I don’t normally seek out political thrillers or crime dramas, but this one fell into my lap, and I’m glad that I gave it a chance. The book is well-written and fast-paced, with a second half that I just couldn’t put down. Also, the book is incredibly relatable and well-researched! Even though it has a huge cast of characters that run the gamut from the hard-boiled policeman to the wacky nun, the author somehow manages to make them feel like they are all grounded in reality. Plus, it’s set in my home state of New Jersey, and the descriptions are so on-point that they made me a little homesick. Overall, this book was definitely worth the read, and a great opener from a new author! I will for sure be picking up the sequel when it comes out!

Blood Contest is thoughtfully written with colorful characters to whom I've grown attached. The swiftly-moving plot is well-researched, speaks to modern politics, and has a satisfying surprise ending. (No spoilers! ;) If that's not a formula for an enjoyable read, I don't know what is. Blood Contest by P.K. Abbot, is a fast-paced mystery/thriller involving a high level official and the death of his son; the murder which occurs in front of his two grandchildren. This author has created believable and interesting characters who you get to know right away. Using first names and last names interchangeably did make reading a bit confusing at first, until you had all the characters in your head with first and last name. I think I would have done better with an actual list of characters, like those in a play manuscript to eliminate the confusion and allow me to focus on the plot. The plot was well developed, and you felt like you were there with the characters. All of the character involvement makes sense and adds a "true to life" feel to the book. The author ties up most loose ends by the end of the book, helping to explain each character's involvement. I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars, as there was a loose end that left me wondering. Once I picked this book up, I had a hard time putting it down, as I wanted to find out what was going to happen next. There really aren’t any spoilers in the book, as the author has weaved such a tangled web you are constantly being surprised with events throughout the story. It was definitely worth reading.

Politically driven plot right from the start. Murder and corruption is abundant in this intense thriller. But who is the real culprit? And what is the real story behind the murder of a political figures son and who ordered it? So many questions throughout the whole book. Did not at any point have any idea who did what, where and why. Brilliant plot driven writing that keeps you guessing. I was shocked 😲, but once the truth came out it didn't surprise me as to the reasons why. Politically driven plot right from the start. Murder and corruption is abundant in this intense thriller. Recently I was given a copy of P. K. Abbot’s novel, “Blood Contest” as a Goodreads winner. I always am optimistic that the story will be as good as the synopsis, but that’s not always the case. This is a political murder mystery in which the son of a presidential hopeful is killed in the presence of his two young daughters. Now if you are not interested in political intrigue, don’t be put off. This is not normally my genre either but the emphasis here is focused mostly on the two detectives search for the killer, and what a mystery it was. This was a very faced paced book with enough twists in the plot to keep you hanging on until the end. I rated this book a four out of five. My only complaints, if you can call them complaints, is that there were quite a few characters, and while they all came together in the end, at times I had to get them straight in my own mind. In addition, there was an intentional loose end at the finale which means I have to get the second installment to see if it is worked out there. I can’t really complain about that though as I look forward to reading it now that I’ve discovered this series.

I was fortunate enough the author provided had provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I am definitely interested in seeing how the story proceeds as to whether the appearance of the "villain/powerbroker" is the development of a recurring character or whether this was just a one-off character that was necessary for the story. This book was definitely interesting (as mentioned above) and I am looking forward to the next book (or books in the series). Although the story was very interesting, I found that the ending (prior to the fate of the villain/powerbroker) was a little predictable.

Blood Contest was a political thriller about the murder of the Governor's son. He was taking a walk with his two young daughters and their new puppy on Christmas when someone walks up to him and shoots him point blank.
