This collection of ahadith by Imam an-Nawai was first brought to my attention six years ago at our weekly halaqah, my teacher held aloft the forest green and gold cover and told us this was our next study. I vaguely recall analysing a select handful of these ahadith in class (In fact, I certainly remember the first few - whether we examined all forty I cannot recall, however I will interrogate my old notebooks to soon find out the extent to which my memory has failed me). I vaguely recall analysing a select handful of these ahadith in class (In fact, I certainly remember the first few - whether we examined all forty I cannot recall, however I will interrogate my old notebooks to soon find out the extent to which my memory has failed me). Half a decade later I finally got around to reading it cover to cover myself - a feat that most likely would not have been possible if not for the global lockdown this Ramadan. Imam an-Nawawi is a renowned hadith scholar and shafi’i faqih, and has been praised over the centuries for his unwavering devotion to knowledge-seeking and academia, so much so that he never married in his lifetime, conscious that his dedication to ‘ilm would disavow his wife her rights. This compilation of forty(two) ahadith intend to comprise all the essentials of the religion and shariah (islamic law). Each hadith is selected specifically for its high classification and foundation in the Islamic tradition. The ahadith mentioned in this work are primarily sourced from Sahih Muslim and Bukhari. I found this edition very useful - not only was it translated into english, it also had the original arabic preceding the text (helpful for someone studying arabic). I valued the commentary of each hadith (most hadith are straightforward in message, but further clarity is never a bad thing). The footnotes were also beneficial, particularly for contextualisation, and giving details on the narrators of each hadith (sahaba). It gave details of their life, relationship to the Prophet ﷺ and how many ahadith they narrated in their lifetime. I had no idea Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated 5,000+ ahadith. Of the ahadith that comprise this work, the ones that I particularly valued included: * The Hadith of Jibreel (Islam, Iman & Ihsan) * Istiqamah (going straight) * Easing Someone’s Distress * Be Mindful of Allah and He will be Mindful of You In addition to being easy to read and understand, the majority of ahadith in this work are also easy to memorise, and will serve as great reminders.

Amin :)

I've skimmed through this work quickly; it is the best edition in terms of translation of this work of the few I've come across in the English language. Reads well, a commendable effort all round (translation and publishing). Let’s be honest, this is a must read for every Muslim. These 40 ahadith have been chosen very carefully by Imam Nawawi rahimullah and we should all do our best to memorise them, to reflect on and apply in everyday life.

An essential read, plain and simple. AlNawawi's manual is concise yet with so much detail packed into so little. Furthermore Nuh Keller's essays at the end are essential to every muslim of this time, as we have clearly lost way with what traditional Islam is, what it entails, and more importantly what it requires of us. Hadith contained in the book are mostly the ones I’m familiar with growing up ‘muslim’ and a few that were new to me but the commentary expanded what I thought I knew of the lessons contained in these Hadith. It broadened my mind in a way that doesn’t require me to be equipped with certain qualifications so that both Students of knowledge and ordinary Muslims can takeaway a truckload of lessons from it The commentaries put into consideration the ‘context’, ‘event’ and ‘condition’ around which each Hadith came into being while backing them up with other prophetic sayings and words from the Quran. I unlearned, remembered and learned a lot of things and I cannot emphasize how important this book is on the shelf on every Muslim. Without a doubt, 5 stars and I recommend that you read it at intervals instead of ‘at once’, to allow for pondering “Having a good opinion of God is the result of worshiping Him well.”- Muhammad, God’s blessings and peace be upon him.

I'm not a scholar of the Hadith or the Qur'an or Shari'a. I still learned a lot from this text and recommend it for others who seek deeper and greater understanding of Islam, particularly the Shafi'i school Imam Nawawi is part of. 5 stars for Nawawi's collection itself ... however While I appreciate the publishers (Ta-Ha publishers) translation, it's decent, I do not understand why they kept emphasizing so much on how people pay zakat nowadays, the entire introduction is about it, literally a small rant, it was quite strange, and throughout the book sometimes you see in the footnotes they repeat this issue. And while I greatly appreciate what they did by putting the commentaries of the ahadith by Nawawi himself from his various works on hadith literature (as far as I know, he never directly made a direct commentary of his collection), this also resulted in kind of a disorganized book, because at times the commentary can be detailed and sometimes its not at all. There's better published editions of this work out there.

That is the best commentary that has ever been written on the 40 hadiths of Nawawi. Zarabozo has done a great effort in gathering almost all related traditions and Qur'anic verses to every hadith, and interconnected them to produce the most complete picture in front of the reader, especially knowledge seekers. My only negative view for Zarabozo's approach is that he inclines greatly towards the modern Salafists' views and neglects or degrades other views. I didn't like that. Detailed, but reads like it was written in a hurry. Sometimes a whole act of worship is whittled down to one sentence with a few of the words being completely vague. Would be much better if it were better organized. A new version is necessary. A much more organic explanation would be very helpful. Comparable to Za'd al-Ma'ad of Ibn Qayyim in approach. Nonetheless, this is one of the few Islamic books that attempts to cover a great deal of ground so its a welcomed but necessary addition to fiqh books.

What can I say? It's a great book, and very helpful especially for followers of the Shafi'i school. Worth reading straight through, including the end notes at least once. Also worth keeping close by for a quick reference if you're not looking for something super-detailed like you might find in the Reliance. What can I say?
