    Despite its brevity, this book was delightfully rigorous. The author took a very wholistic approach to East African music, spending equal amounts of time on description and analysis of the music and instruments and on the social and cultural context of East African musical practices. I especially liked the examination of the intersection of traditional music and modernity in the development of newer musical styles and forms.

    Another in the Global Music series. This concentrates on music traditions in three countries, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. Of all the books, this was the music I was least familiar with, so it was interesting to learn about. There are many different types of music, and the CD selections were fairly extensive.
