I will never read Emma Holly again. It was dumb. Big alpha male Egyptian prince is bartered/whored by his god-king father as trade for some soldiers from a queen whom said father hates. Tou is powerful and touched by the gods herself. She has 5 lovers a night and is never fulfilled and Memnon is able to satisfy her in ways unheard of. Then it becomes erotica, and the plot goes by the wayside, then there's some male anal lovin' then, a small battle, then victory, then more erotica. The thing is that it's not very good erotica. "a sea of semen trying to break free" eew Lora Leigh "In a Wolf's Embrace"- 4 stars. I liked this one. I wouldn't buy the book for it, but it redeemed the book. I like her Breed series and this one has a prologue that explains the whole series as if it's Book #1 rather than book #13..so helpful! A Breed assasain kills one of the scientists who tortured him but the girl he's been "using" as his "in" (who is his mate too!) witnesses it. Jonas wants her killed, Matthias takes her and keeps her for a few days so she's no longer afraid of him, then they mate and then there's a twist and then a great HEA. I really liked this story. It should have been re-titledd "Mating Heat"

From Beyond the Dark Antho... Okay, here's the thing. I'm not a big antho fan. I know what they are- nothing more than a marketing tool with a short story by one author I do like in order to get me to read a short by an unknown before the release of unknown's new book. Yet I fall for it, because, dangit, I can't resist a story by an author I love. I broke it down per story, so here goes: In a Wolf's Embrace by Lora Leigh A cabin romance, Matthias- one of LL's Wolf breeds, has known Grace as his mate from his first scent of her. But he's got a job to do, and he's not beyond using her to get it done. His plans are to move forward with his mission- to assassinate one of the top council officials who was instrumental in torturing him and many other breeds while imprisoned years back- than take off with her and take care of this mating business. Unfortunately things go awry and Grace catches him just as he shoots the creep dead. Yeah, that makes seduction difficult, but kidnapping her and then sequestering her in a secluded cabin til the mating hormones do there thing, should do the trick. And it did. I liked in a Wolf's Embrace much better than the entry in the Shifter Antho (review to follow). These short stories work best for me if they stick with the over the top sex- simply because there is no time for any real development of plot and characters. Still, it wasn't enough to make it a fav, so 3.5 out of 5 from me. Dragon Dance by Angela Knight I liked this one though the humor felt forced as well as the world AK created. Um, well the world Marvel Comics created I should say. Yeah, it's a total x-men ripoff with a spirit guide twist. (The people get the powers by alien anima/animus that live in their bodies). But I liked it enough to possibly, possibly, pick up a full length if she ever writes it. (I'm kind of up in the air about it though.) Arial Dean , a hostage negotiator for the local police, is called in when a `Hyper'- ie. Mutant to you and me- threatens his wife and children by holding them hostage. When they discover he has abilities consistent with the Hypers- the mutants in AK's world- they call in the FBI who then send in Tracker, a Hyper handler, to take out the dangerous new mutant. During the ensuing melee, Arial herself is changed into a Hyper and while on their way to a hidden complex, Tracker and Arial discover that her new power is far more than either one of them could anticipate. As I said, I liked this story. It's sexy and intriguing and made me curious about the world AK is creating- or borrowing and making her own! 4 out of 5 Queen of all She Surveys by Emma Holly This one is pure Emma Holly. EH is one of those who started out early in the erotica/romantica game. She's had the time to grow into it and she does it well. Set either in the distant future, or another world- I can't remember which- it's all about magic and shifters. Tou Is the Queen, and she needs and uses sex to handle a stable of men at her disposal. Prince Memnon is a warrior prince from another land who needs over the top sex as well, but has limited himself due to his incredible strength, which could tear apart a normal woman- if he loses control. (bit of an eyeroll there). When they come together through an arranged marriage, they find they are made for each other. Add a dash of political intrigue and you have a hot little number that worked well enough for it's short story format. 3.5 out of 5 Caught by the Tides by Diane Whiteside Yeah, this one didn't hold interest for me- and it's supposed to be the one we're hooked into. Set in 1803, it's full of Napoleonic war references and mages who control the elements for the King. You'd think it'd work for me, considering the fact I love fantasy. It didn't. DNF

Dragon Dance by Angela Knight One word: ENTERTAINING I don’t particularly like stories about super-power infected humans, but Angela Knight does it with such style and certain panache, I just can’t hold the theme choice against her. As with all things Knight the steam is up in the stratosphere, and the leather-clad hunks and that chops licking tiger sticking his head out of Tracker’s chest more than compensate for the whole aliens-did-it hoopla. Caught by the Tides by Diane Whiteside One word: DISAP Dragon Dance by Angela Knight One word: ENTERTAINING I don’t particularly like stories about super-power infected humans, but Angela Knight does it with such style and certain panache, I just can’t hold the theme choice against her. Caught by the Tides by Diane Whiteside One word: DISAPPOINTING While anthologies are a great way of discovering new authors, this is not the case with this story (and author). The magickal AU take on the Regency period and the Napoleonic threat was a major stretch, and might (big emphasis on that might!) have worked if the author decided on a little less harrypotterish approach...I love historicals (Regency being one of my favorites) and paranormals, yet this particular combination left me cold – and bored. Queen of All She Surveys by Emma Holly One word: PASSABLE While the first few chapters promised one heck of a novella (there’s just something about hunks wearing only a loincloth and a smile), the story quickly diluted into a weird May-September (the September woman looking like a May woman) quasi-relationship with a helluva lot of furniture-breaking sex including god-touched liquid and a funky appendage with a not-explained purpose...Hmmm. In a Wolf’s Embrace by Lora Leigh One word: STUNNING This was the first Lora Leigh story I've read, and my first encounter with the Breeds, and it made me crave for more. As I wrote when I started reading it, the foreword sounded pretty darn good, but the story was (thankfully) even better. I laughed and I cried, tears (not of laughter!) are a great indicator of a good book for me, my hands were freezing cold (another good sign), and by the middle of the novella I was hot all over. Can't wait for the rest (my TBR pile is soon going to get even larger). This collection gets four stars only thanks to Lora Leigh's contribution. It's the last novella of the bunch that makes it all worth it - no wonder they put it last. After the bitter aftertaste the two middle ones left, it was a relief to "rest my eyes" on the Breed story.

I'd read 2 of the authors in this anthology before, so I figured I'd enjoy at least their stories. Surprisingly, this was a fairly strong anthology, perhaps because it felt like the stories were longer than the usual short story format. It also introduced me to a new writer who's works I will have to investigate further. Now--to "grading" the individual stories: Dragon Dance by Angela Knight. This story was not set in any of the previous worlds that I'd read by her, but I have to admit--I really hope she turns it into a new series. The 2 leads were strong without being caricatures, and their interactions were interesting. Caught by the Tides by Diane Whiteside. This was 1 of the 2 authors I had read nothing by before. And she is one that I am definately going to have to investigate further. I do not know if this story is set in 1 of her published worlds or not, but it was very enjoyable. Its an alternate Earth type story, set during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The heroine and hero are English, and magic workers. VERY good story. Queen of all She Surveys by Emma Holly. Again, I had not read anything by this author before, so I had no real expectations going in. This story is set back in the bronze age, in what I believe to be Egypt before it was joined into the Upper and Lower Kingdoms. Well before any of the recorded history we have for it. It was, in my opinion, the weakest story of the set, but still an OK story. In a Wolf's Embrace by Lora Leigh. Set in her Breeds world, this was the story of Matthias and Grace, their meeting and becoming Mates. I personally prefer the full length novels, but this did answer questions about how the 2 became a couple, which I had vaguely wondered about. Not as strong as a full novel, but hey, what short story IS, right? Still, very good story for us compulsive people who want to know everything about all the characters in a series.

5 stars for one story. 2 and 3 stars for the other stories. This book contains the following four stories. 5 stars for DRAGON'S DANCE by Angela Knight. Creative, new, different, fun. Humans with special powers are called Hypers. Some are good and some are bad. I don't want to give away some of the fun surprises, so I won't tell any more of the story, other than it was well done and worth buying. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: three. For a list of my reviews of other Angela Knight books, see my 2 star review of “The Forever Kiss” posted 9/09/08. 3 stars for IN A WOLF'S EMBRACE by Lora Leigh. Some parts wild, wicked and fun. Other parts a little weak. Too much time was spent in the thoughts of Matthais, thinking and worrying about losing her and his life without her. Too much time was spent with Grace rejecting him and wanting to get away from him after seeing him shoot another man. But otherwise, it was enjoyable. Story brief: Matthais is 1/2 wolf and 1/2 human. His breed has only one mate for life. He meets Grace and knows she is his. He spends time with her. Then she sees him execute a man who had tortured others. Matthais kidnaps Grace and she eventually gives in and falls in love with him. Sexual language: erotic. Number of sex scenes: five, some several pages long. Setting: 2003 New York city and Catskill Mountains in upstate New York. Genre: erotic paranormal romance. For a listing of my reviews of other Lora Leigh books, see my review of "Tempting the Beast" posted on 6/30/08. 2 stars for CAUGHT BY THE TIDES by Diane Whiteside. Not entertaining enough. Something was missing. I wasn't emotionally invested in the characters. I was bored with the way the author described the lifestyle, schooling and lack of parenting of mages, as well as the powers of mages and magick of the land. I'm having a hard time describing what was wrong, but overall I was not entertained. Story brief: A British spy, Owen who is a mage, just returned from spying on Napoleon in France. He is injured and Emma heals him. Trevelyn is a spy for France, living in England and is also a mage. He and Owen fight. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: two. Setting: 1803 English coast. Genre: fantasy historical romance. For a list of my reviews of other Diane Whiteside books, see my 2.5 star review for The Irish Devil posted 8/31/08. 2 stars for QUEEN OF ALL SHE SURVEYS by Emma Holly. Something is missing, I'm not sure what. I kind of wanted it to be over. The plot is about having sex, not much else. The king has a large sexual appetite. His son Memnon, does as well, but he chooses one woman per month to be with. An enemy queen has a stable of harem men. She uses several of them every day to service her. Her army captures the king's army and she requests Memnon as the ransom. Memnon goes to her at his father's command. He is so good in bed, or should I say they are so good for each other, that she keeps him and no longer uses her harem of men. Sexual language: erotic. Number of sex scenes: six, some several pages long. Setting: ancient Yama civilization on earth. Genre: erotic paranormal romance.

A Hyper. Who can pass his "taint" on with a touch. Lucky for Arial that Tracker is there and can ease her through it. Lucky for Josh and Phillip that Arial has her dragon to fill in with the truth. Excellent, excellent story. Please, please, please let this be part of a series! Diane Whiteside's "Caught by the Tides" is an historical piece of magic, spies, and Napoleon. Owen Bentham is a King's Mage spying on the French when he comes into possession of a spell that could save England from a French invasion. While crossing the Channel, the ship he's on is attacked by a mage-created storm and a half-dead Owen washes ashore off the coast of Wales only to be rescued by that rarest of creatures, a chalice. Great story that was so well written that I didn't feel as though I had lost anything by its being a short story. Emma Holly's "Queen of All She Surveys", although part of the Tale of the Demon World series, is separate from the series with a strong flavor of ancient Egypt. There is nothing to connect her with the other tales. That said, wow. Well-written. As usual. Holly writes an amazingly erotic tale of a young girl who survives multiple rapes and being tossed to the desert to rise up and become a "much-loved" Queen. A queen who conquers the village that sentenced her to die and has her final revenge on the then-Prince Ravna who stood by and watched before he plunged one last time into her. When she takes the village, in revenge she requires Ravna’s son, Memnon, as her consort in exchange for the troops she captured in the battle. Lora Leigh's "In a Wolf's Embrace" has Matthias working hard to regain lost ground when his mate catches him cold-bloodedly assassinating a mean, old man. Admittedly, the man was one of the directors of the council that directed the breeding, torture, and training of the Breeds they created, but Grace sees only the unemotional destruction wrought by Matthias. In love with him and now hating him for his actions, Matthias has no choice but to regain lost ground or see her killed by his own people. Excellent story! I just loved how Grace's family embraces him and teaches him about true family…and football!

Her alien talks with her and explains things to her… And there is attraction between Josiah and Arial – and when she pets the tiger that presents itself to her, it is as if she is touching Josiah… exciting him… and she is strong and able to accommodate his heightened sexual organ and feelings… and they join Psych – rich man with two fairy aliens who allows him to read humans … and then kali finds them, and they destroy her alien. So with Arial’s talent, she can see the aliens and communicate with them… and help the Hypers to communicate with the aliens… and they are better able to understand the phenomenon. And Arial joins Josiah aka Tempest. Caught by the Tides – Diane Whiteside The time of Napolean… and here are English mages in place to defend England. Owen Bentham – mage mother who left him in the care of his father, with whom she had spent one night with… his father’s wife was not happy about him, he lived in the barn until 12 years old when he joined the army, who became his family – though he hid his magik from them… but as an adult soldier, the general’s wife seduced him and then cut up and tore his magik from him to aid in the battle (which they won spectacularly)… and he was sent to magik school – where he first learned to protect himself from anyone taking his magik again. And now, as Napoleon is readying another strike against England, using a spell name Lorilei which would allow him access to ports of England, Owen has planted in him an anti-Lorilie spell and he has traveled (not using his magik) across France undetected, and is close to home. But on the boat he is on, an English traitor magician has caused a storm that has destroyed the boat… and on Threthledan Cove, below where Mrs. Emma Sinclair lives, the waves have tossed him to shore… and Emma recognizes the light of his ring (told to her from her dead nave lieutenant husband) as a navy magician in need of help… So she rescues him, using the bits of magik she knows (to make him lighter –like a bushel of apples; and a spell to ‘puppet’ walk him) that work better than she could expect (his magik amplified her small bits)… and she notices he is eased when she is near, so she sleeps in a chair by his bed, holding his hand… and he heals quicker… when he finally awakens, he recognizes her as a chalice – one who holds magik that can be drawn from by another magician… and her neighbor, the traitor who sent the storm, has been courting her, to get voluntary access to the magik store… and her home is built over a magik current, and previous relatives have built ways to connect to it… and to best let him access to her stored magic, she agrees to have sex with him (hhmmm?) but she loves him, and then he must allow all of his defenses down to share magik to defeat the traitor… which he does, and they do… Queen of all She Surveys – emma Holly Warriors of swords… a king (Ravna) ‘endowed’ by the gods to youth and to be overly lusty, which in part he passes on to his only son – but his son Memnon (head of his guard) only indulges in one woman a month – and she is fully sated when he is done… and their neighbor to the south is ruled by Queen Tou – a woman also ‘endowed’ by the gods to youth and a lusty appetite… but when she was 15 and orphaned she was caught, and the elders punished her by each raping her – watched by then governor Ravna, who then dismissed all and also raped her… then she was taken to the desert to die – but she found refuge in an underground godess’ temple – and when she emerged she became a leader of men… and for the last 30 years she has maintained a harem of men to service her… And she captured Ravna’s men, and offers a trade for his men for his son… and Ravna agrees… so he is sent with one of Ravna’s men as his servant… and he of all men has a sex need as great as hers… in trying to put him in his place, she has sex with 5 of her harem in front of him, then gives him a blow job… then she denies them both sex for 5 days, and then invites him – and he goes… and they have tremendous ,, ongoing sex… and she has no other after him… they become friends along with lovers… and then one night, when he’s feeling a bit uneasy, her harem chief (and long time friend) brings in the traditional glass of wine to them both – but he had tasted it before bringing it to her… and after pouring, he goes into convulsions – and they realize he’s been poisoned.. and deduct it was the servant Ravna sent with Memnon – and they join together to capture the others let into her palace… and he pledges his allegiance to her to defeat his father (who tried to kill him too afterall)… ahhhh In A Wolf’s Embrace – Lora Leigh Matthias Slaughter, Wolf breed, Breed Council assassin, is slotted to kill one of the Council directors who has continued to kidnap and experiment on Breeds… and he formed an friendship and light romance with the hotel manager, Grace Anderson, to gain access to the director… and the night when she was supposed to on her way to her catskill cabin for a weeks vacation, where Matthias was to join her – he assassinates the director – but Grace sees him – he has 3 minutes to get out of the hotel with her before the cameras are reset, so he makes her unconscious and carries her down… when Jonas asks why he didn’t kill her, he responds that he’ll take care of her… Jonas knows that this is his mate… So she wakes up, restrained, heading to the cabin with Matthias… he has a week to gain her trust… the first few days are rough… she is angry, he wants so bad to mate her, but wants it to be at her agreement… he tells her why he killed the director, he tells her of the mating heat, and that he won’t kiss her until or unless she agrees to mate with him… the first night he just asks for her to allow him to touch her, to gather her warmth… so sweet… and he knows he must give up assassinations, and is ready when she asks… and she opens her arms for him, wanting him… and the mating heat consumes them… and after 2 days of sex… as she’s going to sleep, she tells him about her loving family - and he can’t conceive that they would easily accept him, and makes plans on how he’d ‘win’ them… But the next morning, coyote soldiers are approaching… he uses his watch alarm to call for Jonah’s help, and sneaks out with Ellen… but they get circled… and she gets shot… they take out a few as she fights alongside him… and Jonas arrives… they helicopter her to a hospital, and while waiting (and praying to be taken instead of her) her family arrives – and see his pain, and enfold him… and 3 months later, with a transfusion of his blood, she is mostly healed – and they are with her family – he is now a part of them… and he becomes security head at her hotel… ahhhh

Rated for the Lora Leigh 'Breeds' story - my opinion, this novella is to me the best book of the entire 'Breeds' series so far. The characters' actions and reactions are believable within the scope of the world, neither of them are TSTL, the male isn't obnoxiously alpha (a failing common in this series) and the female isn't obnoxiously stubborn (another failing common in this series). My favorite part (view spoiler)[the male character actually has a working knowledge of consent, and doesn't start the mating process until *after* he's explained what to expect with their whole freaky mating hormone stuff (hide spoiler)] this is another failure in the series to date, although forgivable for some because the Breed had no idea either. But this time it was addressed spot on and made the whole book better. Even though the novella has some of Lora Leigh's usual wording choices that make me cringe, they aren't enough to detract from how enjoyable I found this book.

I chose to read this anthology because I wanted to read Lora Leigh’s In a Wolf’s Embrace, part is her Breed series. I went ahead and read the other 3 stories so I can review them all. Dragon Dance by Angela Knight: This was the first book I read by Angela Knight, and it spurred me to read some of her other books. There was an interesting twist on how the characters achieved their paranormal powers. Very creative. Caught By the Tides by Diane Whiteside: An historical piece about European Magick workers while England and France were at odds because of the Napoleonic conflicts. Queen of All She Surveys by Emma Holly: A fantasy piece about an ancient land, with an Egyptian flavor. Highly erotic but a lovely romance. In a Wolf’s Embrace by Lora Leigh: #13 in the Breed series. A touching love story between Matthias & Grace. Grace drove me nuts at the beginning of the story but she redeemed herself in the end.

This was the only the 2nd book to show exteneded family and it was so sad when they met their daughter's man for the 1st time. Loved how he refused to kiss her until she was ready, so she would have some of her freewill and not be lead by overneed hormones as the kiss would give her. Not to mention, the compromise they made to each other for happier life together in their job choices. And, the series 2 doctors finally merge...hopefully, with their findings too. Breeds 10.5 Matthias has been using his mate as an 'in' into the hotel were she works in order to kill one of the scientists that experiment and torture Breeds. She witnesses it, so now Matt is kidnapping her to a remote cabin to try to convince her not to go to the police. If she does, she might not survive the experience. Also, she is his mate, and at this point he only wants her not to see him with repulsion. I liked it. I liked how her family accepted Matthias with open arms. Matthias being a breed never knew what it felt like being wanted or loved, but that all changed when Grace came into his life. Grace knee some of the breed world but when she witnesses Matthias assassin her boss everything changes. He kidnapped her and this starts a chain reaction and her world and Matthias will never be the same. one thing for sure is Matthias finally found his home..

I read this anthology for Lora Leigh's breed story and Angela Knight's story. I enjoyed In a Wolf's Embrace very much. Angela Knight's story was okay. The rest were kind of just there. I read them, but more out of obligation. I read this anthology for Lora Leigh's breed story and Angela Knight's story. I enjoyed In a Wolf's Embrace very much. Angela Knight's story was okay.
