I found many ravens among the peacocks in the generous spirit of the human race.’ “She’s kintsugi. You’re kintsugi. I don’t care about your brokenness. All I see is gold.” As a lot of readers did, I’m sure, I was hoping for my first 2021 read to be the top-tier, five star token offered to set off a certain bookish temperature, not particularly for the year ahead, but more an odd mix of hopeful thinking and to break my cycle of mid-range ratings. That’s not to say I missed the mark with ‘On the Rox’ by Kat Addams, but I did fall face-first into another read that met me with equal parts withdrawal and the absence of reader/story union. While this didn’t particularly fill me with feeling, it wasn’t a bad read, I just didn’t feel the spark. At all. I tried to dig deep, but while divine interference worked for Jay and Rox, it didn’t for me... T H E _ S T O R Y Jaxon ‘Jay’ Taylor has lived a two-year fling trekking the globe. Travelling was energising, a peak time and a wake up call to trade change with loss and line up a lifelong dream to see the world. He did. He wanted to live life differently. Soaked with the lessons of travel and landscape, he’s back in the US to unpack his life, settle down and lay it out with a forever mate to share forever everythings with. If he can find her, that is…he just didn’t expect a loud and proud, outspoken she-posse who rode a pink taco truck to hold his endgame. Jay’s familiar comforts are changing, and while he still hasn’t quite learned the art of living boldly, he’s learned what bold looks like; Raven haired, marked with art and she’s the undying spice that Scarlet Herb’s cuisine may never match. He may be cut from a different cloth, but he’s too keen to be stitched into her life for good. She’s a far cry from his normal, but if normal is plain, undented and very un-Rox-like, he’d settle for a local flavour that tastes like dark-haired divinity. Roxanne ‘Rox’ Corvus and her feisty, female threesome run a thriving street food business with their devil-may-care style and a witty, dauntless flair that has the customers rolling in to taste their hot-on-demand shizzle sauce. Rox is familiar with the pastures she’ll never wet her feet with again, her inked skin re-asserts what once was, but never again. Running into life enables speed and speed eats up the space between then and now, but a few off-chance meetings with an Australian gentleman knocks the breath from her loud lungs, replaced with an ample serving of Jay-specific desire. With a bounce in her heels, a smile in her eyes and sigh in her healing heart, her bad luck twists to good. She’s never quite seen the sweeter side of life, but something tells her Jay is it. T H O U G H T S… Rox: We don’t know to what extent Rox has experienced domestic abuse, it’s an incomplete picture that we aren’t supposed to access, which is why this story doesn’t hold the heavy weight one might presume. The lack of topical heaviness is what makes this an easy-to-read, lightweight story. It’s more about possibility than pain. Rox’s past sits firmly in the background and only briefly from time to time is it even mentioned, though it’s something she’s still healing from. Still trying to accept. From a a romantic angle, I understand purpose. Though it’s only spoken about with the barest of details, I admire the underlying dedication to domestic abuse survivors. This story Is more about what comes after, the success Rox has made, the friends who have her back, how she’s giving back and sharing herself with fellow survivors and how she might feel comfortable trusting herself to satisfy a savoury relationship. I think it’s fitting that Rox’s story stayed with her, that she shared it only to heal others and hadn’t yet invited Jay into that painfully intimate part of her. A survivor’s pace is theirs to control, their choice to tell. It’s Rox’s chance to fly free. Only, I didn’t fly free beside her. For me, Rox wasn’t easy to put together as a character. My emotional chemistry with each character in this book was slim at best. Remote enough that I couldn’t strike up any feelings for them. I was oddly surprised, but this distant feeling wasn’t singular to Rox, because I had zero levels of chemistry with any character. Jay: It was refreshing and atypical to have a main lead who inherently lives with a slow pace. I also loved it. Jay is mature, wants a family and isn’t the always-confidant man who has it all together. He’s not the thrill-riding, fast fun type of guy, even if Rox does teach him some thrills. It supports the idea that life is not better lived in the fast line, even if Rox lives it that way. It’s a nice feeling when we get different flavours from the sweet shop. He might not be a sharer, but he seems in touch with his feelings enough. I didn’t feel a strong connect with Jay either but he’s probably the character that I might have felt a tiny something for and it seems that this was development Rox and he needed. Dialogue/Narration: Strangely, the dialogue comes across as dry and more filler-type and replaceable than necessary. I didn’t expect flavourless and flat engagements when this book, at first impression, emanated flavour. The verbal intercourse between the characters reads more surface-level and also quite repetitive. I really do like a softer, sympathetic hero sometimes, but Jay’s professions are too saccharine and overtly divine. Rox may have been affected by his naughty and nice one-liners but again, I surprisingly wasn’t. As well that, we’ve got too many pieces of dialogue that are punctuated with scores of exclamation marks. Presumably to emphasise tone and energy, but it comes off as artificial and as if the characters really rather enjoy shouting with excitement on every page, in every scene!!! T H E _ F I N A L ‘On the Rox’ is a role reversal, opposites attract romance, tempering a concoction that’s rily Rox and gentle Jay. As I mentioned, this was an underwhelming read with not a lot to look forward to. It wasn’t the flavoursome romance I had assumed it would be and the anticipation died down rather quickly when the reality became unmistakable. I’ve howled my love for character-heavy stories many times before. A world without people is equal to a story without a decadent population. I could read for characters alone if it came to that and I can’t engage with a story if I can’t find love with the quirky, spirited, walking hopefuls who bring it to life at the very least. There is nothing particularly bad about the book at all, it just amounted to an endgame that was a middle-of-the-road, prosaic affair. A time of finding laughs and light humour after a drought of sadness for them both, he’s sleepless in outer Forks and she’s smitten for the man down under. He’s wine lists, top-tier cuisine and conservative to his core. She’s tats, tacos and a part of a four part, free-frolicking posse who live with spice. Fine dining and fast chum. Upper-end establishment and a dinosaur branded food-truck. A mismatch of classy and casual, with a divine balance of fraternising on more than just local chow and cosmopolitan cuisine. P O T E N T I A L_T R I G G E R_W A R N I N G : Swearing, adult content such as sex scenes and other adult situations with the mild, background theme of domestic abuse. Some things I didn’t like… 1) Either I’m overlooking details, or we simply aren’t given enough of them in the first place. Backstory and background info helps to fill in the gaps and answer small, but trivial question. It also helps to understand a character. History shapes the present condition, so it’s reasonable to say that it shapes the present character. Sharing history between characters gels a union more than you might realise. Rox and Jay did very little of that and we also don’t know a lot about them with the exception of giving up what the author wants to give up. Perhaps it will come after they’re more settled - I.e. post-story - but it wasn’t lacking for me. 2) One thing I like about reading Is description. It lets me create a visual in my mind. I found it odd that I don’t know what any of the supporting characters looked like, other than one being Afro-american and all them being ‘gorgeous’. I definitely don’t know what Aiden looks like either besides being ‘handsome’. This might sound like a small and irrational point and maybe the author has an explanation for this, but quite a few things about this story are vague, so perhaps I wanted something to be rich with description. I honestly don’t even know who the older brother is, Aiden or Jay and Rox is said to have dark eyes AND blue eyes, and I still don’t know which one it is… 3) I got the feeling the chemistry between Rox and Jay isn’t supposed to be subtle but it is supposed to be relatively tentative (at least in an emotional sense). The chemistry had a speedier physical pace but a slower emotional one. Despite the many times I’m told how odd but divine a bond a they both had, I couldn’t access that chemistry. I also found that the bedroom scenes were very basic and without any real impact. ------------------------------------------ Visit my blog for more reviews: V.L. Kat Addams hit it out of the park again with this book! It might just be my favorite by her. I literally laughed out loud most of the way through this book! I thought it made a very important point about self healing ❤ I can't wait to see what other shenanigans DTF can get into with the rest of the series. I received this book free as an ARC reader for review. There was nothing really bad about this book, the characters were fun, the plot was OK… I just never really got into it. Roxanne and Jay are two people trying to rebuild their lives after tragedy. Roxanne does it by being bold and reckless, she lives life out loud and tries to help those around her. Jay lives in denial. He ran away from his life when his parents died and his fiancé left him. Now he says he wants to settle down but he won’t actually let anybody in. They both have a lot of healing to do and neither seems to intent on self reflection. It takes some time apart to realize they really need to be together

Rox’s track record with men is definitely not going to win her a gold medal so she is taking a break from men and relationships and instead is going to focus on her best friends and the business that they own together. From the moment they meet the sparks fly however as they spend time together and get to know each other the sparks of antagonism turn into sparks of a different kind. Some were because they were hilarious. Some were because they were well-written. Some were because they touched me. I cried from the middle of Chapter 10 until the end of Chapter 13. Sad tears became happy tears. The one thing that disappointed me, was the night of Crystal Cream Pie's debut. I had really hoped the other male debut would have been Aiden. Thank you for the opportunity to have this ARC, Kat. I have a feeling that this will be a huge success, just like The Shizzle Sauce! P.S. The Cock-blocking squirrel scene will leave you in stitches!

I had a huge amount of fun reading this book and am so happy to have found it. It's sweet, sexy and funny. What sets Kat's writing style apart is her sense of humor. My taco addiction was satisfied and had a nice plate of them while reading this book. With every book Kat writes, her story telling keeps exceeding her last. When you think she can’t shock you with her funny dirty mind anymore, she does exactly that. At one point in the book I had tears of laughter and had to take a small break so I could continue to read because my eyes were so watery I couldn’t see. This book is very near and dear to me because I felt like I was reading a book about my own life. A woman who is tough, doesn't take crap from no one, learns from her mistakes, is sarcastically funny, and knows how to pull off shenanigans.

I like to try new authors so when I saw the blurb for this story I thought it would be one I would enjoy. Unfortunately I just didn't care for this book. I didn't connect with either Rox nor Jay. Rox was a little too much for my taste and Jay just seemed like a weak character. I think the author was trying to show Jay as a sexy, sweet and sensitive guy when really I feel like Jay was just boring. We didn't really get to see into Rox and Jay's relationship as it was mostly telling than showing. I also felt like their relationship was a little too insta love and just full of sex. I did like the idea of Rox and her friends having each other's backs and not judging each other. I liked how the author discussed serious issues and showed the process that you need to heal yourself before you try and be part of a couple. There were some funny scenes that made me chuckle. Overall, I just wasn't a fan of this book and probably won't continue with this series.

On The Rox is a laugh-out-loud book that literally had my laughing so hard I was crying. The DTF girls are wicked funny, a bit crude and just overall sassy, sexy and smart. You will either be like “yes! That’s me and my girls!!!” or want to join DTF yourself. #girlganggoals ⁣ This is a romance of opposites attract. Straight-laced restauranteur Jay and tattooed food truck owner Rox. They should never work but they do. They are all immediate chemistry and steam. I mean, come on, a sexy Aussie hunk and a fiesty tattooed beauty can be nothing but 🔥 together. ⁣ ⁣ However, in the middle of this funny and steamy read Kat adds a lot of depth that I really enjoyed. These characters had so many layers to them beyond the surface of what you see. They each had real life struggles to deal with and overcome and I liked reading it. These weren’t perfect characters that were completely unrealistic...you understood their issues, sympathized with them and you rooted for them. ⁣ ⁣ It’s a lighthearted rom-com that gives you enough of the feels without dumping all the angst/drama on you. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was both exactly what I thought I would get from Kat but also so much more emotional than I expected but absolutely loved. ⁣ ⁣ I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. ⁣ ⁣

On The Rox was a hilarious read that I simply couldn't turn the pages quickly enough while reading. First of all, the DTF needs more books, because they were the ultimate girl gang, and I NEED MORE. This is Rox's story, as fate steps in with Jay, a man she shares a ton of chemistry with. It's a sweet story with realistic, slow burn aspects as they try to navigate coming across each other. Rox is a strong heroine who takes no nonsense, and she alone got 5 stars. Jay is a sweet man, almost too sweet at times, but hey, I don't think I ever got mad at him even once. It kept me laughing a lot, even took on some serious topics which squeezed my heart, and the lack of drama was refreshing. So, hit those one click buttons to experience this sweet with a side of sexy goodness for yourselves! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This was another new to me author, and even though the story itself is short, there are still so many laughs and emotions throughout that had me enjoying my reading experience so much!! Reconstruction 3.5 This is a very hot story about 2 people who think they are broken, who are neighbors and who meet several times by chance. Jay is Australian, divorced and he comes to help his brother for his new restaurant in the south of the United States. One evening he sees his neighbor Rox by the window and he is seduced by her. Then he meets her several times and they seduce each other, however both think they are broken by their past, which makes their relationship difficult to develop. On the Rox is good read. This one had some funny moment, serious moments, and sweet romance all wrapped up into a nice story. Rox is a strong independent woman. I loved her. She has layers and pass issues. Jay is a sexy guy. He's from Australia and has a sexy accent. Jay is drawn to Rox and the same for her. I liked these two together. Jay had his issues too. At one point I was surprised by somethings and was nervous that these two would not get a happy ever after. These one had me hooked and it On the Rox is good read. Since I stumbled upon this book thanks to a newsletter. I just needed a break from the series I was reading at the time. Well, I'm more than glad I found and read this book. It was absolutely amazing. The characters of Jay and Rox fit so perfectly together. They had their ups and downs but it was a spectacular story that kept my attention all the way through. Now I have a new author to add to my ever growing list of go to authors for a fantastic read. This one will stay with me and I can’t wait Since I stumbled upon this book thanks to a newsletter. This is such a funny story to read! This is the first book of this series and i am glad I am reviewing this new author for me which I am sure that has so much more for us to read! Rox is this strong willed, smart lady who along with her friends created this support system. She has past demons that changed her life past to be where she is right now . Everything shifts when she meets Jay, the Aussie with his own past issues. Their story is fun, sweet and will leave you with a good feeling. I hone This is such a funny story to read! **AUDIO REVIEW** This was a cute and funny easy listen. It was slow and steady and a relateable story. This was my first book from Kat Addams and I was pleasantly surprised. It was over the top ridiculous with lots of sexy accents and kick a$$ women. Laurie West and Gregory Salinas were new to me narrators and did an amazing job voicing this book. They brought these characters to life with enthusiasm and spunk. It was a quick listen and story. I'm so excited to say I've read my first book by Kat Addams and am officially a fan! On The Rox had me laughing so hard I cried. NO JOKE! I've added Jay to my Fictional Husband List and consider myself part of DTF thanks to Rox and the rest of the girl gang! Definitely a must read for those that live for romantic comedies or need a pick me up from reading your last dark romance book. (I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.)
