Tiene dos elecciones, entre las cuales puede elegir: la modificación de su conducta o el destierro a Conventry, un lugar enorme y fronterizo, lleno de personas de dudosa y anti cívico comportamiento y violenta conducta. En la cárcel, Dave conocerá a Maggie, que le ayudará a sobrevivir y fugarse de la cárcel, además de hacerse partícipe de una asociación privada de rebeldes contra los tres estados...pero alguna cosa más le depara a Mackinnon y él mismo ni se lo imagina... Nos situamos en un gobierno en US con un Convenio escrito por uno de los líderes de la anterior revolución, Novak ( jefe de John Lyle en ‘ Si esto continúa’) para asegurar la máxima libertad a todos, excepto si se daña a otra persona. Entonces el ejecutor de dicha conducta es llevado a los tribunales, que no le juzgan y sentencian, sino que le dan a elegir si deciden re insertarse en la sociedad, tras un periodo de terapia social, o ir desterrado a Conventry, con personas que tienen las mismas actitudes y pensamientos. De hecho se nos presenta una sociedad en la cual está ya prohibido y erradicado matar, incluso por deporte a los animales, de ahí que esté establecida la creación económica de proteínas. Ya nadie pasa hambre y se ha controlado el clima, para que no sea extremo. En Conventry hay tres jefaturas soberanas, creadas por los desterrados: 1/ Nueva américa: aparentemente ‘democrático’ pero que es el que se apodera de los pocos bienes de Lyle y lo encarcela. 2/ Estado libre: una didactura sin tapujos (basada en las antiguas leyes del funcionalismo: ‘ Las carreteras deben rodar’, historia del futuro I) 3/ Los ángeles: con los aún escasos seguidores del antiguo Profeta encarnado ( ‘ Si esto continúa’), que viven en un monte realizando plegarias día y noche. Los tres mini gobiernos pretenden gobernar el resto del continente, para el 1º es un medio propagandístico, para el 2º una política fija (golpe de estado y guerra), mientras que el tercero espera el regreso del primer profeta encarnado( religión, dogmas y fanatismos). Con éste resumen, EL AUTOR CRITICA TODAS LAS FORMAS DE GOBIERNO ESTABLECIDAS EN LA HISTORIA. Inevitablemente, las dos primeras soberanías pactan para apoderarse de los EEUU y su nuevo e idealizado gobierno social....la cual cosa no puede suceder nuevamente, después de la terrible época de tiranía pasada. LA HISTORIA QUIERE LLEVARNOS A QUE CUESTIONEMOS SI ES NECESAREO UN MUNDO PERFECTO O NO ( QUIZÁ EN PARTE), QUE NOS DESPOJA DE LA SORPRESA DEL VIVIR, ACERCA DE LOS LIMITES DE LIBERTAD Y DEL DESPOJO DE LA INDIVIDUALIDAD DEL CARÁCTER DEL SER HUMANO FRENTE AL BIEN COMÚN. ES LA INEVITABLE LACRA DEL COMPORTAMIENTO HUMANO, MUCHAS VECES IMPERFECTO, PERO OTRAS TANTAS VECES, RICO Y GENEROSO..NO TODO NI TODOS PUEDEN CONTROLARSE Y MEJORARSE. HEINLEIN NO DEJA DE CRITICAR EL ESTABLECIMIENTO DE LAS DESDEÑABLES FORMAS DE MANIPULACIÓN Y OPRESIÓN DE LAS PRINCIPALES FORMAS DE GOBIERNO EN LA HISTORIA, QUE NO DEJAN DE REPETIRSE UNA Y OTRA VEZ. POR TODO ELLO, ES UN RELATO CRITICO DE CARGADO FONDO PSICOLÓGICO- SOCIAL DE CAUSA Y EFECTO GENERACIONAL ( la causa que lleva a Dave a golpear a un tipo y ser llevado a los tribunales, es debido a su carácter que juzga la moral de los demás y ejecutar una forma de castigo adecuada; estigma una infancia con un padre autoritario e implacable), ACERCA DE LA INEVITABLE Y MAL LLEVADA AUTORIDAD DE LOS GOBIERNOS Y HOGARES, POR EXCESO O CARENCIA Avances y/ o predicciones Tecnológicas: - Vuelta al viaje interplanetario - Control del clima Avances y / o predicciones sociales: - establecimiento del ‘Convenio’ ( documento social – científico) ,posterior a la revolución y derroque del gobierno del profeta, que asegura la máxima libertad del individuo, siempre y cuando no se haga daño a otra persona. - Perfeccionamiento de la ciencia de las relaciones sociales, basada en las afirmaciones negativas básicas de la Semántica - Fabricación de proteínas económicas (alimentos sintéticos) y ruina del negocio de criar carne para su matanza.

   Honestly, this short story is truly one of my favorites of all time, ever. I need to re-read it again (but I've read it threes times since the first time in seventh grade). It is the perfect counterpoint to Ayn Rand's works and while no more philosophically correct, I love it for the anarchy of those on the other side of the barrier, for the choice of "learning the hard way" or reprogramming. Honestly, this short story is truly one of my favorites of all time, ever. I need to re-read it again (but I've read it threes times since the first time in seventh grade). It is the perfect counterpoint to Ayn Rand's works and while no more philosophically correct, I love it for the anarchy of those on the other side of the barrier, for the choice of "learning the hard way" or reprogramming.

   A short story. David MacKinnon, a romantic idealist, is convicted of assault in a society where a person’s action enjuries another individual is a crime. The government fears the individualist MacKinnon will repeat his action, he is given a choice: to be mentally fixed by psychologists, or go toan area known as Coventry, a rugged outland area beyond the Barrier, where people who refuse to abide by social norms are exiled. He chooses exile and discovers it isn’t the “paradise” he was expecting.

   A nice short story to be read with/after 'If This Goes On-' showing that even after the theocratic society was toppled, several sprung up in its place that were far from utopias - a pretty realistic, sad view of what our struggle to find a good kind of order is like.    The story starts with a man on trial. This section of the story had a very hollywood feel. Especially when the main character made an epic speech. But the judge out did him and agreed to send him away instead of having his head re-programed. I agree I would want my head re-programed but i'm happy to have it done to criminals. I enjoyed this story and found it interesting. They have a humane way of treat criminals. But it's not perfect.    I am giving this 5 stars, because the book was written in 1940. It is a beautiful ring-composition of a story involving a fractured United States. But, as I have been reading these stories #1 through #21, I finally started getting burned out on this 1,000-page Space Opera. These three stories "If this goes on", "Coventry", and "Misfit" can all be found in the book "Revolt in 2100". I am giving this 5 stars, because the book was written in 1940. It is a beautiful ring-composition of a story involving a fractured United States. But, as I have been reading these stories #1 through #21, I finally started getting burned out on this 1,000-page Space Opera. These three stories "If this goes on", "Coventry", and "Misfit" can all be found in the book "Revolt in 2100".

   Honestly I don't remember this book as much though I remember enjoying it. Heinlein paints an amazing world with a few short words.
