She mislaid her actual college applications and was left no chance of getting into one of the better academies, unlike all six of her brothers and also both of her parents. Her whole family are well known for working in the Paranormal Enforcement Agency, but Briar’s error has left her needing to get good grades, which shouldn’t be much of a problem for an overachiever like her and then ask for a transfer to a better school. When her parents drop her off, her father can’t even look at her as he is so disappointed in her! Another student bumps into her as her parents drive away and gives her the little jewel of information, that accommodation is first come first served! If she wants a decent room, she needs to be quick. Unfortunately, she knows nothing about this school and how matters run and she is left with the worst room in the place. A room in the basement, with leaky and noisy pipes and so much machinery noise, she will get little to no sleep each day. She turns up for orientation, to find she is the only one who has turned up, apart from a student called Jet, who is there to show new students around. What she finds out, is that no-one normally turns up to such occasions and they also don’t turn up to classes either! The name, The Academy of Underachievers, is very apt, as none of the students really care about anything except partying and having fun. Most are up most of the night and then sleep during the day. Even most of the teachers aren’t used to students actually turning up to class. That is apart from one, with a sexy female witch who uses her skills to try and entice the male students into doing things they shouldn’t! Briar went to one class and didn’t bother going back. Yes, it’s to train the male students how to avoid temptation once they start work with the agency, but there’s not much chance of that with any of these students. Jet seems to quite like Briar and even though he is in his third year, he wants to hang about with her. The only problem is a fellow third year student called Angie, who has known Jet and his family since he was born and who hangs about him as if she is involved with him. Angie takes an instant dislike to Briar and makes life at school difficult for her and any chance of a friendship, never mind a relationship with Jet, really hard. What Briar doesn’t know, is that Jet and Angie’s family have an agreement between them and if she continues with her relationship with Jet, then there could be deadly consequences. It will also reveal a secret about her own family’s history, which she knew nothing about, but which places a target on her back. A great start to an academy tale, with a few surprises for her fellow students and a chance to become more than is expected of them, romance, a dangerous witch with a vendetta, weird professors, ghosts in the local woods who are lonely and desperate for a chat and so much more. There are lots of amusing little antidotes in the storyline, which bring the place to life and great characters. It may not have been the place Briar or her family thought she would end up at, but she has an important role to play, to change the status quo. I really enjoyed reading this book and you have burdening romance but also an evil foe to be overcome. All in a day at the academy! I look forward to reading the next instalment. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

The characters are engaging and full of personality complete with strengths and foibles. They keep you interested in their plight right until then. The storyline flows smoothly as the characters experience surprises, action, emotional drama, romance, and suspense. The narrative and dialogue were well done. It was great to have a strong female role and the romance was sweet. I like this book and look forward to the next book in the series. She finds love, friendship, and someone trying to make her life miserable. The ending has me waiting anxiously for year 2, to see if she transfers or stays, plus there was a bit of a cliffhanger ending. I'd also love to see more about both Briar and Key's brothers.

I wanted to like this story much more than what I did. It started out really good - the story was original, interesting and the characters seemed to be going places. But a third through the book and I started to feel as though the characters became immature in how catty they talked to each other and their actions reminded me of bratty teenagers. I'm probably not the authors target audience and think that others who enjoy Young Adult themed writing will enjoy this story more than me. I wanted to like this story much more than what I did. An academy where those students go, who no academy is willing to take. Add a healthy dose of paranormal genre and you've got a great cocktail. This book was very unexpected and highly addictive. This is another story based in a boarding academy. The only problem is the new girl is not an underachiever. She also catches the eye of the most eligible bachelor on campus.
