. I had three problems with this; the first is really personal taste: 1) Damien's "job" as a professional disciplinarian: I'm sorry, but this was just too creepy for me and, because spanking is always so sexualized in these books, I sort of felt like he was cheating on Maria. Authors: you really can't have it both ways. You can't pick and choose when spanking is kink and when it isn't -- at least not for me; I simply find it too jarring. 2) The at times unrealistic depiction of DD: The author has a blog in which she self-identifies as someone in a DD marriage. Now, she's not the only author to do so and she's also not the only author to portray DD as unsafe in her fictional books despite presenting herself as an expert on the subject in her factual blog. It may be unfair to judge a fantasy book by real-life DD standards, but I feel justified in doing so in this case since the book has a real-life setting (therefore, a certain amount of credibility is expected even within the limitations of short fiction), and since it suggests that this is a healthy DD relationship. My problem is this statement from Damien: I’m not going to sugar coat it, it’s going to hurt way more than the spanking I gave you before. You will have to trust me that I know how far to take you. I know how much you can endure. I will bring you further than you think you can go but you will make it and you will be okay. Really, Damien knows "how much she can endure" after knowing her for what, only a few days? There is absolutely no way that he could predict how she would react to real pain and helplessness -- not physically, not mentally, and not emotionally. And neither does she: he could very well trigger something truly traumatic for her (particularly given what we know about her mental state). And his supposed ability to read her mind is what Maria wants to risk her safety on? There's not even a discussion of safe words (authors: the one-sentence "your safe word is 'rutabaga'" really won't slow down the pace of your novel). How would he know, for example, if she were crying from the spanking or, say, a pain in her abdomen, if she has no way to communicate that? And before anyone says that DD doesn't have safe words: if you're in a DD relationship with an H who doesn't allow you to have a safe word, you aren't practicing safe, sane, consensual DD. And neither is Damien, who, as an "expert," should know better. 3) The use of DD as a (view spoiler)[cure-all for a psychological disorder (particularly when it's presented as the only treatment). Again, since Damien is billed as a "licensed, clinical therapist," it was really hard to suspend disbelief here. The fact that Ms. Lynne presented it seriously as a way to heal someone from this disease, well... For those who want more information about just how problematic Damien's "treatment" is, you may be interested in this book: Starving for Attention: A Young Woman's Struggle with and Triumph Over Anorexia Nervosa (hide spoiler)] . I really, really appreciated that Damien did NOT pursue a relationship with Maria until she was no longer his client. And I did like the ending: so many of these books veer into the saccharine and this did not: I really thought it would go one way and instead, thankfully, went another. I have to be honest and say that this book wasn't for me. I think, however, that those not bothered by what I mention above will enjoy it.

I loved the chemistry between the two main characters, Maria Spallone and Damien Price. What starts as a client in need of help and a licensed clinical therapist and disciplinarian, will take a quick turn as he can no longer offer her therapy, but wants to get instead to know her. Maria Spallone is smart, beautiful, and has career goals, knowing she wants to work with children who have special needs. She also has an ugly secret, she binge eats and then purges. She must be good at it because she has managed to hide it from her mother. The higher her stress level becomes, like waiting to hear about a new job—the more she frets and the cycle of binging and purging happens. She knows it is dangerous, and seeing an ad in the newspaper starts the wheels in motion. “Are you struggling with a personal goal or commitment? Do you have matters that need a listening ear and a firm hand? Damien Price can help! Damien Price is a licensed, clinical therapist and Spankologist specializing in the art of spank therapy for motivational and accountability training. He also specializes in stress relief spankings. Call Holistic Enterprises today and set up a free consultation.” The story will involve Maria, knowing she needs help and the thought of a spanking plays on her mind for days before she makes the call and sets up a consultation. Damien seems to calm her, and she will set up an appointment for a therapy session, and while she shares part of her stress issues, she isn’t completely honest with him. But what happens during her second visit? Is this the end of her therapy—and can she find more with Damien? The story is open, honest, and painful to read as Maria’s world unfolds, the abandonment issues caused by her father, a boyfriend, and a recent employer. Self-worth, body imagining and keeping secrets that are harmful. Damien is a calming effect, one who lets her know he is there for her, but she must trust him completely, be honest and share what is going on, and accept his help. He never pushes, lays out the groundwork, and carries out what has been discussed when rules are broken. “You are beautiful, Maria, just as I told you. I just helped you experience it.” The story has several discipline scenes, mild sex scenes, and a deep emotional bond between two people. As a therapist, Damien does not cross the line, knowing there are a connection and chemistry between him and Maria and stops things immediately from a professional standpoint but offers her the option of ‘getting to know each other privately.’ It will be a breakthrough for then as new issues come to light. The story also has mild age play talk where Maria calls him Daddy, and he gives her that support she has been missing since she was a little girl. I love the communication, the honesty in their conversations, and his support and guidance. “I’d like to see your words and raise you a future.”

Maria goes home and feeling sorrow for herself, because she had no one to love her. She had a boyfriend at one time Ralph but he stayed with her until he used her up. She gave him money for to take care of some trouble he was in and he ended up dumping her. She felt like every man that she felt close to left her and she thought it was because she was over weight. She sees this ad in the paper for this therapist who practiced spankologist for anxiety and other disorders, his name Damien Price. Damien and Maria finally have a consultation over the phone to see if this type of therapy would help her and she decides to give it a try. This story is a story of how Damien Price aids in the healing of Maria and in doing so finds himself a girlfriend/partner. You have to read this story. It was interesting and it was a easy read. It actually was a different type of romance story. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

She recently graduated college with a specialization in Early Childhood Education and goes on her first job interview for a position at a school. She is at a bit of a crossroads in her life as she does not have a job, not boyfriend or partner and still lives with her mother, who is a wonderful character in her own right. Maria feels bad about herself and hates parts of her body which she thinks have kept a man from loving her fully, from her father to any boyfriend or potential partner. Maria decides to go to a therapist who specializes in "spankology". It is supposed to help with anxiety and other things. The therapist is Damien Price and he tries to help her overcome her mind and emotions to allow love and good things into her life with an open heart. I thought the book was well written and had a good story-line and well developed characters. The author dealt with several subjects that could be triggers for people but she wrote about them in a mature and authentic way without exploiting them. In the end this was an emotion reading experience but well worth it. I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

I always struggle when I read stories that contain eating disorders. It’s a touchy subject and has the potential to be triggering for some. I love the image of that strong protector that will stand beside us and support us, assist us as we slay these dragons that are slowly destroying us. Yeah, there are definitely parts of Maria’s story I can strongly relate to. Damien isn’t fully believable to me. There’re just too many things about him and his actions that don’t add up quite right. But Maria? She’s living breathing flesh and bone to me. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book through Booksprout.

I liked Ms. Lynne’s first book in this series and was eager to read more. This is a standalone, so no need to have read the first book (although it was good as well). This story starts in an intriguing way... what are Maria’s issues? And we hear her mom’s point of view as well. I actually thought the book might go in a slightly different direction than it did based on our view into Maria’s initial musings. I was torn in this book between thinking Damien was awesome and hoping Maria would grow up a bit. That said, I have to say that the portrayal of Maria’s eating disorder and her panic about life in general is so well written that it’s almost tangible. I also loved how Damien wrestled with his attraction to Maria despite being her therapist. Those aspects kicked it from 3 to 4 stars for me because I didn’t feel there was a real story. So – great H, great psychological aspects got my vote. I receive I was torn in this book between thinking Damien was awesome and hoping Maria would grow up a bit. This is my first time reading anything by this author. I thought the plot was interesting and it dealt with a number of different issues that Maria experiences making her down to earth and quite normal. What isn’t as normal is how she goes about dealing with her anxiety, but it works for her. It’s an interesting romance story and I’ll be looking out for more works by this author in the future.
