I hadn't done well at keeping up with these as they came out, and ended up reading v. 42 and 43 back-to-back. I ordered this one as soon as I knew it had come out earlier this month, and gobbled it up right after it showed up in the mail. ...and now I'm going to have to wait a while for the next one. (sniffle) This volume's a lot more focused on Ren and Kyoko's relationship. Is it possible that their misunderstanding could get worse? They're both so reticent, for their own reasons, and they're naive about love, and they've each seen the other in situations that would take an extreme stretch to not interpret in a way that pulls them apart. It's a great slow burn, but these two need to 'fess up already, so we can see more about the cool ninja TV show that Kyoko and Moko are acting in. I enjoy the parts about Kyoko learning how to act just as much as I do her snail's-pace creeping away from hate and toward love. I guess I'll have to watch the Skip-Beat! anime a second time, and read the whole series through again*, while I wait for vol. 45. *I'll probably skip a couple of "method acting real life 'characters'" arcs, though.

OMG! The jealousy in this one. The misspeaking and dancing between Ren and Kyoko is so crazy adorable. But this volume was very slow and very character-focused. It was worth it though, as it showed so much development. And the bonus story at the end with the lamb was too cute! I love it and how Kyoko is starting to open up. A good thing as trouble is brewing with other "relationships" coming into play. OMG! The jealousy in this one. The misspeaking and dancing between Ren and Kyoko is so crazy adorable. Kyoko begins filming Lotus of the Mire, Sho coerces her into letting him pick up some food from the restaurant early in the morning, Ren sees this and is WAY TOO MEAN to Kyoko over it out of jealousy. In response, Kyoko decides to take a step back from their professional relationship in order to protect herself emotionally. So, in conclusion: Ren, you dummy.

Mr. Kuresaki is hilarious. I love the over the top emotions. Especially from someone who basically has a stone face most of the time. I love Kyoko trying to come to grips with Ren being in love with the girl she hates. She is really mature in a way. Yashiro being so afraid of Ren when Ren saw Kyoko and Sho together. lmao. 'Bj is in the car'. No just Kuon probably. lol. I can't believe Ren put that hurt expression on Kyoko's face! Grow up Ren your jealousy is really hurting her!!!!!!!!!! I was tired to hope there were some more lovey dovey moments instead of over-jealousy kind of thing. But here we go... it is what it is. I kinda think that Kyoko, Ren, and Sho will possibly lose this love game at the end. *sigh*

3.5 / 5 Lots of misunderstandings and drama in this one, especially between Ren and Kyoko, though as a whole it didn't seem like there was much else happening. Would have been nice to have a bit more action in this one 8'D Definitely seems as though the manga may be approaching its conclusion now, and I'm curious to see where things are going to wind up at the end... Chapter notes below for personal reference: (potentially spoiler heavy) (view spoiler)[ Act 264. (view spoiler)[Why did they stumble when they heard who Kyoko’s sword master was? Are they in awe, or do they not like him? -- Awe. It’s awe. -- LMAO. He’s absolutely mortified that he turned down Kanae, because she was ALSO taught by Uesugi, and he’s a MASSIVE FAN. That’s some serious regret there 8’D -- "Even failure itself can help one grow stronger. Do not fear it." Good advice Uesugi. -- Is Kanae going overseas? :o (hide spoiler)] Act 265. (view spoiler)[Bad Koga, picking on Kyoko on set and trying to make her a laughing stock :| Glad it didn’t work out for you there, buddy! -- Awwww...she’s preserving the flower ring that Ren gave her ;u; -- Uh ohhh…. And how did she manage to snag a kiss from Ren? o.O Famous actress Kusunoki Kana? Who's that? -- ...Kana now has an enemy. Story is 5 stars, electronic version has a little problem If you are checking a review for the 44th volume of this ongoing manga, you already know that the forte of this mangaka is the story. The story continues to be interesting and I'm amazed that the author can keep creating tension and surprise. The drawings are nice but not the author's best. I think the quality of the drawings peaked during the Caine and sister arch and are now not as nice and confident as they used to be. I think the quality of the drawings peaked during the Caine and sister arch and are now not as nice and confident as they used to be. There were a couple of times that I had to get a second look to identify main characters (Fuwa and Ren). As I said in the title, the electronic version has a little problem: On chapter 265, location 30, there are two pages fused together. The majority of the page is one we have already seen a little back and the one it should be is maybe a fourth of the page. I'm choosing to be optimistic and think that we are only missing one page, but it is a fact that when we turn to the next page, there is a jump in the story (meaning it might be two pages). And yes, there are some typos but no major problems with translation. You might be asking why I continue to give the book 5 stars taking into account the dip in the drawing quality and the e-book blip. It's because I don't think those things really matter in the overall enjoyment you get from the story and, I'm not ashamed to say, I want the publisher to continue to publish this series in the USA so that, someday, I get to know the end of this story.

Story: Filming is about to begin on Lotus in the Mire. Kyoko's persistence with the swordsmaster has secured her a spot and now she is consumed with pre-production. When Sho demands that she give him pickled vegetables right before he is to go overseas, she gives in to his request. But she was too friendly with Sho, trying to get rid of him fast, and the exchange was witnessed by Ren. Now, Ren worries Kyoko has fallen in love again with the man to whom she vowed revenge. And Ren is caught in his own 'scandalous' kiss with a mature actress. This is a pretty straightforward volume full of the usual cliche misunderstandings. There is a nice appearance by the president in all his showgirl glory at the end, providing a bit of some needed humor amidst the pathos. But Kyoko is finding it difficult to concentrate on her acting with the swirling emotions engulfing her at the moment. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Nakamura-san continues to deliver on the tragic romance (mis-romance?) between Tsuruga and Kyoko. While waiting a year for this volume was agony, the continued suspense and layering of drama was worth the extra six months (sort of - it's always pins and needles and an endless counting of days between each English release). There's never any lessening in the quality of the artwork, and the emotion stretches through your body, prompting visceral reactions along with the characters. There's never any lessening in the quality of the artwork, and the emotion stretches through your body, prompting visceral reactions along with the characters. Nakamura-san has a true gift. And, at long last, the bonus answers the aching question readers have pondered for VOLUMES: what was the gift Kyoko was so worried about on Tsuruga's birthday? (I won't reveal spoilers - I'll simply promise it was perfect and a sweet ending to the volume) Now I have to bide my time once again, but only for six months this time. Still much too long with another cliffhanger, but I'll have to manage.

Skip Beat will continue on being my favorite manga of the romance genre. This volume brings so many hilarious things, plenty of tears on Kyoko's part, and a very tense confrontation with a P'd.O. Ren. The ending has me all giggly for the future of the plot with Kyoko and Moko. And the short story was A CHARM. <3 Skip Beat will continue on being my favorite manga of the romance genre.
