I always appreciate books on space that use simple, kid-friendly terminology to explain the concepts to kids. I also didn't know that there is a heart on Pluto--so that was darling. This is definitely a good amount of text--I can see it working for a storytime on Space.

Heart on Pluto is a children's picture book written by Karl Jones and illustrated by Andrew J. Ross. It recounts the mission of the New Horizons probe and its report from Pluto. Engineered by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), with a team led by S. Alan Stern, the spacecraft was launched in 2006 with the primary mission to perform a flyby study of the Pluto system in 2015. Jones' text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and informative. Jones personifies the New Horizons probe as it travels throughout the solar system towards Pluto. Backmatter gives a bulleted fact list about Pluto. Ross gives the encounter a warm and informal air by rendering the planets and probe with spongy surfaces, as if they were constructed out of blocks of colored foam, and the heart with sharp, nearly symmetrical borders so that it looks cut out and pasted onto Pluto's surface. The premise of the book is rather straightforward. The personified probe does a good job setting up the climactic revelation with an account of its long, long journey past Jupiter and the other outer planets and a simple introduction to Pluto’s changing official status. All in all, Heart on Pluto is an interplanetary lovefest with sprinkles of astronomy.

Honestly, how can you NOT like Pluto? Aside from keeping an eye on the further reaches of our solar system, and surviving the it's-a-planet-it's-not-a-planet debate with flying colors...it has a stinkin' heart for all to see! It's a great new addition to any library, personal, school or otherwise, and a creative way to introduce wee ones to the worlds and wonders beyond our own planet! Who knows? The next mission to the great beyond explorer may be in your midst! Take heed and share this little wonder! **ecopy received for review; opinions are my own

A nice little narrative nonfiction book about NASA's New Horizons journey to visit the Planet Formerly Known as Pluto. I enjoyed it and love how the trim size echoes the relative size of Pluto itself, now reclassified as a dwarf planet but still looming large in the hearts of many on Earth. Thanks to Penguin Young Readers for the review copy!

A super simple and adorable introduction to the dwarf planet, Pluto, by the New Horizons space probe. The final page includes very basic information about this celestial body. Culminating with the discovery of a heart-shaped nitrogen lake, this book is a perfect primer for preschoolers interested in space!
