Rating: 2.5 / 5 Moving on to the fourth book in "The Curse of Raven's Cliff" mini-series (a six book, multi-author continuity from Harlequin Intrigue)...I must say this series frustrates me more and more as I read each book. The discrepancies from book-to-book are horrible. (and just for the sake of saying it even though I have in past reviews...these books need to be read as a whole and in order. They don't work as stand-alones.) The discrepancies from book-to-book are horrible. (and just for the sake of saying it even though I have in past reviews...these books need to be read as a whole and in order. They don't work as stand-alones.) This fourth book focuses on the case of the Seaside Strangler (I'm still annoyed he suddenly became a strangler when that wasn't the case at first...). Detective Andrei Lagios wants the killer of his little sister found, before he harms another innocent woman. In order to work the case, he teams up with Jocelyne Baker, the newly-returned-home daughter of the local inn keeper and town kook (i.e. Wiccan witch). Jocelyne can get him entrance into the inn, where the police suspect the killer lives or frequents. So he poses as Jocelyne's boyfriend and gathers clues. But he can't fight his attraction to the beautiful, alone pregnant woman. The killer soon has Jocelyne in his sights though and Andrei must figure out the truth before it's too late. Of the four books I've read so far, this one is probably my least favorite. It just didn't do anything for me. Andrei needed to be a bit more tortured over the death of his sister and the romance was kinda rushed, not developed enough to feel right. Then there's the whole thing with the title and the back summary that makes it sound like Jocelyne was suspicious and sketchy...when that's completely not the case. She was never under suspicion. And for whatever reason, the mystery of the Seaside Strangler being solved felt a bit anti-climatic to me. Not sure why. But overall, this book just lacked any zing for me. Part of that is probably due to the annoying inconsistency in details in this series. I've mentioned it before in past reviews, and this book was no different. There were three major mismatches between this book and the others. First, in the last book, at the end, it was blatantly said that the mayor resigned because of his sketchy actions...but yet in this book, he is clearly still the mayor. What gives? Second, the first book builds up the "Strangler" by saying he dresses his victims in hand-stitched, simple white gowns, but now in this book they are suddenly wearing used, off-the-rack wedding dresses. And third, in the first book, it's found the surviving victim was drugged with a new, designer drug called Stinging Flower made from anemones, but in this book, that detail is completely dropped like there was never a drug known to be used by the killer and they are suddenly just discovering that dead victims had been dosed with poison from a deadly plant called henbane. Was there any sharing of details as these books were written? All these inconsistencies completely ruin the cohesiveness of the series. It's like they are a series, but not a series. Just a bunch of books that are supposed to go together. It's called planning, people! A little more and this could have been a great series!

The heavy fog gave this book an eerie feeling while the town searched for the seaside killer. It was interesting to read how the Author weaved Witchcraft, potions, and spells throughout the story. I was reminded that just because others are not my religion does not make them bad, just different. Most of them also want peace and love like Hazel (Jocelyn’s mom) wanted. I loved Jocelyn’s feisty attitude, and how Andrei was always there trying to protect her rather she wanted it or not. The way the story twisted and turned kept me flipping the pages not wanting to put this book down. Good balance of suspense, romance and action.

This was one book I did skip some pages, but only because of certain "spells" and my not wanting to read them because of my personal conviction. With that in mind, Andrei and Jocelyne's tale of love touched me deeply. Both wanting to do whatever they could to help their town of Raven's Cliff and everything it has been going through. In the process their love weathered past misfortunate relationships, family loses and moms being labeled the "the kook" of Ravens Cliff! Ps: please note, I recommend This was one book I did skip some pages, but only because of certain "spells" and my not wanting to read them because of my personal conviction. This was my first Harlequin. I'd say it turned out to be a guilty pleasure and I'm not opposed to reading another. It's a very fast, very easy read. The dialogue is full of cliches but it made it entertaining. This was my first Harlequin. I'd say it turned out to be a guilty pleasure and I'm not opposed to reading another.
