Finished second read through today (writing a more extended review for a magazine atm). Just wanna reaffirm my love for Albert’s work. It’s not easy stuff on the heart but I am left with greater appreciation for the companionship of others and the feel of wind on my body, so that’s art, no? my first encounter will Albert's comics. This one collects several short work she's made, and they are horrific, devastating, and sooo sooo tender. Finished second read through today (writing a more extended review for a magazine atm). The first volume in Breakdown's new "Library of Contemporary Comics" series collecting short-run work from contemporary artists - I can't wait for more from this series. Lala is someone I had come across a few times in anthologies or online, though she had never bowled me over. I meant to pick up a copy of Janus but it sold out. I meant to buy a copy of Wet Earth but I never got around to it. Now this thick volume collects them and more. I meant to buy a copy of Wet Earth but I never got around to it. Now this thick volume collects them and more. As I made my way through I felt myself getting drawn deeper into Lala's world. Her particular brand of sci-fi is realist, softly dystopian, edging toward satire without trying to be funny. The characters are horny and alienated. Dreaming of a softer world, when things had flesh and plants grew from the ground. When faces were personal and private and not everything was visible all of the time. The sequencing here is especially fantastic. Forgoing chronology for something more rhythmic, dreamlike. It mixes Lala's styles beautifully. I went from passively interested in her work to big fan from when I opened this volume to when I closed it. I can't wait for more.

#LalaAlbert's comics are like no other and i am so glad they exist. the visuals are so hard to describe so just look at the pictures. her plotlines are very interesting as well. in this collection are lots of bizarre, existential sex; women morphing into animals; and lonesome dissections of identity. i finished the whole book in just one evening and it's ok because her world are best to enter wholly than in bits. and finishing this once doesn't mean you're completely done with it. i will def go b #LalaAlbert's comics are like no other and i am so glad they exist. the visuals are so hard to describe so just look at the pictures. her plotlines are very interesting as well. in this collection are lots of bizarre, existential sex; women morphing into animals; and lonesome dissections of identity. i finished the whole book in just one evening and it's ok because her world are best to enter wholly than in bits. and finishing this once doesn't mean you're completely done with it. i will def go back to this a lot especially because there's more thought to the panels and design than meets the eye. i like how the illustrations seem so nonchalant while you can also tell it's been totally planned out. textured inks are my favorite. again im just so happy her work exists and i wish more people would check out and appreciate this.
