His drinking has spun out of control and Rena calls on the only person she trusts. She’s used to taking care of her younger brother but what happens when she graduates and leaves? She doesn’t have time to play what if, though, as she has real life issues to contend with. Her father has been abducted by terrorists and the new boy from her school is not who he appears to be. Now, she’s on the run and everything she’s ever know disappears in a puff of smoke. Who can she trust? Certainly not the agent of some secret government agency, talking about super powers, aliens and saving the world from a madman. She must be crazy because the more she’s around secret agent guy, the stronger her feelings for him grow. Can she navigate through all the lies to reach the truth? Better still, will she ever see her father and brother again? Fear Justice is a thrilling urban fantasy filled with such emotion, I was hooked from the very first page. Like the series Roswell and the movie franchise X-Men, this is a story about discovering who you really are and how being different is a good thing. There are quite a few action scenes but they are balanced by tension-filled scenes between Rena and the agent sent to bring her in. There’re also sweet romance elements which adds a well-roundedness to the plot. Why is this a must-read? I couldn’t stop reading it, not even when I was supposed to be asleep. I kept telling myself, only one more page and fifteen minutes later, I was still engrossed in the plot. The characters are so captivating, I wanted to hop right into the book and be right in the thick of it. The ending was satisfactory because it wasn’t a cliffhanger. I know the story continues in the next book yet some of the main conflicts were resolved. If you’re looking for a book to lose yourself in, pick up Fear Justice. A strong heroine, lots of action and drama, plus a little romance thrown in. . . you couldn’t ask for anything more. Highly recommend! Favorite Character/Quote: Rena. From the very beginning, I liked her. She’s got such a strong personality and every time she is confronted with an obstacle, she figures out how to work around it. Her disbelief by the “agency” and the truth her parents kept hidden is accurately portrayed and it made me love her more. I can’t wait to see what she does next. C. Bolick. Seventeen-year-old Rena Mason has one thing on her mind; graduating her senior year at high-school, getting a full scholarship so she can study aeronautical engineering and most of all, getting out of the hick Florida town she has lived in since she was six-years-old. Rena used to love their life there but all that changed three years ago when they were involved in a car accident that saw Rena’s beloved mother killed. With her father taking to the bottle, Rena was forced to grow up way too soon and assume full responsibility for looking after her little brother. Little did Rena realise the appearance of a new boy at school would change her life forever. When her father is kidnapped by terrorists, Rena needs to confront the idea that her father had a secret existence and life before they moved to their tiny trailer-home in their small town. When it seems the terrorists are actually after her, Rena starts to understand that she may be much more than she originally thought, also and that her mother might not have been just the loving housewife and mother she had always known and missed every single day since her death. C. C. Bolick has produced an extremely readable and exciting action thriller that is tailor-made for the young adult audience it is undoubtedly aimed at. Fear Justice (The Fear Chronicles Book 1) is doubtless the start of what promises to be an exciting series featuring these young “secret agents”. I would probably describe best this story, as a cross between Men in Black and X-Men. The idea of a super-secret government agency tasked with dealing with aliens and those humans with enhanced powers, either genetically received or by accident is certainly one that has been done before but I found Bolick’s slant on the story to be refreshing and novel. I particularly liked the developing relationship between Rena and Travis. The idea that they are falling for each other and yet are not able to actually touch each other; skin to skin, is intriguing and opens up all sorts of possible story arcs in the next book in the series. I also found the “super power” attributed to Rena to be odd and unusual enough to lift the story above the run-of-the-mill young adult thrillers. Rena is a superb character with strength and vulnerability that shines through in every page. If you like action-packed, aliens, paranormal, and a whole helping of romance, this is definitely the book and series for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am about as far from a young adult as it’s possible to get.

Bolick knows how to balance her novel with action scenes and tension filled scenes, along with some romance that I normally wouldn’t want in a novel like this, but it works really well. The characters are well-rounded, deep individuals with back stories and personalities. It’s hard not to fall in love with these characters and I was rooting for them all the way through. I wish I could know these characters in real life. They are inspiring. Fear Justice is one of those books that you can lose track of reality with. Time stood still as I read this. I enjoyed this read, a sci-fi action story with a fast storyline. Occasionally I wondered if it was a bit too quick, but it didn’t hinder the story in any way. There’s a lot of room for this story to grow in the future books. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

This is what might be called a young/adult thriller type of genre. I am not a young adult. Sometimes I’m not even an old adult (just a grown-up kid) but I really enjoyed this book. And yet, this particular story is not that story. Rena, or Regina, seems to be a strong young girl who is fearless and the writing to paint a picture of her is the kind of writing that gives you the feeling you can handle anything too. Almost a personal sort of uplifting feeling in the midst of chaos and fright. The characters, especially Rena and her friend Tony are crafted well with intense personalities and are two people who have had their share of problems. The story keeps you right on the edge, wondering what will happen. It was a good read, a quick read and also well worth the time. As I said before, I enjoyed it as an adult, but it is also clean enough it to be read by young adults. Rather refreshing actually.

In some ways this book reminded me of the Heroes series. A mysterious woman who had special powers and then disappeared. Her connection to people in Rena’s hometown and herself. Will Rena allow herself to be manhandled? Really good book, it had intrigue, government corruption, superheroes and plain old human feelings that cloud our judgments. The writing and editing were good. The pacing was better.

I received this from Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review, this was a fast paced thriller for young adults. About a girl living in a campground with her drunk of a father and younger brother who she has to take care of. Enter the smouldering new student who makes a point to get her interest, then the action begins. This kind of read like a comic book with the main character coming into her own so quickly, but all in all a good read .

I received a free copy of this book via Voracious Readers Only. I thoroughly enjoyed it.........and read it all in one go! I was a tad nervous to begin with because some young adult heroes/heroines can be annoyingly vacuous which tends to make me not care about what happens to them! I very much cared about Rena, and will purchase the other books in the series.

Good book I received this book for free and I am doing an honest review. Took me a few chapters to get into this book, but once I did it was actually pretty good. I’m normally not into too much sci-fi, so that part lost me a little, but I really enjoyed the storyline. Will be reading the next book to see what else happen.
