This is a sweet children's story about grief and loss. Drew's dragon, Diggory Doo, lost his caretaker before he came to stay with Drew. Diggory is very sad and angry and doesn't want to play with the children at school. Drew tells the reader about Diggory's process of moving through grief and emphasizes that there is no right or wrong way to grieve and that grief can stick around for some time. I read this book to see if it would be appropriate for use with the kids I see for grief counseling. Th This is a sweet children's story about grief and loss. I read this book to see if it would be appropriate for use with the kids I see for grief counseling. The Diggory books can be kind of hit and miss. I really like Diggory and the stories are usually very sweet and at least relatively informative. Rather than a comprehensive look at grief and loss, this book is more of an introduction to the concept of loss. Unlike comparable books, such as When Dinosaurs Die, this does not provide a lot of factual information about death. This book is also much more religious and overtly references Heaven several times. As a result, this book would likely be inappropriate for children who do not believe in the Christian version of the afterlife. I would have appreciated acknowledgement of a variety of different ways of moving through grief, rather than only referencing the idea that you will see your loved one again in heaven. All in all, a good starting off place, but not appropriate for all children and likely in need of additional adult support as the young person reads and asks questions.

The Dragon books are so hit or miss, and I think this one is a miss. It is a glossing over of loss and death and grief that had potential to be useful, but it veers off into platitudes like grief will eventually be gone, and you'll see your loved one again in heaven. I hate when heaven is presented as a fact in a children's picture books, especially one that is not explicitly sold as a religious book. Stop. You don't know.
