I really enjoyed this story. I really liked that you get into the mind of both cousins. As I was reading I kept wondering who was behind everything and what was going to happen next. I was really dragged into this story and I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book. These two cousins are pretty awesome and I can't wait to find out what their future has in store for them. I really enjoyed this story. I really liked that you get into the mind of both cousins. The biggest disappointment was the lack of action. Plenty of action happened in this book, we just didn't get to see it. The book starts off (spoiler alert) with a friend of Gabby's dying at the hands of a shadow man, but we don't get to see it. All the action that takes place in the plot is hidden from the reader apart from one short scene towards the end. All the action that takes place in the plot is hidden from the reader apart from one short scene towards the end. There's loads of character development and dissecting of emotions and relationships in this book and that was really great and well done, but it was difficult to get immersed. We are told about what is happening but the scene isn't set, it's listed. As a result, whatever drama that we do see has little to no impact. Last big issue was the inappropriate reactions the characters had to the situations in the book. When Gabby's dearest friends go missing, food is all it takes to cheer her up. Whenever a dire situation occurs, I expected the main characters to meet the drama and have an adventure, but the truth is, whenever something exciting or dire happens, they just sit at home and wait for the bad weather to pass. The characters were great, distinct and developed well, but they couldn't save the story. I was desperate to give this one a five star because it looked so amazing, but it fell short. PROS: Great characters, fantastic cover, interesting premise. CONS: No drama, lacklustre plot, telling over showing.

Summer of magic This first book about the de Valais witches introduces us to a hidden world of witches. They live and work among us but practice their craft in communities in secret. We start to get a peak at a world of power hidden from mortals and the dangers of being different in that world. I liked the viewpoint of the cousins and their feelings about their world and how they wanted their lives to go. How they were trying to find their own different ways in a world where their main guiding force was their grandmother. The story moved well and was engaging. My only dislike is that the chapters would focus through the eyes of one of the cousons, which is fine, but occasionally I got lost timeline wise and it took a few moments to figure out where the characters were coming from. All in all a good book and recommend it to everyone

I can’t wait for the next book! I devoured this in one day. YA isn’t normally my preferred genre, but I do enjoy fantasy and wanted to give this a try. I’m so glad I did! The characters developed nicely and there’s plenty of room for growth as they move on to the next phase of their lives. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
