Something to think about The story line was thoughtful but some of the characters lost their own unique presence even though they were described as unique style

Sometimes a Big Sword is Just a Big Sword...Not This Time Kaeden, some sort of warrior, has found himself off the beaten track in an area overgrown with Oraks (Orc). He has a few encounters with them and their Bloodwolves, before Amanda, a rogue he first meets after observing here steal into an orak encampment and lift the prized possession of the village mage, an amulet. Both of them have magic swords that manage to transmit some of the life energy of their kills back into their wielders. There is Sometimes a Big Sword is Just a Big Sword...Not This Time Kaeden, some sort of warrior, has found himself off the beaten track in an area overgrown with Oraks (Orc). He has a few encounters with them and their Bloodwolves, before Amanda, a rogue he first meets after observing here steal into an orak encampment and lift the prized possession of the village mage, an amulet. Both of them have magic swords that manage to transmit some of the life energy of their kills back into their wielders. There is a tension over whose the better fighter, etc. between Kaeden and Amanda, not unlike the classic Conan and Red Sonja. The Amulet is owned by a King, Amanda was hunting it to earn the bounty offered. Another bounty hunter uses magic to threaten Amanda and Kaeden and claims the amulet. Amanda asks Kaeden to help retrieve it, he declines, but ends up going her way anyway. More orc and blood wolf fights. Kaeden and Amanda go to the king who sent Amanda to recover the amulet, in hopes that Kaeden can vouch that Amanda recovered it and it was stollen. It turns out that the amulet thief, Tamara is in residence at the castle, and due to a technicality despite acknowledging the theft, owes nothing to Amanda. However, one of the King’s daughters has gone missing, so he dispatches all three of them to recover his daughter, or the head of the Grue that she might have been killed by. The three of them gather supplies, and head off. After getting to know each other they strike up an uneasy truce. On the way out of town they recruit some “caravan guards” who they have had two previous bad encounters with, where Kaedon showed them mercy after they acted underhandedly. His benevolence has earned their service. At the lair of the beast, they have more time to chastise the soldiers encamped there, who have been too cowardly to risk entering the lair to save the princess. Cool battle, the grue is slain. Lots of treasure. In his dying breaths, the Grue tells Kaeden he can release the women trapped in the sword back into the world by completing a quest to a far off remote frozen wizards tower. So of course he goes, and everyone else decides to come with him. Even Violet, the newly rescued princess, choses to go along. The wizard tricked Kaeden, and the tower is a trap. Instead of restoring Kaeden’s long lost love trapped in the sword, it restores the evil wizard who entrapped her there, or so he thought. Wizard escapes effortlessly in snowstorm. Kaeden and his team have to fight a bunch of yetis that were enclosed in ice in the walls of the evil wizard tower. Kaeden swears revenge. Luckily the evil wizard leads an attack on the very kingdom Violet is from, so she wants him to help defend it anyway. And the king (Violet’s dad) offers a big payout if they help fight, so Tamara can rationalize helping. New plan, to get the right person out of the sword, must slay a basilisk. Luckily there is one nearby. Kaeden has to enter a dream realm and convince the basilisk to put his soul into the sword, releasing Kaeden’s original love, Guinevere. And as a bonus, the basilisk can be used to kill the evil wizard, who has become near-omnipotent. At first Guinevere doesn’t know about being part of a harem, but is swayed in that direction. Eventually Kaeden gets all the girls, literally. Apparently his enigmatic code and confidence to the point of stupidity impresses them. Or maybe his big…sword. The very low-fantasy feel was awkwardly interrupted by the near-omnipotent evil wizard.

Kaeden a "barbarian" wanderer from the southern lands lives by a code which often makes his life more complicated and interesting than he would prefer but the code is everything. While battling Oraks and Wolf packs and others of their ilk his magic sword takes power from its victims and provides some of that to Kaeden making him a superior warrior, pretty handy in certain situations but like all magic it can be fickle. As Kaeden seeks to escape into safer territory he comes across a young woman observing an Orak camp, she infiltrates the camp to retrieve a prize and soon the both of them are fleeing rampaging Oraks and their adventures together are just beginning. The Sword by Isaac Hooke is a little different from my normal genre choice (I did read a lot of fantasy/sword and sorcery when I was younger) but his scifi work has proven entertaining and I gave this a go and was quite pleased. The novel is standard fantasy fare with warriors, wizards, kings, princess, monsters and the usual magics and you quickly come to like Kaeden although some of his attitudes don't sit too well but as is often pointed out he is a barbarian. I was pleased by some of the plot twists which occur deeper into the novel, with a good build up they hit the mark very well allowing the characters to change in subtle ways while still retaining the elements that drew you to them in the first place. My only niggle was perhaps the romance/infatuation/sex was a little over the top especially as we got into reality show levels of wanton desire but it is a little niggle so with that in mind I can still recommend the novel although for hardcore fans of the genre it may be a little light weight.

The story is great, is it just me that thinks the descriptive sex is too much? The warrior fantasy might and magic makes a great story. The premise of this book is well done.. I think the xXxX stuff borders on porn. I could see this story develop without the addition of describing intimate step by step details. Maybe this is what makes Isaac's books sell. Maybe leaving what happens in the tent or wherever to the readers imagination would open these stories to a wider audience. One of his best Lot's of action, sex, & adventure in this one. At the end our hero winds up with a harem of four women. Any man that's ever been with more than one women at a time see's that for what it is. A tired life, drained of energy, dealing with constant jealousy, stress, and zero peace and quiet. What most see as a blessing is really a curse. One of his best Lot's of action, sex, & adventure in this one. At the end our hero winds up with a harem of four women. An excellent Read This was a great read. You were quickly drawn into the story, Kaden has a code that makes sense driving him forward and into adventures the arms of warrior women. The adventures are well done and so are the sexual encounters. The Sword is several steps above much of the harem adventures that are flooding the genre. You will enjoy this read.

Nice Conan Sword and Sorcery Story Set in the theme of Conan Sword and Sorcery with an additional harem element this although a little too simliar to Conan at the start becomes more modern with the strong female characters and the code that our southern barbarian lives by with a few quests and revenge to be gained.

Something different This book is longer than the authors normal work however it is still just as good. The mc plays a barbarian with a lawful alignment following his code with a party that only kicks of the harem nearing to the 3/4 story point. Overall a good read even if his code is slightly annoying throughout.

2 to 2.5 stars DNF 80%, not a big fan of this book but I have liked other books by this author. Just found the dialog between the characters corny and could not get into it fully. I did like some aspects but all in all it was not the best for me.

A mysterious blade with an unknown history This was an interesting read, with the concept of the Sword not fully realising until the last quarter of the book. The final quarter of the story tied up the loose ends and gives a great ending with the promise of more...

Enjoyed the characters and adult content Isaac Hooke holds a degree in engineering physics, though his more unusual inventions remain fictive at this time. He is an avid hiker, cyclist, and photographer who sometimes resides in Edmonton, Alberta.

Enjoyed this book but... Throw out the X rated love scenes and it would be a book I would enjoy reading a sequel if or telling others about it. I enjoyed the story, charactors and sword action.

Okay It's a pretty good harem story. Not so much sex that it distracts from the story. Too many perils, however. Okay It's a pretty good harem story. Not so much sex that it distracts from the story. Too many perils, however.

Interesting I don't usually read this type of story line, but the characters and their battle against all odds were to say the least a good story and I did enjoy it as well.
