His Hot Tamale is fabulously sweet edition to the Kappa Sweet collection. We are introduced to Catalina in the Smarty Pants book but now we are front and center to her story. That all changes when Jonah a cute soccer star strikes up a converstion with her and begins to realize how sassy, funny and interesting she is. I loved sassy Cat, and quirky Jonah! Cat has always felt invisible, and like a plain Jane. It never really bothered her much, until she hears a surprising comment from Jonah, someone she was starting to like. Can Cat forgive Jonah once she finds out what he meant by the comment, or did the words cut too deep and hurt her? A great Halloween novella from Mayra Statham.

Another pretty standard ugly duckling makeover, nerd-jock college romance, but still sweet and fun escapism. Catalina (h), or Cat, considers herself part of the background, but soccer star Jonah (H) notices her wit and smile and sense of humor. Unfortunately, she overhears him trying to describe her to his frat brothers - an "ugly duckling." She takes offense and is hurt, but is what she thinks what he really meant? This is part of a cute series of contemporary romance novellas set at the University of the Desert in CA, focusing on girls in the Kappa Sweets sorority. The series as a whole is light and fluffy romance, with some of the most patient and devoted college guys I've ever read. There are some themes and tricks that show up more than once in the series (the outdoor movie date, for example), but unless you power through all the stories in a weekend *cough cough*, it's not really noticeable or bothersome. One odd point is that there's very little physical character description, especially for the H characters. Like, we know that Cat's Latina, but do we ever know what Jonah's coloring is, other than 'fairer than she is'? His hair color is certainly never mentioned. The characters here are a touch stereotypical but still enjoyable. Jonah was more unique, with his "quirky" metaphors and awkward sense of humor. I thought Cat was a touch over sensitive - "ugly duckling" to me is more like "diamond in the rough," more about unrealized potential than something truly negative. However, if she's heard that all throughout childhood and in constant comparisons with her sisters (filling in gaps here from little statements in the story), then she might be more triggered by that phrase than I'd be. So, yeah, while I liked Jonah more than Cat, I still thought they made a cute couple. A few small typos (thrown/throne - that sort of thing) but nothing big enough to really pull you out of the story. My bigger issue was the continuity of her costume - a Cleopatra costume is not the same as a Greek goddess costume, and the descriptions were used interchangeably here and into the start of book 3. Also, about continuing into book 3... (view spoiler)[Allie was drugged at the Halloween party, but nothing really came of it, no lesson or closure - nothing. Are we going to get more in book 3, Allie's story? Because that seems like a serious topic to just brush off. (hide spoiler)] Cat was described in book 1 with 'Ashley Graham-like curves.' She was harsher, calling herself fat. Just saying, but that the cover model is nothing like Ashley Graham in build. Alternating 1st person POV. No OW/OM drama. No cheating or love triangles. Very simple and straightforward story, no real depth. Short, sweet, light, and just happy romance. HFN because no down-the-road looks. The epilogue isn't really about the couple as much as leading into the next story (not really a cliffhanger, so much as a teaser). Would I read more in this series/by this author? Yes to both. Have read all the Kappa Sweets books out so far, and enjoyed them. Always good to have another reliably enjoyable short story author to turn to - makes for good quick escapes.

I am interested in the whole Allie and SideRide driver, they seem to have some history together.

Cute romance Cute insta love romance. College setting with frat and sorority houses as main locations. I enjoyed this book and the storyline the length was perfect to wrap everything up in a nice bow. I would however love to see a little bit more about what happens with the H and h in the future.

This was another quick and entertaining read. You can't help but like Catalina and Jonah. They might of had a rough start in the beginning, but once they worked everything out it was game on. The first book in this series had some cute laughable moments, and this one was right up there with it. You can't help but shake your head laughing at some of the quirky things that comes out of Jonah's mouth. I just can't wait to see what's to come in the next book. ✯✯4 Tamale Filled Stars!!!✯✯ I sure do love me a Mayra Statham book. They’re always so good! When His Smarty Pants ended Mayra set up the storyline for this book but only gave you half the storyline. Catalina is the quiet girl. And, she was always OK with that. Catalina went to a frat party one night and ended ✯✯4 Tamale Filled Stars!!!✯✯ I sure do love me a Mayra Statham book. They’re always so good! She’s got a beautiful mother and beautiful older sisters so Catalina never tried dressing to impress. She wore baggy clothes, kept her nose in her books and worried about her grades. And, she was always OK with that. Catalina went to a frat party one night and ended up talking to Jonah, whose whose on the soccer team with her sorority sister Cora’s boyfriend Milo. Afterwards they end up texting back and forth and Catalina enjoys their conversations. For the first time in her life she decides to put herself out there and ask Jonah to go with her to her sororities Halloween party. Before she gets the chance to ask him she overheard him talking to his friends and when he calls her an ugly duckling Catalina’s heartbreaks. Catalina wants nothing to do with Jonah ever again. But, she gets her friend Allie to help her with a complete 100% makeover. Catalina vows to show Jonah what he’s missing out on. Hopefully, she’s strong enough to stay away from him. Jonah wasn’t looking for a relationship. At one of his frat parties he strikes up a conversation with Catalina. He’s always thought she was beautiful and didn’t know why she dressed in those baggy clothes. When Catalina made him laugh everything changed. Jonah enjoyed their texting. Then one day his texts and calls went unanswered. Jonah didn’t know why Catalina was ghosting him, until his friend Milo told him. Jonah never meant to call Catalina an ugly duckling. He’d never meant it to sound the way it did. Jonah just wanted to keep his friends away from her. He liked Catalina and didn’t want to loose her. Jonah plans on doing everything to get Catalina back, he doesn’t care what it is. He was shocked to see Catalina after she did her makeover. Jonah will do anything to get Catalina to forgive him bc he never meant to hurt her. This book was cute. I really liked Catalina and Jonah. He was quirky and said weird things that never came out the way he meant them. Catalina was such a sweet person. They were perfect for each other. The only thing I didn’t like in this book was a situation that went down at a frat party. Catalina made a comment after Allie was acting too drunk too fast after taking a drink from somebody. Then nothing! I really hope it gets brought up bc that’s a huge bomb to drop then nothing. Other then that it was such a cute quick read. I’m a fan of both the sorority sisters and the frat brothers. I wish Mayra did a novella series for the frat brothers.

This was a sweet addition to the Kapa Sweets Series. His Smarty Pants (book 01) ended with Cora comforting/talking to Catalina about what happened to make her so upset. Well this story takes off from there. Catalina is a character we all can relate to. It’s heartbreaking yet understandable to have insecurities about the way you look and act. Well in this story Catalina overheard a conversation that was about her and stuff was said that was not nice. After that Cat decided she wanted a new look and with the help of her sorority sisters she does just that. However there’s always 2 sides to every story and maybe Jonah isn’t as bad as she thinks. He is such a sweet and caring guy who means well but sometimes people just don’t understand what he’s trying to say. Like in this situation but once he explains himself it makes total sense. I really enjoyed watching Jonah grovel and Catalina learning that she’s beautiful just the way she is. Now I will say I’m a little disappointed with the whole Colt situation during the party scene. The scene started off really good and it became intense and than.... NOTHING. Cat said she would explain and she never does. The whole situation was forgotten and never brought up again so we never get a full understanding of what happened. Oh well, maybe she’ll bring it back up in Allie’s book which I am totally looking forward to. I swear Mayra Statham knows how to get a reader hooked with those teasers. Soo exciting !!! Can’t wait to find out about Allie and the mystery truck guy. Happy Reading 🤓 PS- I received an ARC for my honest review and I honestly recommend giving this book/series a chance🖤

OMgosh, His Hot Tamale is absolutely the cutest novella! I knew it was going to be epic with the teaser at the end of His Smarty Pants and it was even better than I had hoped. Can he convince Cat to give him a chance to win her heart? This story is perfect, Jonah and his weird idioms, Cat and her compassion: they are the perfect couple. Watching them fall in love was awesome and I loved every moment! Brava Mayra Statham!

Well, this was a bit disappointing. First of all, I get that this is a short story, but it was too short. There were so many loose ends and so little character development happening here that I was really unsatisfied after finishing this book. If I hadn't seen that an editor was stated on the amazon site, I would have guessed no one had proofed this one. Not only were punctuation marks missing (a lot), but there was one scene where the names were clearly interchanged which resulted in one character wrapping her arms around herself while standing next to herself. The author (and editor) should go over that again. All in all it was still a sweet story and I enjoyed reading it, but, as I said, it could have been longer.

Super cute story about how the hot guy soccer star meets a nerdy, shy girl who is hiding behind her bulky clothes and glasses, only to reveal her inner goddess! This was one sweet novella. I wasn't sure what to expect with the title, but I was so pleasantly surprised with this story. Jonah and Cat. Diametrically different. One is a jock, the other a bookish sorority girl who goes "unnoticed." Can she get past her own insecurities and open herself to another person? I thought the story was very sweet and adored Jonah. They are both quirky and adorable. Great story with wonderful characters. I cannot wait to see what she writes next. This was one sweet novella. Jonah has been infatuated with Cat for years and senior year is his chance. Too bad he messes up with his unique quirkiness and use of metaphors. Cat is stunning, smart and strong. I love how she takes nothing from anyone and is true to herself despite initially seeming shy. Their journey is quick, funny and filled with banter. I recommend this to anyone looking for a book to get out of a book slump. This series so far is fast paced and had me laughing out loud from start to finish.
