First, I have to say that this is a gorgeous book. It is fun to look through. The food photos look delectable, and the many images of girls cooking and decorating give a touch of authenticity to the work. Why only two stars? Well, nearly all the recipes are heavily involved and fussy. I think it would be hard for the targeted audience, probably 10 to 12 year olds, to get great results. They also assume that everyone has a stand mixer and other specific equipment, plus access to ingredients, such as creme fraiche and crystalized ginger. Since this is first and foremost a cookbook for kids, I think it just isn't very realistic. Probably it's best used for inspiration. There are a few decorating tips, which I might try out.

What I love about the American Girl cookbook series is that they treat young cooks as capable and daring. Most children's cook book are too simplistic. The recipe are basic and the bar is low. If you want to learn how to be a good cook you need to be willing to try new things and take risks. Also the recipes are scrummy.
