After reading the blurb, I was so excited to start reading this book. I'm a sucker for first love, second chance love stories. After reading so many thrillers recently, I needed something light to read. Something that would make me fall in love with the characters. Something to make my heart swoon. This book definitely was not it. The story was slow and boring. I was ready to put the book down at the halfway point but I soldiered on. The "secret" on why Evan left was dull and uninteresting. I disliked Cam. She was so naive and clueless. (view spoiler)[ Your estranged husband is a local celebrity yet she has to lower herself to live with her daughter in a 1 bedroom apartment above an auto shop and work at a strip joint? And she doesn't think that would be a problem for a teenage girl? (hide spoiler)] It sounds like there will be sequels to this series but I'm done. This story was actually a pretty mellow second chance romance. In a good way. Evan and Cam easily slipped back into their relationship and the only angsty drama-aside from the expected kind from Cam’s ex- was her daughter Morgan’s teenage rebellion.

Wow. I was expecting a ‘lighter’ read however Ms. Aitken delivered a thoughtful, deep, and loving story. I’d say When We Left has it all – a cranky teenager (aren’t they all sometimes?), two people who were ‘the’ couple oh so long ago, and a group of friends whose friendship endures years and miles of separation. Cam Riley comes back home to Timber Creek and runs smack dab into her old flame – and love of her young life – Evan Anderson. Their breakup, which is a simplified term for what happened Wow. Their breakup, which is a simplified term for what happened, truly affected them both in all the years they’ve been apart. When We Left is truly about their story, old and new, and if they can come back together again. Cam has a teenage daughter who just makes me smile. I mean, you know there will be much angst, because of her age and the situation Cam and Morgan (her daughter) find themselves in, but the journey they take to build a closer mother/daughter relationship is truthful and touching. And the friends…OMG, talk about shades of high school! I have a funny feeling there is more to come from these friends and I’m looking forward to reading more about how their lives change. Great new series with lots of heart. Truly felt for both Cam and Evan…and even Morgan. The lives and relationships make for great reading.

A sweet story. It is very much like the Harlequin Romance novels. There are parts I found heart warming but there is the drama to balance the story. This is an easy read and is perfect for a vacation read.

Ms Aitken begins this new series with a wonderful story about second chances in love and in life. Cam Riley and Evan Anderson were HS sweethearts until the day he left town without looking back. Or so did Cam think. Fast forward sixteen years. She is driving back to Timber Creek with Morgan, her 15 year old daughter, after her husband’s very public betrayal. As she approaches town she’s stopped by Officer Anderson . Imagine the surprise they both experienced in meeting again after all this time. Throughout the story we get a chance to see how misunderstandings tore them apart, but at the same time, gave each of them a chance to grow up to be whom they are today. Especially Evan, who went from being a troublemaker to an enlisted man and later a respectable member of society and a lawman. The story is heartbreaking but also heartwarming. The possibilities of second chances is within reach . Evan is sweet and willing to give them a chance , while Cam , understandably so, is cautious. She has been hurt before and has the emotional scars to prove it. A great beginning to this series. Can’t wait to see what else the author has in store for Cam’s and Evan’s friends. I voluntarily read this advance copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

THis is a fantastically written story. The characters and storyline are amazing and you can feel what the characters feel...and there’s enough of a lead in to the other characters to see that they will be in other books as we’ll without you getting lost on their stories in the future. Loved this second chance story! High school sweethearts get a second chance at love but this time with a wealth of experience, heartache and wisdom. Completely enjoyed this story and greatly looking forward to the rest in the series. ❤️

When you truly love someone, you are willing to do anything to make them happy. Even walking away from the best relationship in the world because you feel you’re just not the best man for the job. You know she has always wanted to see what the world had to offer beyond their small town. So, Evan Anderson accommodated and just walked away without a word. Cam Riley had arrived the next morning after graduation ready start her new life with the man she loved as long as she could remember. But Evan’s mom was the only one there to greet her and it was a chilly one at that. She told her Evan had left and he was never coming back but especially for her. She was devastated. What about their plans to be married and start a family? Puff he was gone up in smoke. She too figured why should she stay? She packed up and landed in Portland. Sleeps with Ryan and ends up pregnant. They decided to marry out of obligation rather than love. Making it work until it didn’t. Now almost sixteen years later some good and some not. After years of turning her back on her cheating husband’s affairs he comes out on his weather spot on the news telling the world he is having an affair with his co-anchor and she’s pregnant. He arrives home to say he wants a divorce. Leaving just enough money in the bank to make it through the month but not in their mansion but back in her hometown. Over Junky’s Auto Shop that has a one-bedroom apartment. So, they pack up and move home to find out the guy who left her back on graduation night, Evan, is now the Sheriff there. Nature has a twisted sense of humor. Now Cam is having to deal with serving drinks in a sleaze dive strippers bar to make ends meet since there are no jobs in town but that one. The thing that bothers her other than her daughter’s attitude is her ex’s lack of involvement with his Morgan. Choosing the bimbo and unborn child over her. Cam has returned home to an uncertain future for her and her beautiful teenage daughter who feels displaced and no longer loved by her father. Knowing her mom is the one who has always been there for her has chosen to take all her anger out on her. Because she knows her mom will never leave her. Causing pain to circle around them like an unwelcome blanket on a hot summer day. Upon her return, she must find a job, get Morgan in school, and avoid Evan at all cost. The last one she just know that now that she knows he knows she’s in town that will be a little hard. This is a book filled with misunderstandings, lies, trust issues, hurt feelings, teen angst, betrayal, lost love, love on the rocks, and old friendships renewed. The family broken publicly and then the denial of a child can only bring more pain. I had more respect for Cam working at the dive bar. Then I did at the beginning of the book when she was just hanging on being a trophy wife turning a blind eye to Ryan’s affairs. This way she wasn’t sitting back taking what she overlooked for years from her ex. This an intense read that does have some slow moments but still well worth the read. I give this: 4 stars. A lovely story. Cam is reeling from going through divorce proceedings, after her marriage imploded on the television, for the world to see, her husband was a well-known anchorman on the local news channel. Her daughter Morgan was with her, but she could not cope with her father's apparent rejection of her, she had become morose and sullen, blaming her mother for everything. They had little money, her husband had almost cleared their bank account and Cam had little money of her own, as soon as they were settled in the small, scruffy apartment her friend Christy had found for them her first priority was to find a job. The first person they see in town is Evan, now a police officer, when she lived in Timber Creek he had been her boyfriend, and they have unresolved issues; Evan had left town right after their high school graduation ball, without leaving any message or reason for going. This story feels very real, the emotions are well-written, especially Morgan's, this is a living, breathing fifteen year-old we can all recognise! This will be a good series, Elena has lightly touched on the issues in the lives of Cam's three friends, Christy, Amber and Drew, all very different problems in their lives. Very well worth reading.

Local law enforcement officer Evan Anderson is shocked to find out he has pulled over his first love Cam Riley, but now figures he can do everything possible to prove that he has changed and that their love is worth a second chance. I absolutely love When We Left and I immediately fell in love with all of the characters especially Cam and Evan. Cam and Evan were high school sweethearts until Evan left town without telling Can. Cam and her daughter are returning to her hometown after divorce and of course the first person she sees is Evan. Evan and Can were great together and their chemistry together was wonderful. Evan was so supportive of Cam and her daughter. What a great start to a new series.
